Hey all! Currently I'm not eligible to make money from RU-vid (I'm still pretty far off), but if you want to support me, as well as liking, subscribing, etc. you can check out one of my books on Amazon. -- amzn.to/2SpoPu9 -- There you can find my werewolf novel, STRAY, which I assure you will be quite different to what you expect when you hear "werewolf novel", and my first volume of short horror stories, Insomnis: Vol I. Both are available for free on Kindle Unlimited, and for small amounts of money in both physical and digital forms. More videos and writings coming soon(ish).

To this day possibly the most hilarious tv show I've ever seen.

This series was genius, pure genius. It nails everything cheesy about the source material - it's basically like a deliberately bad spoof of Diagnosis Murder and The Twilight Zone. Highly recommended.

HANDS DOWN the funniest piece of television I have ever seen. Nothing short of a comedy masterpiece. The sheer effort that went into making it intentionally bad is staggering. The writing, acting, cinematography, editing, sound design... just perfection.

I think what made Garth Marenghi's Darkplace really work was the timing. It came out around the same time as other absurdist UK comedies like The Mighty Boosh, but before anyone in those shows had become recognisable faces. This lack of recognising the actors made it credible that this was, actually, a legitimate thing that had never aired on UK TV (it had a brief run in Peru). Watching it now you recognise Richard Ayode and Matt Berry, as well as the cameos from the likes of Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding.
@TheLuxNoctis
@TheLuxNoctis 7 лет назад
Oh yeah it definitely helped that at the time no one really knew any of the actors, the timing benefitted it in that way for sure. I'm a big fan of The Mighty Boosh too, was planning on making at video about it as well at some point, it really was quite successful though in comparison to Darkplace. It sucks that Darkplace's rating were so poor (I think undeservedly so) because I'd love to have gotten more of it, hence creating this video that almost no one watched either. :P I feel like if it were a new thing now, what with how quickly word can spread on the internet it might be way more popular. Still, it's a unique little hidden gem for those that stumble across it. The Mighty Boosh made it clear that there's a decently sized audience for this kind of absurdist humor, so i don't really understand why this show never caught on.

I saw this when it was first aired, late night on Channel 4, tucked away in the corner like a little secret no-one else knew about. But some of the genius was hidden further until years later. I was on a train, watching the DVD on my laptop with headphones. It suddenly hit me; when a character walks in from screen right, the footsteps sound comes on the left speaker. That is just jaw dropping attention to parody detail.
@TheLuxNoctis
@TheLuxNoctis 3 года назад
That's the sort of thing that made me want to get the word out, the level of craft behind the show is so easy to overlook because it's intentionally trying to appear ridiculous and amateurish. I also just adore the writing, contrasting the interviews where the "actors" act like they were working on an artistic masterpiece, with the ludicrous end product. It's just perfect. Oh, and thank you so much for watching of course!

You just have to admire how there is so much wrong with every scene, even on a rewatch of something like going in to talk to the kid in the bed about his sick father.... why in the world is the kid in the hospital? I mean... he should be in the hospital to get news of his dad, but why is he in a ward... in pjs admitted like he is a patient. Layer upon layer of bad to the point where you can't get 10 seconds without an additional error which all had to be planned far more than accidentally doing it correctly, it's genius in ways.

If this had been made and released now (in 2017) it would perhaps be a lot more successful, given the massive nostalgia culture and 80's aesthetic revival we are currently experiencing. More people would probably get the joke now and watch it, however the show itself wouldn't feel anywhere near as original I guess. Good video! I hope even more people will see this show now! Also worth checking out are "Look Around You"(from 2002) which is also an absurdist faux 70's TV program and "A Gun For George" (from 2011) which has the humorous yet atmospheric melancholic vibes of Darkplace.
@TheLuxNoctis
@TheLuxNoctis 6 лет назад
I agree completely which is why I feel it's such a shame the show didn't take off like it should have! I'm doing my part to spread the word though (and I got a copyright strike for my trouble today :P) I need to put those shows on my list of things to watch when work stops totally consuming my life. Thank you for the suggestions and thank you for watching, I really appreciate it. ^ . ^
@TransmissionEpicts
@TransmissionEpicts 6 лет назад
Oh, cheers for the reply! Yes, do check out those other shows if you can and see what you think. The Gun for George is made by Matthew Hollness (aka Garth Marenghi himself!) and its strange seeing him in something similar yet in a totally different setting! It is a real shame it didn't take off yes, as it had a lot more potential if they'd expanded the idea and world of Darkness in a second season. I would love to have found out whether Madeline Wool was alive too, or whether she'd come back as a poltergeist to terrify the remaining Darkplace cast! No problemo, subscribed!

"As a little gremlin" was an excellent image to convey. 😂 But yeah I fully love this show, I rewatched a couple episodes yet again the other day and I'm still noticing new, ridiculous details. I'm so glad that it's gotten more beloved over time rather than being forgotten. And I was the same way as a kid, if it wasn't bright, colourful and loud then I was checked out, so I feel you there. Tbh as my upload rate will attest, attention span is still a massive weakness of mine. Thanks for giving this a watch and dropping a comment, I'm always happy to find people who like some goofy surrealism as much as I do.

No mention of Matt Berry?? Greatest voice ever
@TheLuxNoctis
@TheLuxNoctis 3 года назад
That's my one regret about this video, not giving more attention to the cast, and Matt Berry in particular. At the time I believe my thinking was that he was still successful and relatively recognisable, so wasn't as forgotten as Holness seems to be, but also wasn't as prevalent on TV as Ayoade (who I felt I sort of had to mention for that reason). Generally, on the rare occasion I make a video, I try to make sure the script is pretty lean because people will click away if a video feels too slow, but I definitely dropped the ball by not taking a bit more time to talk about the actors.

I live this show, I recommend it to anyone I think would enjoy it. It is a show that you will either absolutely love or absolutely hate. Seeing this makes me want to watch the series again. So I’m just gonna go begin again with episode one. Dispensing medicinal treatment with a shovel, a shotgun, and a flamethrower is rebellious as f*ck and if that’s not innovation, I don’t know what is.

its amazingly funny. Ayoade plays the same character he did in Darkplace. Episode one has Garth Marenghi as a guest and he shows off scenes from his upcoming darkplace movie "war of the wasps" Holness plays a different character each episode, doing what darkplace did for 80s tv to areas such as folk music, 70s exploitation horror, etc. Its clearly a lower budget show, but its a fantastic companion piece to darkplace
