She made me cried because I’m an immigrant Muslim from Africa serving in the US military and I have experience what she is talking about I pray to Allah forgive me for those times and I have seen other Muslims going through the same to fit in and I can’t imagine what our Muslim youths are going through daily.

Mashallah, of course its our duty to change this kind of thoughts by our behaviour. Islam show us the pragmatical way to share this religion, if you are respectful, humble , good behaviour..... you can change the way they thoughts about us Islam is peace , Islam is comfort , Islam is respect

I think the sandwich kids are in their 40s now and there are lots of children born in the west (and EAST) since then. Their parents may have lived at least 20-30yrs in the West, so I do not necessarily think the last (third) point applies to the millennials. I feel at least some of the issue actually lies within those born in the east, they are still impressed by the 'charm' of the west and want to dress and emulate them. Look at Arabs, Pakistanis, turks, all born in their own countries. These lot have abandoned hijabs, not us born in the west. These lot are taking their own religion for granted. These lot think, well this and that actress from back home (Bollywood muslims are a good example) are muslims, and they don't dress like this. People adore them. there is no sin to be like them, no one should judge them. Hence without knowing, they have made these non practising muslims their ideals. That is why it is easy for them to dress like westerners, and to get operations for lip fillers etc. They no longer think of Allah and Prophet saws. They may pray at home, but outside they want to look like westerners. they want to mingle with people unlike themselves, want to be accepted. True acceptance is only with Allah.

This is a cogent and perceptive examination of a daunting dilemma for our Western ummah, and so well presented it brought tears to my eyes. Well done, ya ukhti!

The sister is a good speaker with a good message, but it’s important to consider how the story she tells of the Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab relates to power. Specifically, one of her comments while ending her talk is “it’s not about having power”. And yet the story from which she draws this point is about the Siege of Jerusalem, which was precisely about Muslim power through the conquest of Jerusalem from the Byzantines. She also mentions Umar’s servant -- which means Umar was his master -- which points to the power one person holds over another in that relationship. To be sure, the sister has a good message - that Islam is an honor that the youth should be proud of. But some of the facts of the story she tells of Umar ibn al-Khattab seem to suggest that the pursuit of power was still very important for the early expansion of Islam. Allah knows best.
