The Incredible Ordeal of an ORPHANED GOSLING

I think you're right that the ones who already have babies are much more willing to adopt an orphan. I kept hoping the original mom would come back but at least this little one found a new family in the end

This is so cool. Years ago I received a call for an abandoned gosling. No problem, had a pond with two families in it. I carried her to the edge of the pond and both families were interested. I let her make the decision which family she wanted. She swam over to the larger family, and she was accepted immediately. Everyone was happy, and safe!

Had to watch this to the end as I’ve also watched a tiny lost gosling searching for a mumma and it is heart-wrenching hearing their little cries. Thank you for telling us up front that it had a happy ending, I’m not sure I’d have been able to watch otherwise. Always good to have the number of your local wildlife rescue place handy, just in case of a less-than-happy ending.

Aww love this, thanks for sharing! I found two little lost or orphaned Canada goslings on my bike ride this morning. They were at a busy park in my city and kept waddling toward a parking lot. I tried calling a wildlife rescue for help, but they couldn't really do anything, so I stuck around and tried to redirect them to the river. After about 40 minutes, I got one gosling down to the river by sort of herding and talking softly to him/her to try not to frighten it, then went back for the second one who scurried into a bush when I came close to them. A couple of people stopped to help me with the second gosling, and together we herded it down toward the river too. Both the little goslings joined an adult Canada goose and we all watched them follow the adult for a while. I cycled back around and spotted them again all together and felt so relieved and happy!!

I just found your video and I have a pond last year I had 17 Geese born here one couple only had one baby and it died they then took over a couple of another pair who had 7 goslings.. it all worked out... thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this. It's a great thing it found an adoptive family! Geese families seem to be like that when it comes time to help a lost gosling. I've seen parents take in other goslings that were half the size of their own goslings.

THANK YOU so much for sharing and caring about what was to become of this baby! Last year I started really watching the familys of geese that were in my neighborhood pond. And started to get interested in watching their behaviors and researching how they do certain things. But then, of course, soon realized that in nature that with the good, comes the bad! Like the gosling that was swimming in the pond while its Mom & Dad and siblings looked on from land. I was wondering why it was not with the rest. Then it happened! It started spinning around and around. I thought "what in the world!?" I started to think maybe its was being attacked by a fish! Its parents just ignored it! I started freaking out and told my daughter to "jump in and save it!" LOL! It was hard for me but I had to move on with my life. But when i researched this behavior, i learned that it probably was sick with disease. I went back the next day and sure enough its lifeless body was floating in the water. Very sad, but i know how nature works and sometimes its just cruel. However i still enjoy watching these families with their baby's, it warms my heart and so did your video! Thank you!

I think I know why geese accept other goslings to their gosling group. It's because it increases the chances of survival for her other goslings. For example, if some of the goslings are picked off by predators, there's now a 1/5 chance the predator will eat the orphan gosling, rather than her own goslings, thus increasing her own goslings survival chances by 20%

THANK YOU for telling me the ending so I wouldn't worry about when it was approached by various "encouragements" it received from various adults who approach it and then some even pecked at her. I think I might have given in and grabbed her, tho I'm not sure how to feed her (or make sure she eats), or if I'd have had enuf energy to search out a family with little goslings. I admire the amount of time you spent watching over "her" to make sure she not only FOUND a family, but was ACCEPTED and the her new parents actually called for her when she lagged behind! In my son's place the Geese pairs most of the time the mamma goose lay her eggs there because it's secured and gated.. especially for them, saw everyday, I saw them with their little gosling and lots of ducks too❤😊😊😊 with their chick's as well. I'm so delighted just by looking a5 them ❤❤❤
