The lodge where he had a Staropramen after the hike is the oldest cabana at Lake Bâlea. It was originally built in the year 1905 by the Siebenbürgischer Karpathenverein, the Saxon alpine club from Sibiu. During communism it was expropriated and by the end of communism just a ruin remained, that was than privatized. A Saxon from Avrig/Freck bought it and renovated it the way it looks today. He also runs the cable car, that goes from the Cascada up to the lake.

@@jimsy7al A very beautiful country & surely underrated I'd say. I have visited prior & loved it so much, that I'm now taking my family there very soon. I'm not sure if you've visited Romania, but if you haven't as yet, you're in for a serious treat. It's gorgeous & the people are approachable & friendly. I also enjoyed much of the food. Very rich & tasty offerings abound. I'm a vegetarian, but seriously & sinfully broke the rules in Bucharest, although my discipline has kicked back in & I haven't touched meat since returning home. I really loved eating the very well grilled/bbq'd artisan made thick sausages (served with a deliciously cooked & spicy, onion, garlic, fresh tomato & red pepper sauce) & I was obsessed with the deliciously sweet, homemade, organic, dark grape juice. So good & so full of antioxidants. I loved some of the freshly homemade, flour based, egg, tomato, eggplant, zucchini, leek, potato, polenta, pepper, cabbage & cheesy dishes too. The sweet treats, desserts, baked goods & cakes etc; abound were very good too. I could go on regarding the food, but it's best to be fully surprised once actually there. I wish you well with your future travel & retirement plans. Peace✌

Honestly, one of the best travel vlogs I have ever seen. So much mist at the beginning and after that is that magic tunnel on the top of the road where everything changes. It is amazing how green are Carpathians this Summer (because it is more wet with more rain than in ordinary years), just like it would be Spring somewhere in a valley. At 28:51 there are such amazing sceneries just like the road itself at 23:30. The Carpathian Mountains were also a traditional border between kingdoms of Transylvania and Wallachia, so you are in Wallachia now. ;) I hope that you don't miss Sinaia and Buşteni on this Romanian trip as they are also amazing place in Carpathians with imposing castles Peleş, Pelişor and Cantacuzino.

Gabriel, yes, CASCADA means waterfall in Romanian. The building where you stopped up the mountain, after the tunnel (min 13:08) is a building for Mountain Search and Rescue ("salvamont" in Romanian). My favorite street food is the one you saw in many of the stands called "langosi" - it's like a cheese empanada - you can get it with salty cheese (feta) or with sweet cow cheese, or with other fillings (feta+dill, etc etc)... yum!!!

You really helped to put Romania on my map. As I dont drive, I wonder what the public transportation is like. My guess is not too brilliant but inexpensive. Obviously there probably wont be regular busses to places like this, but maybe some tour is possible, or even a taxi might be doable in Romania.

Romania is very well connected through trains. You have private companies like astra trans carpatic /softtrans/ etc and the government ones cfr . Usually the private ones are more looking like bullets. There is a metro in Bucharest and one under construction in cluj. I lovee traveling by trains in Romania especially in the summer when it’s raining or in the winter when it’s snowing it looks like some fairy land. Much better than a lot of other European countries. My travel time is limited, so I would not enjoy the cold and foggy weather conditions during the summer months. Set high in the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest mountains of the Southern Carpathians, the Tunelul Capra - Balea Lac is 884m long. The road passing through the tunnel is the infamous Transfăgărăşan (DN7C National Road). At an elevation of 2,025−2,042 m above the sea level, it’s also the highest tunnel of the country. Its construction began in 1972, and the mountain was drilled in the fall of 1973. More than 40,000 cubic meters of rock were excavated with the help of hundreds of people, mostly military for that a year later, in 1974, the inauguration would take place during the rule of Nicolae Ceauşescu.

In the 80s a group of us were traveling along the back roads. In those days there were only paper maps and no cell phones. We were lost and the sun was setting. We saw lights in a distance that seemed like a village. We stopped. Had dinner at a hotel. People were odd looking and we kept in catching them staring at us. After we were driving out and leaving the lights we looked back and THERE WERE NO LIGHTS to look back at. We then realized that we did not say a word to each other during the whole time. They were pale. There was music going on couples were ballroom dancing. My chicken was served raw in the middle and I sent it back. Anyway after we were done we proceeded to get into the car and drive out of the village. All of the sudden we approached the place where we were staying - not lost any more. We agreed that we had a strange experience and agreed to return back to the village the following morning. We drove retracing our steps BUT there was no village to be found!!! To this day we will mention that experience - strange indeed. Beautiful country side though! This was somewhere on the outskirts of Timisoara .

You and Robert Polasek are the real grekophilos! I saw also almost 20 islands in Greece. Do not miss Lefkada, Skyros and Kythira. I saw now you are in Romania, do not miss Maramures area. Regards, Cristian

24:16 that "thing" might be a drift trike. On RU-vid I see some videos with more/less similar engines driven on the Transfagarasean. Then it can also be a "three-wheel motor cycle".

Very nice adventure, so beautiful. Did Frankenstein and Dracula originate from Romania? It just reminds me of the scenery from the movies.😊❤

I don't know about Frankenstein, but Dracula and vampires for sure. Our grand grand fathers even put a big nail in dead people's hearts so that they won't return as the living dead, as werewolves, as vampires or any other mythical figure. Some do it even today in some remote villages. Dead should stay dead. :)

The important modern writers of the 19th century like Edgar Allan Poe described the very real terror of the time to not be buried alive. For different reasons it was discovered that people being buried in a deep coma or a "clinical death", because medicine was not enough developed to prove someone 's death, awoke in the grave dying a terrible death by suffocating. I know the case of a lady who asked one of her terrorized best friends to stab her heart with a dagger after her death to be sure that she won't be buried alive. On the other side an ancient belief was that a person could be not visibly possessed by an evil devilish spirit (and yes the popular name of the dynasty of Vlad was "the Devil"), even being a faithful, normal good one. Once dead the evil could come back to the world in the villages bringing especially mental illnesses like psychosis or depression or illness and pandemics killing the livestock and the animals. It's a collective psychosis. Like the belief that the sorcerers are bringing misfortune, diseases and death of the people. Some have a limited intelligence and are not able to understand or learn scientific truth. They will keep their fantastic, mystic, supernatural beliefs and refuse the scientific explanation. The church oppose these ancient beliefs as not being theologically Christian. Legally attacks on the dead people are punished.

I have discovered that there are large regions where a secret highly symbolic gesture is still performed on the body of the dead by someone very close from the family : with a nail they will make a wound on the arm of the dead one. I don't know if they are aware of the origin and the significance of this ritual.

0:15 Finally, buy yourself a pair of shoes. They cost less than your hotel bill or your meal at a restaurant. And when you no longer need the shoes, give them to someone who doesn't have them. Then your social ego is also satisfied.
