The insane asylum located in Independence, Iowa, was the second such facility built in the state. Originally opened all the way back in 1873 as "The Independence Lunatic Asylum," the facility continues to remain in operation today, and the majority of its grounds are still being utilized in the modern-day care of the state's most complex and most severe mentally ill citizens. Housing just under 1,800 patients at its height in the 1930s and 1940s, today the facility is known as "The Independence Mental Health Institute," and it remains one of the state's two still existing publically funded mental health facilities.
