Beautiful derelict old house built in the 1790’s by a family of quakers who were related too one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Lots of history and beautiful architecture, hopefully the house is saved and restored for future generations too admire. Unfortunately a large development has begun next door and I fear it won’t be long for this historic old house. Thanks for watching! Hope everyone has a great New Year!!

I love this house. I can't believe how good a shape it's in after 200 years. I would love to restore it. I hope someone does!

I guess it's very important when you are renovating an old home or even having a home built to buy surrounding acreage so that there is no risk of developers driving you out.

I really like that Quaker house. There is something very comfortable & steady/stable/strong feeling about it. It feels like a safe harbour. Quakers often value good design as they believe in not being wasteful. It feels like it would be a good house to live in.

@@urbanexploringwithkappy1773 It is very sad when a place like that is demolished but at least you have been able to create a record of it & show us all. Maybe there will be a last minute repreive, with someone deciding to buy that good house instead of demolishing it. Even if the house is demolished I beleive some of its good spirit will remain in the land.

I love your videos. I am old now, .. I remember the early 60's and the great abandoned houses (ALL gone now) we use to explore as children in Atlanta. My siblings and I did it as a hobby. It was nervy, sometimes dangerous, against the no trespassing rules and so, so fun., My snooping habit of abandoned houses continued as our family moved around the country (as boomers did), exploring the abandoned homes and graveyards in Connecticut, and then on to the really beautiful abandoned farms in rural Ohio. Thank you for your documentation. Your videos make me tear my hair in sad remembrance and really can bring me to tears.

So many comments about the ox yoke and no one mentions the cool wood spoke Model T wheel behind it! 😏 My first criteria on whether a house is restorable is to check for cracks in the plaster. Lots of cracks= needs a new foundation, that's a lot of work and money. This one? Virtually no cracks. Minimal work to get this one good enough for me to move in! Very very cool house, love the fireplaces, doors (and handles), built-ins.

Okay it looks like there was a major update in the 1940s late 40s early 50s and another update in the late '60s early '70s. The metal sink and cabinets our post-war so consider the mid-century modern. The hanging oil look lamp was very popular in the '70s as was the orange and yellow wallpaper. As for the wooden thing in the room with the tile on the wall, it's called a yoke and it was used for team of oxen to pull either plows or wagons. That type of yoke was never used on horses. Horses use individual yokes typically made of leather and wood. Quakers were religious purists and did not tend to use or have anything flashy. Think of the man on the Quaker oats box. Quaker oats was literally founded by Quakers. You can also tell that this was owned by Quakers because nothing is ornate. If you look at the spindles on the staircase going up, you'll see that the spindles themselves are very plain. The doors themselves are functional. There's nothing grandiose. It's just very functional. From the looks of it it doesn't seem that it would take a whole lot of renovation to bring this house up to code unless there is major problems with the foundation. I would love somebody to snap this beauty up and restore it to its original state.

