Just wanna say, thank you for recommending the equigroomer! We have 2 shorthair cats who shed A LOT, and the brushes we had weren't very good at deshedding, and they didn't like being brushed with them. I tried the equigroomer when they were sleepy, and they purred so much! Definitely worth it for our cats

What shampoos/conditioners do you recommend? My dogs slobber all over themselves playing, the male occasionally pees on the female, so they get pretty stinky. They shed throughout the year, I have also noticed my allergies are agitated by this shedding. They are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. I bathe them every month to two months.

When our children were toddlers we had an Australian Shepherd named Molly that would herd the children. When they were in the front yard, even with both parents present, if the kids crossed the yard halfway mark (to the road) she would either nudge them back towards the house, or just straight up drag them back by the seat of their britches or whatever she could get hold of. She lived to be 18 years old, and has been gone from us for many decades but our sweet girl will live on in our hearts forever. They are absolutely exceptional dogs.
@jasminechnedak

Our Mini Molly is currently 15 and she would do the same thing with our son. Except would be more of a lean as he ran, or rode, to curve him around. People call her my fur baby. I correct them, she is truly my right hand lady.

We had a border collie mix when I was born. Mom never had to worry about my brother or I getting into trouble. Mom just told the dog to watch us, and he herded us away from mischief every time. I always said I was raised by the dog, and Mom just laughed and said he was way more patient and faster than she was. There are 2 Aussie mixes, herding each other and playing tag in our backyard right now! Amazing, high-energy and smart doggo's!!!!

I’ll never forget the night my buddy and I decided to walk to the grocery store almost two miles away because we were too drunk to drive. We didn’t make it far before we started questioning our decision when an Australian Cattle Dog just showed up in front of us. The dog calmly approached us with its tail wagging. It seemed very curious what two high schoolers were doing out late at night walking around smelling like rum. The dog had no tags so we had no idea what to do with it. So all 3 of us continued to the store. Mid-journey we completely fell in love with the dog. It kept its pace with ours, would occasionally look over as we spoke to it and pet it. We got to the store, got the dog some water, and us some snacks. On our way back home as we got closer to the house we started at. The dog suddenly stopped pacing with us and slowly started to walk away. Then disappeared into the night. I’ll never know what happened to the dog or why it chose to spend some time with us. But I’ll always be grateful for it.

I knew an Australian Shepard that was a rescue from a city apartment, but then went to a dairy farm. When she got dropped off at the farm, she did a survey of the property, breathed a huge sigh of relief, and immediately went to work, moving cattle in and out of the barn at milking time. She also had an odd habit-if you were standing around and not paying attention to her, she would tap repeatedly on your foot with hers, until you noticed her and gave her some pets. Great dog!

Mentally, I didn’t handle retirement well…I felt lost, disconnected, with no purpose. And bourbon tastes too good, and suddenly every night was Friday night. I lost both parents, I had to manage their estate to attend to, and keep siblings in different states informed. And one morning, bleary-eyed, I l noticed Sailor sitting quietly, looking up at me, staring at me, intently, just staring. That morning, I quickly realized that I had to get the reins in hand….and I did. She’s not quite ten yet, but on the local trails, she’s like a puppy….and every morning is a new adventure. Run, walk, hike, explore the local state parks, and Rail Trails (I’m a big supporter of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy). Yep. Despite being two VERY energetic breeds, however, she was the least energetic dog I've ever met, to the point that we used to call her a 'cat dog'. She liked to sit quietly in the sun and take naps, and hated to run or play fetch. She definitely had the herding instinct though! She always kept an eye on me when I was a toddler, and we had to leave our bedroom doors open at night so she could come in to check on each of us or else she would bark and scratch. It's been nine years since we lost her, when she was almost 16 years old. I miss you lots, Sadie - thanks for being the best nanny I could've asked for.

