The Punt Gun was used for commercial duck hunting. It'd be loaded up on a small boat (called a "punt"), load it up with like a pound of birdshot pellets and they'd sneak up on a flock of waterfowl. Then a normal gun would be used to scare the birds into flying up and this cannon would kill and entire flock in one shot, then they'd collect all the birds. It was so effective that it had to be banned from duck hunting bc there was a real possibility it'd make the wild ducks go extinct in places 😬

Punt guns were popular in the 20's and 30's and used commercially for waterfowl hunting. They were attacked to a long boat similar to a canoe, the gunner would paddle out toward a flock of geese or similar and at around 25-30 shoot said flock of birds. These birds were sold on the commercial market. Thankfully punt guns were outlawed for use on waterfowl, as they were decimating waterfowl populations. They are found now only in Museums, and some are in private hands for experimentation and target shooting to see just how much damage they would do. I've got a 1.75-inch punt gun that I inherited from my grand dad, He never used it on waterfowl as they had already been outlawed for that purpose. Just something he picked up at some point. If it a beautifully made gun reminiscent of a old English shotgun and it is clearly a blast to shoot.

You are the first reaction to notice the same thing I did when he did the buckshot... you can see a 5 foot circle shadow appear where it hits. Yes, this is a small cannon, a 1 pounder to be exact. With 700-800 pounds of recoil from a 150 pound gun, the "equal but opposite" rule tells me the ball is being kicked out by thousands of pounds of force.

Everyone's already pointing out that the punt gun was used to hunt ducks, so I'm gonna point out a fun fact about that wax slug. Wax slugs are actually a Great Depression invention and were actually used in hunting. People couldn't afford to buy real lead slugs to use for deer hunting, so they'd take birdshot and lead fragments and glue them together into a slug with wax. It was less effective than the real thing, but as you could see it would get the job done.

Pretty sure that armored car is handgun proof and nothing more. Still impressive.
