The thing with Hulk is he is a sympathetic character. When Bruce transforms, Hulk is his own being and really wants to be left alone and doesn’t hurt anyone that are innocent. However, he has to fight whoever is attacking him whether it’s the army, villains, and even heroes because they all believe he is a monster but tries to do good. Stan Lee based him off of the Frankenstein monster in that they are misunderstood and treated poorly by everyone.

I'm sorry to be such a bad nerd but. Umm actually. You are right the Hulk is his own character in that he is a fragmented part of Banners psyche. When Banner was a child he and his mother were brutally abused by his father and while I'm pretty sure he never developed full blown MPD, the serum did bring forth the Green Hulk persona. The green hulk persona being the physical representation of unchecked nuclear power (a huge fear at the time the original comics were being made) as well as being paired with the Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde type of character trope. I would full well love to say that Hulk never fought anyone good but even Stan Lee has said that as a result of his wild rages he was often depicted as the peoples hero in one comic only to be enemy #1 in the next weeks. Even in this movie at General Ross tracks Bruce's episodes by the reports and body counts. Collateral damage is a very big thing with the hulk as he takes down entire buildings when he fights. But through it all even with General Ross hunting him across the world and never being able to rest because of one bad guy or another the person Hulk hates most is Banner. "Puny Banner" "Weak Banner" Because he couldn't protect himself or his mother when his father killed his mother. And Banner hates Hulk the most because he fears him and quite frankly he, barring magical and even then that's iffy, can't die, but the body count keeps climbing and the ghosts in the closet never get any quieter.
@DragonbIaze052
@DragonbIaze052 Год назад
@@mystchevious1129 Sorry to be even nerdier, but... Bruce has full-blown DID (which hasn't been called MPD since 1994). Dr. Leonard Sampson, the guy Betty's dating in this movie, addresses the condition at length in the comics, most notably in Immortal Hulk. Each Hulk he turns into is its own identity, with Big Guy being the most well-known. Also, it's not that hard to kill them, especially if they're in Bruce's body at the time. He definitely dies at least once in the MCU (the bridge), probably died jumping out of the helicopter in this movie, and there's a possible past death mentioned in Avengers. The thing is, when a gamma mutate dies, they're able to walk back out of super-hell and come back to life. Bruce is willing to accept death, but the others aren't, which is why he almost always comes back either as Big Guy or Devil.

This is the most underrated MCU movie and had the best depiction of romance in the franchise. They really had each other's back and were in it together no matter the consequences. It was them against the world and you could see and feel it. Also although I like Ruffalo, Norton was great as Banner too. And I loved the very memorable, really effective, and moving main theme music as well. It was definitely one of the best scores in all of the MCU. And my personal favorite. The reason Buce becomes the Hulk so fast -- in the opening credits sequence! -- is because this was the second MCU movie and they still weren't sure the MCU would be successful. So this film is written as a semi-sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk (2003), but with a different cast. In fact, it used to be possible to buy a DVD double feature that included Hulk (2003) and Incredible Hulk (2008). That movie covers the origin of the Hulk and the opening sequence basically recaps the events of that movie -- though the origin was changed slightly to reference the Hulk television series (1977-1982), just to make things even more confusing. Hulk (2003) ends with Bruce Banner in hiding in South America, so this movie begins with Bruce in hiding in South America.
@wolfofthewest8019
@wolfofthewest8019 2 года назад
Also, another thing I do like about this movie is that they don't make Leonard (Ty Sheridan's character, Bettie's current boyfriend) a bad guy, which is so easy and typical when you have a love triangle. Yes, he calls in the military and narcs on Bruce, but he does it out of genuine concern for Bettie's safety and clearly recognizes he was wrong. It's strongly implied by the later films that Bettie goes back to Leonard after this movie. And, decent, understanding man that he is, he probably takes her back.