It was clear when we adopted her (she was 5 years at the time) that she was not socialized at all. She could not be around other dogs, and when new people were in our home we had to put her outside for a few minutes (she had a particular hatred for teenagers). She did adore us though, and managed to make exactly 1 dog friend in the 6 years we had her. She passed a year ago, it was one of the most devastating moments of my life. @@bellamaz1972 There are pros and cons to adopting. My family adopted about 5 dogs over the years and only one didn't have mental issues (not evident at the time of adoption) or extreme physical issues not divulged. It was very sad and really took a toll on my kids. Our last rescue was (she is still with us at 8 years old after adopting at 2 years) a cockapoo that had been found on the street and obviously owned but just skin and bones. She is lovely and gets on well with our16 year-old Cavachon that we got from a breeder at 10 weeks old. Getting the dog from a reputable breeder is very important. We had to sign a contract that we would never take the dog to a shelter or re-home without contacting the breeder who would gladly take the dog back no matter the age or health. We did see the parents and grandparents of our Cavacon plus got a 2 year health warranty and records of all testing and vet visits. Because he was the largest one of the litter and is above the standard he was neutered at 10 weeks. Lovely dogs can be had by adopting but one should always be aware that many come with issues from mild to severe and take that into consideration before the adoption is final. It is a lifelong commitment to care for animals and that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Yeah, very much depends on the individual dog. A friend from college had one she'd bring to school with her - yes, into the auditoriums, we were allowed to do that with friendly, quiet dogs - very small, hippie school, don't ask! : ) He loved everyone and would even do the many tricks he knew for us and not just when his owner told him. Every command came with a hand sign. Needless to say I signed "bark" to him at least once during a lecture... My uncle's Aussie Border mix on the other hand was completely fixated on him only and he hadn't even raised her from puppyhood. She was completely disinterested in other humans. You'd have to call her over and really insist if you wanted to pet her. Totally fine with me though, I don't believe dogs are here to just please everyone.

I feel so bad. My very first dog had a 2nd liter and my mom fell in love with one of her puppies and took him back home with us. I was maybe 10-11 years old and didn't know anything about dogs but she gave him to me as my sole responsiblity. We only found out he was a mix to the australian sherpherd because our vet said he looked like a blue merle. I loved that dog. He was so smart but I didn't meet his energy needs and he became very wild and hard to handle when going on walks to the point my mom sent him to the shelter. I still hope that some family saw him and fell in love with him and gave him a good home and he lived to be a loving old man. Please don't give young kids high energy pets and blame them for not handling them correctly. They are kids and don't know. You're responsible for that pet over them. I'm still very bitter about my dog being taken away because "I couldn't handle him to behave" when I was barely in 7th grade

I am so sorry for your experience, and I agree that wasn't fair. We raised Aussies and trained them for herding (not that they needed much training), and my cousin and I would train ours for other things too--acting in plays, mostly. A lot of OUR education was in how to train and handle high-energy dogs. I no longer have dogs--my husband and I are out of the home 10hrs a day, and it wouldn't be fair to a dog. But if we could, we would be helping our son learn to handle, train and meet the needs of that dog.

Literally me 🥲 my parents gave me a Yorkshire Terrier for my 11th birthday (he’s still alive till this day) and made him my sole responsibility. All my parents ever helped me with was bathing him, but poop, accidents, feeding, etc, was all my responsibility. And then my (sorry not sorry) stupid sister would refuse to help me (every time the dog did something that inconvenienced her, instead of fixing it herself. She’s call for me and would emphasize that MY dog did something). Everything was always my fault. Someone left the door open and the dog pooped in the room? I picked it up. Dog vomited? I picked it up. Heck, I’d always have to scold my own family as a kid about stop giving the dog human food (even now, he still does not eat dog food happily as when he was a puppy). I even failed miserably to train him for the doggy pads, so my family instead of helping me or paying for classes, literally started making him wear human diapers. I love him to death in all honesty, but asking for him was a mistake. 11 y/o me did not think they were serious when they said he’d be MY dog

When I was a kid, my neighbour had a couple of these (though one was probably mixed with border collie). I used to walk them for pocket money, basically putting on roller blades and half running half letting them drag me around the neighbourhood. One was a fairly standoffish female that got along with very few people (but was very smart and trusted me). She was smart enough to figure out clearing an 8 foot fence the neighbours set up that was supposedly designed to prevent her from escaping and taking a random constitutional. She was also the sitcom archnemesis to my family's lab-border collie mix. The other was an enormous-by-breed-standards red merle who wasn't particularly bright but was incredibly sweet and shook his whole hindquarters when happy to compensate for his lack of tail. I miss those dogs. That is all.

