Today I'm going to explain the Basics of Fly Fishing an Indicator. One of the most common questions I get is, "what type of indicator do you use"? The answer to that question is, "I use a variety"! It comes down to the situation, type of water and the weather conditions. In this video, I'll share my 3 favorite types of strike indicators, when, where and why I choose them. It's also super important to carry a variety with you so you can switch as needed...this is the secret to fishing an indicator effectively. There isn't one strike indicator that will cover you for every situation.

Thanks Drew! I’ve been just transitioning to yarn indicators to add to my tool kit of nymphing techniques after only euro-nymphing for around 20 years living in Italy. I’ve been making my own New Zealand style indicators for a couple of years and loving them. But yours may prove even easier, more versatile and effective with very light tippets of 6X & 7X where there’s lots of fishing pressure. Thanks for sharing this, and you may have just improved my game here. I’m the only one I know using this type of system where it is frowned upon. But, I’m an opportunist!

Went on a guided trip to Georgia and the guide set me up with the thingamabobber and double nymph rig. He called the cast a "Chuck an Duck"...Caught some nice fish in fairly fast water. Euro nymphing in slow water with a Sighter setup is what I am working on now...Catching fish so...Thanks for sharing you knowledge and the great waters you visit...

Love the newer Air locks. They're my go-to for my 5wt. But most rigs under that need yarn, foam, a foam dry-drop. I'm still a amateur so great video! My favourite thing so far is chasing spring creek wild and native trout!

Yes tried them an very nice. Still have so many older style air locks hard to buy new ones!

Hey Drew look at the new AirLock foam Indicators. I am in love! The old ones were good but in comparison to the new, are much softer landing and more buoyant for the size. Also the foam ones don’t fill with water, which after guiding 2 days a week for a month are inevitable to. Cheers. Love the videos.

Hey Drew. Have you tried the New Zealand indicator system? It's basically the same as the Dorsey, but uses a small piece of tubing instead of the rubber band.
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
No, heard about that system first but seemed pricey. So I tried the dorsey, since it's pretty similar but half the cost and doesn't require any tools!

Dorseys seems to screw up my leader . I'll stick with the new Zealand

what set up do you recommend for lake fishing for panfish? i am used to fishing reds in the flats, not great at it, but wanna fly fish for pans around home. thank you for your time.

I play around with all of them. Yarn lands lightly and is very sensitive but sometimes my hook gets caught in the yarn and tangles Foam lands lightly and rarely tangles with my rig but it’s not adjustable Airlock is heavy and clumsy and sometimes my rig gets looped and tangled around it. And I usually drop the little plastic nut. Lol
@LooknFishy

Yep, gotta have a variety to cover all the situations!

Drew curious about net selection ,I do wade a few streams where 24 inches can be found and I wanted a net you could wade with but also use for support when water is up.. the bum knee doesn't stop me but it does hinder me...any thoughts appreciated
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
I have a rising stubby lunker net I use for the white or other waters where big fish live. The handle is metal and I've used it as a wading staff and rattlesnake finder on trails. The handle is between a boat net and short net so a good mix for me. I'd give it a look....it's the green one in my videos!

Is it reasonable to use heavy indicator on mid-flex action 6 wt fly rod? Will it cast properly?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
The short answer is probably, depends on how heavy the rig. It will get slower the more weight you add on. Imo, I'd want a med fast or fast rod...I use a 9.5ft 6wt clearwater for heavy nymph rigs, deep nymphing, sinking lines/streamers and casting in wind.

I draw the line at using a fly rod to pitch a one inch plastic ball... might as well just use a spinning rod and a worm, lol.

Haha, I hear ya...I definitely enjoy all types of fishing. Imo, drawing lines on style, technique, salt/fresh, trout/not trout...is like only drinking a beer on the weekends. Life's way to short to place those restrictions on myself lol!
