The Importance Of Air Checking

In this video, i am in the middle of rebuilding a 6L50. Before assembly i air check the clutch packs to make sure there are no leaks. The 1-2-3-4 clutch pack would not air check because of some problem with the stator rings so i ended up reusing the OE rings to get a good air check. If i would not have done this the transmission would not have worked and would have to pull back out again.

I have also had this problem, with precision kits. I stack the drum, 456 and the hub all together and air check. The 1234,35R, 456 and compensator feed. I have gotten to the point that I just use OE bells housings and stators as much as possible. That has solved a lot of problem for me.

You have skylights in the shop? I ask because the exposure is a bit "washed out" in the wide-angle shot. Your colors/detail would improve with less light. Thanks for making these videos. I've been a gearhead all my life and have repaired/overhauled many systems-BUT never an slushbox. I now "get" how they operate thanks to your videos.

Thanks for the info Gary. Will the documentation tell me which ports are for which clutch pack to test ? If we don’t have your knowledge of which to do ?

Did you happen to mic the thickness/ width of the old rings verses the new rings? I know on some ring packs , it has written on them that they’re vespel rings , and do not air check very well. Are those rings like an older 4t65e ring? Where you have to make sure the end gaps aren’t located on the same side?

6l50 don't have the o rings underneath the seals? Every time I air check these they all hold air until I remove air tool from them

Do you rerun original rings or always change them? This is actually first time i ran across this with a TransTec kit
