This is the remarkable story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells Scientists call 'Immortal Cells'. In this episode of PKBinspire, I share the little-known story of how the cells of a black woman literally spearheaded many of the scientific breakthroughs we know today. These cells are referred to as HeLa Cells.
HeLa cells have led to many of the much-celebrated monumental Scientific breakthroughs of the modern era.
-HeLa cells were the first human cells to be successfully cloned.
-The Polio vaccine would not have existed without HeLa cells
Measles, HIV, Ebola
-HeLa cells were sent to outer space to study the effects of space travel on the human body before any human was physically jettisoned in a shuttle.
-Thanks to HeLa cells we know that HPV causes cervical cancer and now a vaccine is available.
I researched and made this video with one purpose: to tell a story that is usually glossed over. A Story of how the immortal cells of Henrietta Lacks saved the entire human race.

It would definitely seem so.

She was absolutely beautiful. Do you think maybe the doctor took her life after knowing about her cells?

According to the historical records, she died before the researchers had made the groundbreaking discovery. The hospital was one of the few that allowed Blacks to be treated so it was routine for doctors at the time to take samples from patients.

@@PKBINspire So why did the doctors keep the discovery a secret from the family? And how did the family come to know about it?

@@bahaar2825 The discovery itself wasn't kept a secret. What was kept a secret was not informing Henrietta Lacks family that it was her cells that gave rise to the numerous scientific breakthroughs. The reasons were as follows; 1. It was unethical for them to have taken the DNA and Samples without the consent of the patient or family. Let alone for them to have used and mass-produced the cells for profits and research. Because of this, they kept the real name of the source of HeLa cells under wraps. 2. Those days, blacks were segregated and weren't considered or credited for anything good. In fact, they initially used a made-up white woman's name (crediting the fictitious woma instead of Henrietta) until after 2 decades when the truth came out. Racism is the order of the day in America in the 1950s. I hope this helps.

If you find a way to make cells stop replicating then wouldn’t that be a cure for tumours?

There's so much potential here. I think Scientists have a lot more to discover about HeLa cells and how they can dominate cancerous tumors.
