That's not necessarily 100% true, and it depends on different variables like how many ppl one has fighting the battle vs how many ppl are attacking. It'd be very difficult for 10 million ppl to fight off 150 million, and it also depends on the kinds of weapons each side has like 300 million ppl with swords would lose to only 10 million with guns, so it's not just about which side has the sheer will to live and survive if they don't possess the right weapons to defend themselves and enough ammunition to fend off millions of invaders, but I do understand where you're coming from because it's usually the ppl who possess the will to fight and die until the end that are the victors, but the amount of soldiers and weapons they possess certainly makes a difference and must be taken into account before fighting such a battle. Even though Israel has 10 million citizens they have the most technologically advanced military in the middle east, and it's what makes Israel capable of defending themselves while being surrounded by enemies on all sides, but they haven't lost a single war to date and never will yet America has a massive military with the most advanced weapons on earth and yet we lost Vietnam, Afghanistan and many other battles, so there are many variables involved when it comes to war, especially if you're fighting a battle on the adversaries turf, which gives defenders a home court advantage.

The Inquisition while it could have gone better was a compromise. Most common folk preferred the religious tribunals. They were given a choice to be tried by the secular courts or the Catholic. The punishments of the local governments were far worse compared to the Catholic.