This is honestly the best Hulk portrayal in the MCU. Norton wanted to continue exploring the dark themes in this film because he liked where it was going, and Marvel was at first all about it, but then they did a 180 and said "lol no, we're making him comic relief", so he left the project. This is why Mark Ruffalo plays Banner in the later films. The Hulk is a manifestation of Bruce's deep seated anger borne out of childhood trauma that he's repressed. The experiments with the super soldier serum and the gamma radiation just made it into a physical manifestation rather than just a mental one. This also has the effect of making the Hulk stronger the angrier he gets; in theory, there is no upper limit to his strength, depending on his rage level. The madder you make him, the harder it's going to be to stop him, and I love that. This is also why Abomination was doomed to fall; Abom's strength is about twice that of baseline Hulk, but his power doesn't increase with fury like Hulk's does, so the longer the fight went on, it was inevitable that Hulk would win. And yes, Sam Stearns is supposed to become a classic comic villain, The Leader, which is hinted at when the contaminated blood drips into his head wound and his head starts pulsating. The Leader is kind of the opposite of the Hulk: physically weak but mentally overpowering, and able to control gamma-rays with his mind. There's also something very appealing, at least to me, of letting go of all your worries, doubts, and fears, and becoming a giant green rage-monster :P

Yh I personally love this interpretation of Hulk, I’m not the biggest fan of the direction they went with the character for the MCU, they just watered him down. He’s supposed to be emotionally unchained. He’s supposed to have these animalistic features. I also really like the CGI they did for him. And also Abomination. I’m a Film guy and someone who hasn’t read any of the comics ( sry ) and so when the characters or story aren’t 100% to how they are in the comics I’m not upset by it, but if I did read them, the very purpose of having a film is that it’s going to be different, it’s going to be unique. It’s kinda like how theres different iterations of comics, not all of em are the same. I very much like that this interpretation had Bruce having to deal with his anger and to get it under control. It was very much a balancing act for him to keep his cool. I’m very much a fan the darker, grittier and grounded movies. For example I like Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man the most for those reasons. Don’t get it twisted, Maguire is the OG. I could totally see a world where both The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man are in the same universe. Very intrigued as to what She Hulk is going to be about as we see Blonsky. Curious if we’ll see some sort of bridge between what Norton and Ruffalo have done and if we’ll hear what Blondky has been up to ( Prior to his brief appearance in Shang Chi )

Hulk was supposed to have a bigger role in the Avengers. Marvel thought they had Norton/Tyler pretty much until Endgame. Who would turn down the kind of money they were going to throw at them? Edward Norton, that's who (commonly said to be one of the hardest actors to work with in Hollywood). Lol. After Norton said he was only doing 1 film, they had to find a replacement (Ruffalo) and put Hulk on the back burner while giving Spiderman and Thor more prominent roles. At least that's my understanding of the entire character design change once Ruffalo took over to "smart Hulk"... Norton himself is a big Hulk fan, and read the comics as a kid. He played the character as close to the comic as he could. He wanted to do an additional 2 "dark" Hulk films (think a Hulk trilogy like The Dark Knight with Christian Bale). The studio wouldn't back him. Norton wanted an enormous budget, for a very "risky" high concept film. They wouldn't give him what he wanted because it cost too much, and gave him too much control, so he walked. "In 2010, shortly before announcing The Avengers at the San Diego Comic Con, Feige released a statement clarifying why Norton was let go. “Our decision is definitely not based on monetary factors,” Feige said, “but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members.” In response, Norton’s agent said in a statement that Feige initially wanted the actor to continue playing the Hulk, and that the decision to let him go “seemed to us to be a financial decision.” He called Feige’s comments “mean-spirited, unprofessional, disingenuous, and clearly defamatory.”" Imagine if they'd just let Edward Norton do whatever he wanted for 2 more "Dark Knight" styled films. This was "Batman Begins"...

Most people consider “Iron Man” to be the start of the MCU proper, but this was intended as the ‘official’ first film of the franchise. The vast majority of fans completely ignore this movie for some reason however. Even if they do acknowledge it, it’s usually their least favourite in the franchise. There was another version of the origin story several years before this one, directed by Ang Lee and starring Eric Bana as Bruce, simply titled “Hulk”. It was a bit more experimental in film style and is largely forgotten by MCU fans, but might be worth a look, if only for it’s curiosity value. I was living in Toronto during the summer when this film was being shot (sorry, that wasn’t really Harlem, but actually downtown Yonge street) and saw up close many of the props used, like damaged vehicles and US style street furniture.

