Thanks for this guys. Is this kind of mix suitable for transplanting seedlings and more mature trees that have been dug up and will be turned into bonsai? Also since there’s no organic matter I’m assuming we will need to use chemical fertilizers every couple of watering? In essence like a hydroponic grow? What about using organic soil mix for bonsai?

Just to clarify: after every video, we receive countless emails asking us if the tree we worked on the video is for sale, or if we offer that product we used, etc, that's why we started the auctions so you can have the option of getting the tree if you would like to, and also reminding everybody the sales channel for our products. Where in FL? I'm new to Bonsai. Learning in bits and pieces, lol. So, you don't put any soil and at all? Not even on the very top? Is Akadama the one thing I always see people poking the surface with a stick? Does it work also as the soil, or is that an additive to it? Is the poking in diferent spots on the surface of the trees that always gets me thinking. I welcome any begginer tips! Thank you!

Hey Frank, thank you for your kind words. Hello! Thank you so much for this informative video. I have a couple of important questions that I would appreciate an answer to. So I will be growing bonsai's from seed and so I bought this and one other soil mix from amazon. I am planning to start them in the bonsai soil mix, however, after you said that black soil doesnt have good drainage, I am slightly confused as to what I should do. The bottom of my pot has 4 holes for drainage and is decently sized. Should I grow them in the black soil and then about 2-3 weeks after they germinate, move them into this mix? I hope you get back to me. Thank you
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Год назад
I would germinate the seeds in the bonsai soil. Black potting soil and container growing are two things that don’t go together. Growing your seeds and or seedlings in bonsai soil requires more misting of the soil to keep the seeds slightly moist. I hope this helps

lIs black soil better for some people who forget/cant water their plants everyday? Looks like you got a big nursery with lots of people helping out water your plants...my question is if you went on vacation, and your plants didn't get watered for 5-7 days, or even more, would all of your plants die? Whereas if they were in black soil, while it doesnt dry out as much, it wouldnt need the constant watering. Maybe a mix of some black soil into the bonsai soil?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 4 года назад
Hey Chapman, Great question! If you don't remember or can't water your trees every day I recommend you get a small drip system. It is super cheap and very easy to install. It took us 1 morning to install our drip system and we have over 1000 trees. If you go away for a number of days, you can set your plants into a tray with water, which is what we do when the hurricane comes because most likely power will be out. we have our trees sitting in water for up to two weeks and they are perfectly fine. You are right, in potting soil your plants don't need constant watering but they will also not grow happy and healthy. Plants like to dry out between watering and don't like to be water logged. You could absolutely mix a handful of black soil into our bonsai soil and you could shave off a few days. Keep in mind that our soil was created specifically for container grown plants and is ready to use.

Hey Jack, I like the way you think, but adding black soil can clog up the lava rock pours which will keep too much water in the pot and around the roots. Instead, place your trees in a shallow dish of water during the summer month, it will help keep the moisture longer in the soil. still water the soil daily. If you are growing trees that get yellow leaves due to the heat, I would move the trees into shade for those hot summer month.

@johnnys3995 3 года назад
Jarome, Using this particular soil would you say you would use a lot more water? This would mean you will really have to pay attention to watering pretty often otherwise the tree can possibly die due to lack of watering. Do you have a bosai soil that will retain water a little longer for less watering and keeping the tree hydrated during the hot days of summer? I mean for people that don't have the time or money to water on the daily.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 года назад
Hey Johnny, yes you do have to water more especially during the summer time. This soil will make a great difference for your trees as trees prefer to dry out a little bit before the next watering. Depending on your climate and specie as well as time of year you may get away with waiting more than one day in between watering. In Florida, we water every day except for Adenium and jades.

Hey Kallyssa, the clay itself isn't a direct replacement for akadama, but our soil mixture is a direct replacement for akadama pumice and lava. The calcined clay and the pine bark together do the work of akadama, and our soil mix is a much more affordable alternative.

Thanks a lot for the answer. I asked this because I am inquiring for my soil mix (pumice, pine bark, zeolite, earthworm humus). There are conflicting opinions on the use of pine bark; some say it is better composted because otherwise until it becomes compost it removes nitrogen from the plant instead of releasing it. That's why I had doubts and asked😊

Hi Vera, you can water your tree every day if it is outdoors in full sun. You can safe it by watering every morning around the same time, keep it in full sun, and misting the leaves. Bonsai trees should be watered every day if the soil is on the drier side of course.

I understand. But for the soil to dry out so quickly in a drier climate say California, it seems like a waste of water if the soil doesn’t t hold on to more of the water you just placed in the soil.

Why would you want your soil arid in one day? Even in a desert environment, there is water deep in the soil available to the plants. This makes no sense to me at all. Especially for non-succulents. There is nothing wrong with having enough organic matter to keep the soil moist for a few days.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 года назад
Hi Jose, good question! Trees in the ground vs. trees in pots are a completely different game. You want your bonsai soil to almost dry out in between watering to prevent the roots from getting rot and throwing the water and oxygen exchange off balance. In the ground, the roots can spread and loosen up the soil, whereas, in a pot, black soil will compact to the point of root suffocation; also, not enough air gets to the roots.
@Josef_R
@Josef_R 3 года назад
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply So for a plant that can go a WEEK before it needs watering, you would want your soil to almost dry out in a week. Yet you have it drying out in a day. Your explanation does not make sense. Because of your overly dry soil, you are now watering your plant daily instead of weekly, like it needs.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 года назад
@@Josef_R Only Jades and desert roses and other species alike need water once a week because Desert Roses store the water in the trunk and jades store the water in the leaves. All other species, deciduous, evergeen and conifers need to be watered on a daily basis when the soil is just about to dry out. The good thing about the soil is that during the rainy season where it rains on a daily basis the soil drains all the access water and just retains what it needs, therefore you can't over water your trees with this soil.
@Josef_R
@Josef_R 3 года назад
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply I'm aware of what plants can go that long without water, I'm referring to succulents because you do a lot of videos on Portulacaria. But you don't differentiate when you are telling people to buy your product and then you have them slavishly watering a succulent on a daily basis for no reason. But I live in Louisiana (2 states away) and in the summer it doesn't rain a lot and gets to 100 degrees. If I used your mix for any plants, I would be watering 5X a day. Besides the fact that any fertilizer you add goes straight out the bottom and is never absorbed by the plant.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 года назад
@@Josef_R I live in Florida which is a fairly similar climate to your and we only water once a day and succulents once a week. We don’t tell people to lavishly water their trees we always mention it might differ slightly per climate. This is why we add pine bark fines because it absorbs the fertilizer and releases it back to the plant as needed. No Ferilizer gets waisted.

Not really a nightmare. You can also use a mix of both. In your pot, pour a layer of inorganic rocky substrate first and then add earthy soil on top. I use now mostly inorganic soil due to its fast drainage. Earthy soil can choke your plants.
