It makes no sense in terms of evolutionary theory. Black skin is a distinct drawback at high latitudes due to melanin blocking UV and thereby inhibiting synthesis of vitamin D. Lighter skin colour would have rapidly become dominant as populations moved further north. By the time they reached Britain, this process would have been well under way.
If peppered moths could change their colours within a few generations when the industrial revolution happened and tree barks got darker, there's no reason why humans can't effect a similar change.
No it wouldn't our diet then provided enough vitamin D so as not to need it from sunlight..It was only when we were forced to develop agriculture due to over over consuming the wildlife most of which is high in vitemin D and switched to plants which aren't that we adapted to paler skin..Red hair and pale skin are coincidental not causal,as are blue eyes..
@@emissary_of_aldebaran Obviously there are other adaptations to living at high latitudes that will co-evolve independently as people move further North (or South in the Southern hemisphere). And it is quite possible that lighter skin evolved independently a number of times in different tribes/races, so not all people with light coloured skins are necessarily the same.

Yes but the hunter gatherer diet which is high in vitamin D does support the claim that we didn't need to evolve paler skin to get more vitamin D from sunlight until agriculure was developed which is far lower in vitamin D.. Bones found here in the UK from 10,000 or so years ago found a diet mainly of seafood and hazlenuts,along with small traces of birds eggs and red meat..Hazlenuts along with cashews have the highest vitamin D levels of any plantfood which generally lacks vitamin D since they don't need its protective qualities and cod liver oil is the highest natural source there is,as are eggs and red meat !
Hunter Gatherers also tend to eat a lot more organ meats than agriculturalists. But if the agriculturalists are also raising livestock they may have a much more reliable source of animal protein.

Given that Neanderthals lived in the Northern hemisphere during the Ice Age, with limited sunlight, and that it is thought that Homo sapiens underwent depigmentation in the northern hemisphere precisely due to lowered levels of sunlight, this idea that Neanderthals were black seems a bit unlikely. Given that black people are also known to be MUCH more likely to suffer from vitamin D deficiency in Europe due to their skin colour and the levels of sunlight in Europe, the black Neanderthal idea seems even less likely.
Well I've also heard that we only evolved a lighter pigment after agriculture because we were now eating a plant based diet low in vitamin D and thus needed whiter skin to compensate for the lack of vitamin D found in Plant food as well as our reduced sunlight
@andrewhall7176 because of higher uv light exposure there. Basically the argument is its a combination of factors. Neither agriculture or lack of uv light exposure alone means insufficient vitamin D. Eating a diet primarily comprised of animal products means you get enough vitamin D. Living close to the equator means you get enough vitamin D. But eating a plant heavy diet while also living in a northerly latitude with significant overcast means you're not getting sufficient vitamin D from either the sun or from your diet. And so a selective pressure is exerted in favour of lighter skin pigment

The theory I heard was not to do with latitude but with the diet becoming more agrarian with settled farming and the move toward a plant based diet. Sounded plausible to me but what do I know.

@neuralwarp There's no real evidence of the known and so, rooted in Sub Saharans, language structures generally, in Europeans and or Asians and Indo peoples... Either African languages came very late and their diaspora created new languages from scratch once out of Africa or indeed, languages developed separately in many places as ideas and relevant things, previously stuck in people's heads, required a reliable way to be expressed... Even animals with known sounds with meanings, have different sounds in different places, indeed, even accents if science is to be accepted...