Rest in peace, William Hurt (the man who played General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross). Also, Mark Ruffalo, believe it or not, was the director's original choice to play the Hulk in this movie. Pretty interesting. Well, next up is Iron Man 2, then you have Thor and Captain America's respective origin films, and then The Avengers. You're halfway through Phase 1.

Hulk is one of the Marvel Comics Universe's most powerful characters. Tragically, Bruce's mother died when he was very young, and his father was very verbally and physically abusive towards him throughout his childhood, and Bruce greww up with a lot of repressed anger toward his father. The experiment that irradiated him was the catalyst for his power, but his anger or pain triggers the metamorposis. The madder Hulk gets, the stronger he gets, thereby making his physical strnegth near limitless. Two inspirations for his character were the classic novels of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (misunderstood creature) and Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (duality of man and monster).

This movie was a tribute to the 70's TV show, the Music in the background when Bruce is getting to the Mexican town is the main theme of the the TV show, the name of the tune is The Lonely Man, just in case you want to hear it. One of the students recording the video of the fight in the university is Jack Mcgee, one of the characters on the show, a reporter. You can also see when he is in Brazil, that scene when he is watching TV, Bill Bixby(he played Banner) and Lou Ferrigno(the big security guard with the pizza) he was the Hulk. Even the accident in the opening scene was portrait the same as in the show. It's a shame this movie is so underrated.

10:53 The man with Betty is Dr. Leonard Samson. In the comics, he did work on a way to separate Bruce from the Hulk. While working closely together, he and Betty did become close. Leonard did expose himself to Gamma radiation and became a green-haired muscleman. Bruce was feeling abandoned by Betty and tried to commit suicide by detonating the device holding the purged radiation, which only allowed the mindless Hulk to escape. In order to end the mindless rampage, Doc Samson had to help fight the Hulk and get Banner and Hulk merged again. In the comics, this allowed Banner to become known eventually as the green-skinned Professor Hulk after a long time as grey-skinned "Joe Fix-It" working in Las Vegas.

@glennwelsh9784
@glennwelsh9784 2 года назад
Though this is the only Hulk movie with Edward Norton in the role, it is still effectively canon to the MCU, as later films do reference events and characters in this movie. For example, in one of the Avengers films, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner mentions how he "broke Harlem", alluding to this film's climactic fight. There are varying stories behind Norton's departure, though it is believed that Norton wanted to be more creatively involved in this film, and it's said that he even involved himself in rewriting portions of the film while shooting. Apparently, this upset Marvel Studios, as they wanted to maintain as much of their creative control going forward as they could. That's understandable when you consider how interconnected the MCU films are and how much planning is required to make sure all the dots connect from movie to movie. So rather than deal with this issue going forward, they recast Norton with Ruffalo.

In the *Agents of SHIELD* tv show they explain that Abomination was placed in suspended animation and kept at a facility called The Icebox. Later (I'd explain how, but its a major spoiler) he escapes and he was last seen in *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,* where he is participating in superhuman underground fighting. He's supposed to appear in the upcoming She-Hulk series. Samuel Sterns, the doctor who "cures" Bruce, is a character from the comics called *The Leader.* The comic book character has a giant, oversized brain in a massive head and green skin as a result of exposure to gamma radiation (which gave the comic book Hulk his powers), and is sort of the opposite of the Hulk -- where as gamma radiation made Hulk super-strong, it made the Leader super-smart. He's a super scientist who can read people's minds and control them telepathically. So in this movie, when the Hulk juice drips into Stern's head wound and his head starts bubbling and expanding, that's the origin story of the MCU's Leader. This character has never appeared again, not even a mention. One of several dangling plot lines of the MCU. Also, there's a one-shot short film in which it's revealed that SHIELD actually wanted to recruit the Abomination for the Avengers, but Phil Coulson thought this was a terrible idea (and it is), so he sends Tony knowing that Tony's ego and smarmy personality will rub Ross the wrong way and make him refuse to cooperate.