Hi, you two! Good to hear your happy voices. Hope you had fun over the holidays! Hope everybody did! Wow, what a great kitchen! I'd fix that up country style with a six burner reproduction gas stove, a farmhouse sink....the works. That hearth (pronounced like heart, just with the h on the end) is amazing! I'd replace the crane and the spider so I could cook there. In case those terms aren't familiar, Kappy, the crane is the metal apparatus that holds the swinging arms for moving pots closer or farther from the fire. The spider is, as I'm told, the swinging arms themselves. That wooden box between the rafters just begs to be explored! I'm glad I wasn't there, I'd be looking in that, for sure! The desk is 20th century, post world war, is my guess. Now, the white blanket chest across the room is another story altogether! It is constructed in the traditional style, so its age might be hard to guess. It could be new or it could be centuries old. The presence of dovetails in themselves is not an indicator of great age, though the type of dovetails can be used to establish hand or machine construction. These chests are made for brides by their intended husbands (or for them by more skilled craftsmen). Young ladies use these chests to safely store the blankets she has quilted or, perhaps, woven for their marriage. It's a hope chest. It's strange that those are metal cabinets. Perhaps they were trying to save money on wooden ones. Now that farmhouse table is very interesting! It looks to be in good repair. Nice find. This room seems as if it's waiting for someone to come and finish clearing it out. Either that or you've caught it early and it'll look like all the others we see in twenty years after vandals have come calling! Still, somebody IS keeping the place very neatly mowed. I'll bet it's on someone's radar to fix this place up or maybe sell it (or both!) That built-in cabinet does have some age on it, judging by the paint's crackling on the door. Or maybe somebody just isn't such a good painter! Those curved walls at the closed off opening to the left of the door are wonderfully done! The door is of very old construction and deserves to be salvaged when they come for the furnishings. Those dishes are Pfalzgraf from the latter decades of the last century. Definitely not cheap! That's an ox yoke, possibly meant for decoration. It doesn't appear to have any wear on it. Kappy, I learned something from Sunday Morning on CBS last week and you might be interested. The actual knob on the top of a newel post is called a newel cap. The newel is the post it's stuck on! There are collectors of the caps and even museums dedicated to all things staircase, rails, spindles, newels and caps! Who knew? Honey, those feathers ain't from no chicken! THEM ARE VULTURE FEATHERS! POOP, too! You might just find out what's making that noise, Kappy, and it might not be an animal! Now this is a big house! That hallway seemed to go on forever! That attic is big enough to live in! I'd hate to have to keep this place up, but Quakers have lots of kids, rightfully so. Somebody's got to help with chores! Really, though, this house is amazing! If the electrical and plumbing are good, it wouldn't take much to restore it. Now, where did I put that Powerball ticket? If I ever hit the numbers, you'll be the first to know because I'll be needing some addresses to talk to someone about buying their real estate. Seriously, guys, I certainly do appreciate all the words of encouragement you two have given me during the long weeks of my recovery from surgery. It's been a very hard time and I've despaired more than once, but I'm lots better now and dealing mainly with the symptoms of my old enemy, Still's Disease. I wish I COULD have that removed! It's a freaking nightmare all by itself. All I can do is suck it up and live it out. Ah, but one day I'll be free. Nevertheless, my malady is not what we should be talking about. You two are the stars of the show. You really hit it out of the park with this house, kids! This house is absolutely wonderful! A great job on the explore, too, even going down in the basement! Extra points for that! At least your vulture seems to have flown south for the winter. That's a mercy, anyway! Thanks for letting this old girl tag along, you two! I needed to spend this time with you more than you can guess. Much love to both of you. Happy trails, drive safely and, as always, take proper precautions on your explorations. I look forward to seeing your next adventure! Becca

@sarahstrong7174
@sarahstrong7174 Год назад
That room where the yoke is may have been a second kitchen, may have been used at various seasons or for producing conserves etc but on the other hand it may at one time have been in use as a dairy. Kappy has brought us another wonderful old house. I love the handrail/balustrade of the main staircase-that was a work of art. While it’s had lots of updates there’s still so many nice traces of what was there in details like the small brass doorknob, older mantles and trim. The unusual door knob you showed us upstairs is often called “ elbow latch” as if your hands were full you could use your elbow to open. I think the chair you noted as Eastlake is more of the later press back variety - closer to the Nouveau style. It’s a wonderful house and I’m thankful you took us along. Happy New Years to you both and safe travels.

Would you consider buying this house/property and fixing it all up! It is so beautiful for being 200 years old. Pretty much old paint chipping off the walls. It can be modernized and made to be so incredibly gorgeous

A lot of stripping, scrapping, sanding and painting and this house could be saved. Really cool old place.

What a beautiful old home! That would be so much fun to renovate it and bring it back to its former glory! The attic is huge! There's a lot of potential right there! (Master bedroom with ensuite bathroom.)

Yay. Hi Ruby. This house is just unbelievable. Beautiful. That wooden thing was an old ox yoke. They hooked it up to the oxen when it was time to do farm work. That staircase is a work of art. How were the "vibes" of this house to you? While I'm watching the vid, it's just so nice to "feel" this house coming through for us to see. It seems very peaceful, how did you feel while there? That wood in that closet was just awesome. Could be used for a sauna maybe? Who's hammering in the background when you went upstairs?

Cool old oxen yoke! What a place! Late in joining. It’s been rough days; the old gent I cared for passed on 1/22023. We enjoyed your videos together. And now I’m winding down tonight, enjoying this cool place. What a find!! As always thanks for posting!!!

That "thing" in the second kitchen was an oxen yoke. The wallpaper was likely late sixties early 70 's judging by the colors. Very cool house!

At 4:39, you ask what is that thing. It looks like a yoke - something you'd put on a pair of oxen. Beautiful house!
