The insane asylum located in Independence, Iowa, was the second such facility built in the state. Originally opened all the way back in 1873 as "The Independence Lunatic Asylum," the facility continues to remain in operation today, and the majority of its grounds are still being utilized in the modern-day care of the state's most complex and most severe mentally ill citizens. Housing just under 1,800 patients at its height in the 1930s and 1940s, today the facility is known as "The Independence Mental Health Institute," and it remains one of the state's two still existing publically funded mental health facilities.
This video has been produced by the mentally ill, for the mentally ill, and for all others who might have any type of interest within them.
It is strictly a not-for-profit production.
Thank you for both watching and sharing it.

Hello sir. I really do appreciate and enjoy these videos. I happened to stumble on this channel by chance while doing research on the State run facilities in my home state of Delaware. We have four State run hospitals still running here. One psychiatric hospitals one hospitals for the intellectualy disabled and two state run long term nursing homes. One for the general population and one for the stats military vets. Thank you for remembering the history of these places

Thank you so much for having watched this video and for having taken the time to comment upon it, as both of these things mean more to me than you might realize. And whenever it comes to the mentally ill and the mentally disabled, such looks back at yesterday do tend to be both illuminating and fascinating...simply because there is so much history behind today's efforts and struggles that our society has been allowed to so completely forget. When we remember these things, we become better, more capable people regarding the work that still needs to be done toward tending to today's mentally ill and mentally disabled. And whenever we allow ourselves to learn from this history, we enable ourselves to tend to them better today than we ever have before, too.

Thank you so much for having watched this video and for having taken the time to comment upon it. When it comes to mental illness and mental health care, we're all on a journey together in putting the lessons of yesterday toward a better today and a more successful tomorrow. And by working together and walking in step alongside one another, we'll all be able to accomplish the many needed goals that we could never achieve alone.

So many thoughts ran through my head watching this. I've worked in an institution, a psychiatric hospital, and now group home. All State or state-funded (I live in Michigan).

Thank you so much for having watched this video, for having taken the time to comment upon it, and for having shared your own personal history in doing so. I've had to be committed to multiple institutions over the years before they finally found a medicinal cocktail that allows me to achieve a workable equilibrium between my own symptoms and circumstances, so many of the thoughts that might run through your mind in watching these videos runs through my own mind, as well. When it comes to mental illness and mental healthcare, not only are we all on a journey together, but we walk the tallest when we walk together.
