The full unedited live stream of the IGF Conversation: Realising a Global Community. The event was held at the Honourable Artillery Company on May 07, 2024 in London, England and marked 10 years since the inaugural Invictus Games in London 2014.
Panel 1: A look at 10 years of the Invictus movement:
This panel featured the founding Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, Prince Harry and former Chair of the IGF, Sir Keith Mills GBE DL and Ken Fisher. Prince Harry touched on the inception of the Invictus Games and his vision for the Invictus movement and Sir Keith will share his thought on key milestones and moments over the last ten years. Ken Fisher, Chairman of the Fisher House Foundation and Chairman of the Invictus Games Orlando 2016, joined the panel to discuss the importance of the Friends & Family programme to the Invictus Games.
Panel 2: Medical research into provision of support for the Invictus Community:
Our second panel drew on the experiences and injuries sustained by the cohort involved in our Beyond the Finish line study, launched the same day, and other ongoing research. The panel discussed what can be learned and shared from these findings across all 23 members of the Invictus Community of Nations.
This panel explored how research can have a positive and pragmatic impact on the rehabilitation of the international WIS community. As we continue to look at injuries sustained from the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns and how we can help future WIS communities from what we are seeing in countries like Ukraine. We heard from Dr Emily Mayhew and Dr Paul Pasquina who work directly with the wounded veteran community as they have been clinically studying ways to improve lives for many years. Jens Lunde, Team Manager for the Invictus Games Team Denmark and Kasper Holm, a former competitor for Team Denmark gave us a first-hand perspective on the recovery experience for the competitors of the Invictus Games. The panel concluded with the launch of Dr Celina Shirazipour’s research entitled ‘Beyond the Finish Line: Examining the Invictus Games’, a longitudinal study on participation in the Invictus Games to show significant short and long-term positive impacts on the recovery journey of international wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veteran community.
Panel 3: What does the next ten years look like for the Invictus movement? 15:15 - 15:45
Our final panel focused on looking to the future and how sport is the catalyst for recovery within many of our Invictus nations. We got a different perspective from the newer corners of the Invictus Community of Nations with Dean of Nigeria and Victor of Colombia and learnt how the Invictus Games Foundation has significantly changed their lives.
We also had insights from the Rt Hon Johnny Mercer MP, UK Minister of Veterans’ Affairs and Heidi Grant, Vice President, Defence Global Growth & Engagement, Boeing Defence, Space & Security and learnt of their commitment to helping the international WIS community. Annika Kanzenbach gave us the perspective of a spouse and how a recovery journey for an injured service member is never solo, it affects the whole family.
The IGF Conversation finished with closing remarks from Dominic Reid OBE, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation and Richard Smith CBE, Chief Operating Officer of the Invictus Games Foundation.
