As I am Greek Orthodox, I am so glad that you never belittle Christians or any other religion and their followers/believers in an any of your videos. You are always most welcome to our humble places of worship. I still think your visit to the holy city in Jerusalem is one of your best ever. But this is up there as your best. Yasoo

So true. In a few videos, while on hikes and shirtless because of the heat, Gabriel has stopped before entering isolated Greek Orthodox Churches in the middle of nowhere to wear a shirt. He wouldn’t enter the churches otherwise. Respect!

Visited there about 15 years ago. I stayed in the little town below and caught the morning public bus up to the top to the most further monastery and then slowly walked back down the hill ....about 5 K back to the town, visiting monasteries and enjoying the country views along the way. It was in spring time so not hot and busy. A wonderful memory.

We are taking a tour, so I don't know if their mini bus will drive us to where the public bus stops. Walking down slowly with stops will be fine for us. From the bus stop, how far is the walk going to the monastery? Or can you take pictures from the bus stop area?
@stellamarina4123

Buses will stop at the monasteries which are the only places scattered along that road@@tonyo7324

Thank you Gabriel for the opportunity to visit Meteora. I was there in the mid 60s and I never forgotten it. It's a very spiritual place and I feel so grateful that thanks to you I was able to this virtual visit. Go well Gabriel and keep filming.

In the northwest corner of Thessaly, just beyond the town of Kalambaka rise sandstone peaks where monks settled in around the 11th century. Meteora, meaning ‘suspended in air’, is famous for its monasteries perched atop vertical peaks - but few know that before their construction in the 14th century, hermit monks first climbed these soaring stones to settle in the caves and hollows of the rocks as early as the 9th century. As hermits, they lived a life of solitude and isolation but legend has it they would climb down on Sundays for mass, held at Doupiani. By the 12th century, Meteora was home to a thriving ascetic community.

Until the beginning of the 20th century there wasn't any stairs for the monasteries like there is now. Supplies and people were going up and down using a net (shaped like a bag) hanging in the end of a long rope. They pulled the rope up using a wheel system. Somewhere in the video in the first monastery I think, there are some directions given on the wall by arrow and there is one saying "net" 7:01 . There is a particular room with the wheel where this antique "elevator" leads. Google meteora lift...

Went there as a child in the 80's. Still have vivid memories, an absolute wonder. Just returned from Leonidio area,not far from Sparta and Tripoli. If you haven't already been there, the monasteries are amazing. Especially Panagia Elona, St John Prodromos and Mega Spileo, to name a few.

Stunning video gabe as always, so glad you showed the monasteries as well as the stunning settings it was very interesting to see how wonderfully well kept the condition of Monasteries are kept in I seem to recall, years and years ago the only way of getting inside the monasteries was by being hauled up in a basket on a very very long rope , your video of the Monasteries reminded me of another famous well known traveler / travel writer Parick Leigh Fermor i think he stayed / lodged over night in some of those monasteries or it may of been the Monasteries on Mount Athos (carnt remember which) during his travels through greece on foot from the Hook of Holland to Istanbul in the 1930s when he was able to live on £5 gbp a month i think he wrote 3 travel books about that journey.

Now mount Athos Gabriel, that's an idea !!! If you secure a permit, then you can stay at the monasteries, that means no expenses at all !!! Rare scripts and treasures, as this area was not subjected to the ottoman rule. It is a very spiritual experience, if someone is open to it !! Since women are not allowed to go there, some footage would be great!!

Hi Gabriel, Simply spectacular every Christian should put this on their list as important as Jerusalem to see as well as other religious locations. These monasteries are incredibly well maintained for the years they have. They must have taken an incredible amount of time to build because there were no trucks or heavy equipment in the past.

If you have the chance to see it there's an entertaining action movie called "Sky Riders" from 1976 starring James Coburn that has the monasteries in Meteora as a crucial aspect of the movie. Terrorists are holding a family hostage in the monastery and a team attempt a stealth rescue by hang gliders. It's all done before CGI so the action scenes in the climax are pretty thrilling - you're bound to recognize all of the locations at this point.
