In today’s video, bespoke shoemaker Dominic Casey walks Kirby Allison through the history and construction of the famous Wellington Boot.
Far removed from the cheap rubber versions known today, the construction of these famous boots was actually a revolution in boot making during their inception.
Dominic plans to actually make a new pair for Kirby, using the original design. So join us as Dominic takes Kirby's measurements and takes us on a journey through the creation of a pair of real Wellington boots.

I actually used a welt cutter in my father’s shoe repair shop in the early-mid 1960’s. Love this video and all the other shoe and boot videos. Brings back a lot of memories.

As a pipe smoker I still have all of my English pipes purchased at Dunhill, Davidoff and JJ Fox’s over 20 years ago. Although I no longer play polo, I still use my wonderful 16 year old Horace Batten boots when I get the chance to go riding and hacking about. Thanks for sharing this video. Kind regards, SF.

Absolutely fascinating history of boot making, I have always been way more interested in boots, I especially love Chelsea boots, they can pretty much be worn worn on all occasions, except black tie of course, very excited to see how Dominic realises your new Wellington style boots!

Is it just me or do things just sound more interesting when attached to an English accent? Nice interviewing Kirby, just dropping in a word that Dominic was searching for and keeping the conversation moving in the right direction without getting in the way. As a lover of all things purple, I loved Dominic's ensemble. The Lee Miller series was fascinating, I'm sure this one will be as well.

Another astonishing History Detail................. Today, one of the oldest guild symbols is that of the shoemakers. In 1370, Emperor Charles IV granted the German shoemakers the right to use the imperial double-headed eagle as their coat of arms and seal for eternity - a sign of gratitude for the heroic deeds of the journeyman shoemaker Hans Sagan. On February 17, 1370, near the village of Rudau near Königsberg in Samland (East Prussia), the German Order of Knights under the command of Grand Master Winrich Knieprode fought against the Russians and Lithuanians, whose leaders were Algirdas and Keistut. At the height of the bloody battle, which went down in history under the name of "Battle of Rudau", the fortune of war seemed to have left the Order of Knights, the fighters retreated before the ever-increasing superiority. When the battle was already lost, one of the youngest but boldest soldiers (he was a journeyman shoemaker by trade) took the flag with the imperial coat of arms and charged towards the enemy again, dragging his comrades forward with him. After further hard fighting and pushing back the enemy, the decisive bravery of these journeyman shoemakers won the victory. The shoemaker Hans Sagan was appointed and ennobled by the emperor as an old journeyman. The award certificate is still preserved and reads: "Since you shoemakers have preserved the honor and glory of my imperial house through your bravery, my imperial grace towards you shall be that you and all shoemakers shall continue to bear the imperial double eagle on shield and flag." The imperial coat of arms, unlike all other craft coats of arms, does not show any tools or products. Even today, the legends associated with the coats of arms of the craft guilds are passed on by the masters to their apprentices. After all, tradition obliges and distinguishes the craft and its master craftsmen.

What a fascinating discussion. With such a long, illustrious history it's quite sad to see the demise of long boots for men. Especially with versions for women seeming to be so popular today in casual and professional settings. Whenever I think of "Wellington" boots for today's man it's usually in the form of cheap rubber versions for gardening or expensive tech-driven models for heavy industry work.

What does Dominic know about the George boot as a derivative of the military Wellington boot? Does it bare any relation to the later Chukka boot?

The George boot was supposedly popularised by the late King who disliked mess wellington boots (i. e. Wellington boots worn with military mess dress uniforms) such that he had his boot maker come up with the design named after him with a lace at the instep. A true George boot is actually distinct to that of the colloquial chukka boot in that the rear quarters are set much further back. The reason for this is that when mess wellington boots are worn, they are normally worn with cavalry ‘overalls’ which are tight fitting riding trousers worn as part of mess uniforms, importantly the overalls feature a leather straps at the bottom of the hem that buckle under the waist of the boots, covering up the entirety of the shaft of the boot. Consequently, George boots looked identical to mess wellington boots when worn with overalls as they would cover the lacing at the instep. They eventually became a cheaper alternative, becoming a general issue item by the British army. Chukka boots on the other hand are a laced variation of the jodhpur boot which was popularised by the late maharaja of jodhpur that used them to play polo hence the name (a chukka being a period of play in polo). John Lobb’s archives actually feature a few laced jodhpur boot designs from the early 20th century reflecting this.

The high cowboy boot heel is not a riding boot thing/requirement (fashion being justified). Riding boots can use a heel, but it need not be bigger than the average dress shoe heel so the pair at Walmer castle could be for riding but with the idea applied of having them be less built up as an early "prototype" pair. As was the idea of the wellington boot. Walking more comfortably with a heel is another story, but as humans used to be ball of the foot walkers and not heel walkers like today there are merit to it, but zero drop shoes does have advantages.