Lots of nods to the 70s TV show "The Incredible Hulk," which is incidentally one of my favorite takes on the Hulk. The opening of this film echoes the opening sequence of the show, they got a cameo from the late Bill Bixby, who played David Banner (renamed from Bruce because an exec didn't like the name Bruce) in one of his other shows when Bruce is channel surfing in Brazil, Lou Ferrigno played Hulk in that show and plays the security guard who gets bribed with pizza here, when Bruce is returning to civilization after his first incident they play "The Lonely Man," the very memorable outro music from the show. What I love about that series is that, as much as David is afraid of what the Hulk can do, we see constantly that Hulk only uses force against those who deserve it, and then only as much force as necessary to protect himself or others. Stan Lee once talked about how he felt it was very important that Bruce became the Hulk in the comics in a heroic way, hence his original origin of being part of a nuclear weapon test, seeing a kid had driven into the testing range, and going out to throw the kid in a ditch to get him away from the explosion, but Bruce couldn't make it to shelter in time. What the series did was expand on that: David Banner was a medical doctor, his research was about helping people and exploring the limits of the power of the human body. David is fundamentally a good man who doesn't want to hurt anyone. Hulk is David, so Hulk is fundamentally good and doesn't want to hurt anyone. In the comics, this has not been consistent. Hulk has gone from antisocial to outright misanthropic, depending on the incarnation. This was eventually established to be because Bruce has Dissociative Identity Disorder as a result of an abusive father, and there actually several Hulks who are all his alters. But I generally prefer the idea that Bruce and Hulk are essentially the same person, and I love Bruce's arc in the MCU. And no matter how many times I see this movie, HULK. . . ***SMASH!!!*** still gives me chills.

Hi Addie. I will probably get arguments about "canon", but I must say that you watched the wrong "Hulk" movie. I am not saying which movie is better or which connects to the MCU. The first Hulk movie was called "Hulk" (2003). At the end of that movie, he goes to South America. You will notice that this movie "The Incredible Hulk" starts in South America. The first movie is the one where he first becomes the Hulk. It stars Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly. Then comes this movie TIH The Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton. There is some reason why the MCU had to use a different Hulk actor, which is Mark Ruffalo. I like all three actor's portrayals. They are each playing the Hulk at different stages of his development. Eric Bana is a normal guy. Ed Norton is trying to live with 'the other guy' inside him. Lastly, Mark Ruffalo is the completed new person that Bruce becomes after living with the Hulk for years. These are the differences in the Bruce parts of Hulk. The Hulk part progresses also. It is funny that Bruce Banner was played by Eric Bana. (Pronounced as "Bane-err" or "Banner") He shortened his name to Bana from Banavic, or something similar. The Hulk in the television series was David Banner. There is an episode of this show that features Thor. In the movie Hulk, David Banner is his father. In all other media the character was called Bruce Banner.

The Hulk became a household name in the 70s when CBS approached Kenneth Johnson to do a superhero TV series. Back then it was virtually impossible to do a seriously themed superhero show or movie. (With the exception of the 1978 Superman movie). Plus Johnson didn't even like comic books. But after reading Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables", he decided to re-adapt the Incredible Hulk into a modern version of the novel. Focusing on Dr. Banner and the friendships/relationships he would make while on the run from an investigative reporter. Bill Bixby brought a much needed charisma and charm to the otherwise guilt ridden Dr Banner, whom in the series had his name changed to David. Richard Kiel was originally cast as the Incredible Hulk for his large size, but when he was put into costume and Johnson's son saw him, his reaction was, "That's not the Hulk!' At one point Arnold Schwarzeneger was asked to play the jolly green giant, but was filming "Conan the Barbarian" at the time and had to pass. But he recommended his body building friend/rival Lou Ferigno for the part. While Ferigno was not the size they were looking for, his muscular build and lifetime fandom of the Hulk (In fact the Hulk inspired him to become a bodybuilder) made him the perfect choice. In fact he would go on to voice the Hulk in the MCU and has a cameo in the Hulk movie as the security guard.
