Not all heroes wear capes. Edna: All heroes should NEVER wear capes.

It’s interesting how one of Edna’s most iconic lines is “I never look back darling, it distracts from the now” and yet she remembers the exact date of death for superheroes her suit designs killed. What’s more, these tragic histories actively informed her decisions for designing new superhero costumes. I guess the real message of Edna was to take from the past what helps the future, but nothing more.

What's funny about this is that the No Capes rule was actually a result of technical limitations at the time. See having things being all flooly like capes or long hair was a MASSIVE pain in the ass to animated. That's why Violet has so little screen time in the first film her long hair part of her character but it meant that her screen time had to be cut to avoid animating her because of her long hair. This is also why she has so much more time in the second film because CGI has some a long way since then and it was a lot easier to animate her hair properly. However, instead of just having it where all the heroes we saw had no capes even though it's an iconic part of the Superhero Genre, Brad Bird decided to play into this idea and came up with the joke that capes got heroes killed for stupid reasons that could actually happen and used that as a Brick Joke for Syndrome's death later in the film when his cape is got in the jet turbine. Of course this meant they had to get around Syndrome's cape which is why we get so many up close shots of him and why he doesn't appear properly until the half way point of the film. Notice that in opening of the film Buddy has only a minute or two of screen time. It's because his cape was something the animators had to work around. Just a fun bit of trivia.

Ironically, cape is what killed Syndrome. Every superheroes died to a cape ain’t so lucky

Once is an isolated incident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern. This woman has FIVE examples.

I never considered this until rewatching this movie a couple weeks ago, but her cape motto isnt just as a designer. She likely blames herself for every single one of these deaths, which is why shes so adamant about no capes. Her earlier designs haunt her

Stratogale’s death really gets me. Such a horrible way to die and she was just a high schooler according to some sources… adds insult to injury that it probably caused the jet turbine to fail entirely and doom the plane to crashing, adding fuel to the anti-superhero movement…

I cant imagine how guilty edna must feel because she designed they're outfits.

As one who works in a factory, I agree with Edna because any loose clothing or long hair can prove hazardous in a work environment and in the superhero business where your environment is to be taken into consideration, for superhero PPE, NO CAPES!

I like how in the lego Incredibles game, Edna actually calls you out for choosing a cape when creating a custom character.

“I never look back darling, it distracts from the now” Although she’s talking about fashion, that pretty much sums up the main theme of the movie. Mr. Incredible was so fixated on his past, trying to relive the glory days, that he was missing out on the joys to be had with his family in the moment. Him wanting to patch his old suit, or design something that felt classic totally exemplifies that. In a way, seems like him accepting the new suit, the one that his whole family now wears, shows his growth and appreciation for being their husband and father, while still acknowledging what makes them special. On the other hand, Syndrome was also fixated on the past, unable to move on from the obsessions and betrayal he felt as a kid. And in the end, it was the cape, a symbol of that past, that ultimately led to his demise.

Man I never realized how many brutal deaths were in Incredibles. You have this scene (btw the girl caught in a Jet turbine was just a teenager), then the scene showing how Syndrome basically committed mass genocide on heroes. Really messed up

I actually respect Edna,she’s a mastermind at what she does,and though she doesn’t show it,she truly cares(in a non romantic way) for Mr. Incredibles safety;even though she’s stated she never “looks back” she probably does so because of the past mistakes she’s made and the suits she’s fabricated for hero’s which resulted in deaths. Honestly, though she’s absolutely hilarious, she’s a very intelligent and very caring woman,hence why she vigorously put Mr incredibles idea of a cape out of discussion,she doesn’t want to see him die.Quite frankly she possibly cares for every hero,it’s why she makes suits!

Love how bob looks at the cape as a fashion choice when he is the hero and Edna sees the cape practically even as the costumer designer. I respect using capes if they help with flying or as a lightweight shield.

I liked that in the graphic novel Watchmen the first Night Owl explained in his in-universe autobiography a similar tale about why he didn’t wear a cape. For those who don’t know, a caped crime-fighter named Dollar Bill tried stopping a bank robbery by rushing through a revolving door, only for his cape to get snagged and delaying him just enough that the robbers had time to shoot him.

Kinda weird that Bob is perfectly fine dismissing the deaths of his friends for the sake of a flowing piece of fabric. Even really gruesome ones like being sucked into a jet engine.

This was a good movie. It really helped sell the whole no capes thing at the end when syndrome died. I still remember fans anticipating the Incredibles sequel thinking he would come back. I’m like bruh what as a bone fragment? I mean I’d like to see syndrome back as much as everyone else but how do you come back from being pulped? Maybe it’s a decoy or body double apart of the storyline who knows but then that just ruins the original ending. Then again they do that with lots of movies nowadays

Was it lying in quick setting cement, was a street air vent pulling on it, was something ungodly heavy sitting on it?

Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond seems to heed Edna's Advice.

