In this #TackleTipTuesday brought to you by Mercury Marine, four-time Classic Champion ‪@rickclunn543‬ talks about his experience with the color red with fishing lures over the years and why they excel in cooler water scenarios. He explains why a flat-side crankbait often stays deeper than a round, more bulbous crankbait like traditional shallow-diving crankbaits. #bassmaster #fishing

Great ambassador. What makes bass fishing great, is it's constantly changing. The solution to the puzzle is fleeting.

Ive always loved red especially on rubber worms. I too like the sweeping technique i use it mainly with lipless crankbaits but also with square bills. Makes sense what you said about thinner bodied crankbaits. They dont float to the surface as fast as rounded cranks do. They say blue is a good color too especially in deeper water.? Its supposed to hold its color better down deep. You are bass wizard mr. Clunn! Fish on!

@@josephdangelo2410 yeah hes the longest on the bass circuit still fishing. From what i understand he was a computer expert in the early 80's right before he started fishing tournaments. Hes also a 2 or 3 time bassmaster classic winner. Wealth of knowledge and skill nearly unmatched except for maybe kvd or bill dance. Cool story sir! Fish on!

I agree the man is a legend in the sport and I followed him from way back when but something I have never agreed with (relating to depth) is the color red. As a Diver and a fisherman I took a red shad worm underwater with me and I was shocked at how it went from red to just dark. The water visibility was probably 8-10 foot when I checked this again last summer. The red was pretty much gone in about 7-8 ft of water. Right under the surface it had very little color loss but as I would get down to about 5 ft it def started changing. So maybe red fades to the color that the fish could careless about but we fisherman like it cause it works for whatever reason? I guess all I’m saying is I like red spinnerbait skirts and Chatterbaits in the spring cause I can fish them shallow and they work as good as anything. But I know many people use red hooks, red line because of the theory that it disappears (I don’t agree) it just changes color and the theory that red looks like blood…..but that is relative to depth and clarity. Red in the fall is also a great option for the same reasons including the crawfish change. So I’m just not on board with every aspect of red being the trigger color. I think it’s just not an off-putting color and the right presentation with the right bait by a man or woman fishing that bait with confidence is the key. Clunn is the man…..I’m not disputing that. 👍👍 we fishermen are a finicky superstitious bunch😎

Who says bass see colors as we do.
@dondasher58
@dondasher58 2 года назад
@@rickvann3489 your correct they don’t. But the facts of light penetration and water clarity can nullify some of the color selection….making lure presentation the more important variable. It’s just a fact per science that red disappears more quickly in water even to a bass. Also if you add in dirty water or low light it disappears quickly compared to a bright day and crystal clear water. I still use red in shallow water so I’m not crapping on that. I’m just saying that there are other variables that I consider based on science. I’ll bet you most professional bass fisherman and even avid bass fisherman have learned about colors and depth and even the difference between our eyes and a bass eyes. We don’t have the same amount of cones or rods (it really doesn’t matter what it’s called. It’s just diff) so there will be a difference.

@Don Dasher I agree that's why the color selector was a good tool in the day lower it down, and it told you what you needed to know for color usage. Take a laser pointer next time you're in bass pro / Cabelas, and watch bass turn into cat's.

@@rickvann3489 yep I had one of those when I lived in central Florida. Once we used it (Kissimmee chain and butler chain) we pretty much had it figured out. Our soft plastics were red shad, tequila Shad and watermelon seed, green pumpkin. Black for night fishing. Each chain of lakes had colors that mattered and it was based on water clarity. No doubt at times it really didn’t matter because the fish will do what they want. We use to get minnows at a local tackle shop when going after crappie and one day the guy had a red jig head and a yellow one. He lowered them into the bait tank and it was amazing at how many minnows pecked at that red head. The water was crystal clear and about 2 ft deep. I like the laser pointer idea. 👍🏼 I will try that at our local cabelas.

Red is most productive in colder water due to the way bass see. They see in the red/green spectrum, and in colder water temperatures 55° and below their vision is maximized. They simply see the bait better. Yes this information came straight from a biologist.

Yea no one truly knows what other species see it's all speculation. No way to actually determine what they see unless you see it from their eyes