It's true. I read that 20% are born with bobbed tails. That's probably why people started amputating the Aussie Shepherd's tails when they are born with them--because a select few were born without a long tail and people thought it might give those dogs an advantage. It doesn't, but I can see why they might have have thought that. Surgically bobbed tails are banned in Sweden after studies showed it doesn't prevent injury and other European countries are going in that direction as well.

Even when we tried feeding her less, or different foods, she would find a way to maintain her weight. Luckily, it's not enough to be much of a health concern, she just a little chubby. She is super loyal and is always in the same room as me, and when we go outside, she watches down on us from our back porch and sunbathes. I did have to slowly get her used to sleeping in her kennel this last year, because as she has gotten older, she snores really loud. My favorite nickname for her is fluffybutt, for obvious reasons. who tf puts a dog into a dumpster? I can even see desperate people who just can't keep them for good reasons perhaps. They had issues with the fur behind her ears always getting matted even tho they brushed her every 2 days or so. I came to the rescue with being used to having to get matting out of my Turkish Van-Persian Mix cat. Got all mats out and the dog was still wagging her tail, unlike when my sisters bf tried :> Edit: Also, whenever I visited them, I was NOT ALLOWED TO PET THE DOG INSIDE...She was always so happy when I cuddled with her, she peed on the floor. Multiple times. Even when she was just outside And before anyone attacks my sister for "keeping the dog inside": They have 3 walks every day, one of them being at least 1 to 2h long, they also have a yard (where she digs at a mole) and every 2 days or so, she is let over to the neighbours dog, where they play 30min to 1h

They are actually one of the most common dogs down south, can find them with papers for around a couple hundo. Aussies and pyreneese and heelers super cheap around here no matter what papers... my golden retriever on the other hand ran 1k

Also: We love to see big fluffy dogs on a regular grooming schedule!!! The two samoyeds I walk are also groomed monthly, (and their parents keep up with brushing,) their coats are so nice.

I love Australian Shepherds. My grandparents raised Belgian Shepherd and bred their male with a friends' Aussie. The pups were beautiful and so well mannered. The pup my dad kept as a cattle dog had horrible car sickness. My dad ended up giving him to my uncle that trained him as a service dog. My dad named him Bingo and Bingo and my uncle lived together until they both died just days apart. 💔

I adore Australian Shepherds, now it makes sense why I also love Border Collie’s! Although I love every pup I meet. Thanks for the informative videos like this!

My brother’s closest friend’s family, (who lived on the same street as us) has always had Aussies, and oh man are you correct about how high energy, the dad was an Ironman runner and he would go running with their dog Abby just about every day. Abby passed away a few years ago, and their new Aussie is a love bug, she’s so stupid cute.

We have 4 Australian Shepherds and love them all dearly. Friendly affectionate, very smart, and lots of fun! They do require a lot of exercise: we walk 10-12 km a day. They also love training (obedience, agility), which stimulates them mentally. So, if you get one, you must be willing to devote time and attention to them every day. If you put time and energy in to working with your Aussie you will form a great bond and they will become an important member of your family. We love our 4 Aussies! ❤ 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶 ❤️

Thank you for explaining about the Australian shepherd. I’m Australian, living in a rural area, and have never come across this breed, despite hearing about them all over the internet for the last few years. I’ve been really curious to know where they came from!

They are totally an American-made breed! The name is very misleading but they did use imported Australian and New Zealand-bred collies when they were developing this breed and so they decided to keep the "Australian" bit.

@@renlish Cette race a bien été développée aux US mais ses origines viennent du pays Basque français, et ce sont les bergers basques français qui en migrant en Australie pour y trouver du travail ont en même temps amené leurs chiens, d’ou le nom de berger australien.

One important thing she left out, some Aussies are born naturally with a stubby tail.