I’m actually surprised how popular she is considering she’s the reason why all these heroes died. You’d think she’d be looked down upon and her costume designs later rejected, yet she’s clearly got enough favoritism in the hero community to literally turn her home into a fortress if need be (referring to the machine gun that popped down from the ceiling, not to mention the laser security when Bob first visited.

If you want a superhero uniform made right, it's best not to argue with Edna. She's a professional who's been doing this for years. She knows exactly what she's talking about.

Fun fact: The original reason superheroes wore capes was to help show movement. They originated in comic books, where everything is just static images, so artists needed as much help as they could get. But in a 3D animated film, where movement is much more clearly visible, we can afford to ditch the capes.

This is an excellent example of foreshadowing for what happens to Syndrome near the end of the movie as he had a cape fully etched into his outfit, as Edna puts it "no capes!"

At one of my old jobs, they held a Halloween party in the warehouse because it was the only place with room for everyone in the office despite the machinery down there. One guy came dressed as superman, cape and all. Ironically, through a series of unfortunate accidents the bailer was turned on and somehow his cape was caught inside... before anyone could react he was pulled inside and crushed. No capes indeed!

Mr Incredible: Why not make it a tear away? Like they do for TV show outfits. You can have the style and if it gets caught it'll just tear off. Unless it has a a function aside from being an decorative accessory, a free flowing cape is More trouble than it's worth.

I'd like to offer a rebuttal: Proper cape design should include the cape being able to detach from the outfit at any given time, to prevent such tragedies.

The saddest part of this for me is how she says Thunderhead was “good with kids” That tells me that he wasn’t just a customer to her.

I just realized that because of Syndrome at the end of the film we have somewhat confirmation that Stratagale was probably not the only one who didn’t make it out alive of that particular situation…

I love that this film takes place in the late 50s/early 60s, it really plays into the whole No To Supers idea really well, as well as just having the 50s/60s aesthetic.

Stratogale was by far the most gruesome death out of any of the others. Well, there's Syndrome who died practically the same way, but I'm talking about the others.

i just rewatched the movie and all the supers that died through costume malfunction were actually present AT bob par/ mr incredible and helen par/ elastigirls wedding minus splashdown

Funny to think how these Heroes could propel themselves forward with flight powers, but they can't stop themselves from being pulled backwards by a piece of cloth tangled in something

I never realised how Splashdown actually died when first seeing this movie, but then I realised it was because he was being choked from that vortex. Pretty awful way to die

I remember watching an interview on this website were Chris Hemsworth was talking about how, when playing Thor, he kept tripping up on his cape and the interviewer quoted this scene. When I told my dad what Chris Hemsworth said, he quoted the scene as well. I think this scene got some things about superheroes right.

Imagine being DynaGuy and flying off while you're cape was snagged to the ground, the force couldnt rip the cape or even jimmy it free and you're neck snapped.... I guess the fabric Edna uses is way too strong for its own good?

Ironically, Dynaguy, the superhero Mr. Incredible wanted a cape inspired by, was one of the people killed by his cape.

Edna definitely designed Bruce and Terry's suit for "Batman Beyond."

If I recall correctly, according to the superhero databank or whatever it was called on the second disc of the DVD, Splashdown was never actually confirmed to be dead. Instead he was listed as Missing In Action with the reason listed as possible suit malfunction.

Edna behaving like a true designer. Analysing modes of failure and removing detrimental elements at the same time that conjugates her client's needs and wants with technological and aesthetical principles.

To think this would foreshadow syndrome's death. This movie has such a perfect script.

You know it's funny that she said no capes because if you look superheroes, and vigilantes who wear capes; they often get it snagged on something.

I'd have loved to watch a "discussion" between her and Batman on capes.

I remember reading a theory that Edna was the one who designed Syndrome’s custom, and purposefully added a cape to his custom when she realized he was evil.

Edna has every single one of these incidents noted down to the dates and place. Don’t mess with her 💀

The second death looks like something that could happen in The Boys 😂

Imagine if Edna met other heroes that use capes. Batman, Dr. Strange, Superman, Spawn and so forth. She would of course be upset seeing them using capes, but would she be interested knowing that some of them have functioning capes? Like how Batman's cape doubles as a paraglider, which allows him to gently fall down much slower, as well as being used for melee purposes and fear tactics. Or Spawn's cape can be used as a weapon that can ensnare his enemies or store his weapons like chains and guns. Or Dr. Strange's cape grants him levitation and is sentient.

Superman's invulnerability keeps him alive. Batman can weaponize his capes...and can confuse his enemies trying to shoot or stab him.

She's 100% though. In their line of work a big flag on your back in stupid, unless it glided or something.

Edna probably made capes in the past since, but pretty much every superhero died from cape mishaps. She was pretty prepared to shut down the cape idea because she had likely cape requests to the point of having to put her foot down to prevent cape deaths. That's why she refuses to make them even when asked.

In the wedding scene, you can see all of those supers sitting next to each other. The Incredibles was a very dark movie with a high body count, the direct opposite being The Incredibles 2.
