Welcome back onboard the Naughty Lass, my 35 year old narrowboat home, cranking it along the main line of the Aire and Calder navigation from Leeds to Knottingley. Enjoy!
All music made by me, except one track by The Wrong-Oh-Bong-Oh Banned (Mike, Luke, Adam and Me) and another feat. John Avery.
Filmed on an iPhone 6, edited using iMovie.
Pub of the Week
Not featured - but The Packet of Steam in Knottingley is a must!
If you'd like to join the 'Crank It Crew', get a special shoutout on the video, see the vlogs before anyone else, receive patron-only updates or simply just want to encourage me to make more videos, you can do so via my Patreon page -

Alternatively if you just want to show your appreciation and buy me a beer that would also be very much appreciated! I now have a Paypal tip jar if you feel inclined:
paypal.me/crankit
You won't find any adverts on my videos, but I am trying to save up for better equipment (not to mention the huge overheads that come with the essential Pub of the Week segment) so every little helps! Hang on that's an advert isn't it...
Thanks for your support 8^}

Coming the other way into an empty lock is quite frightening . The sheer size is quite astonishing even compared to the other locks on this navigation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. The open stretches especially relaxing, helped along by the music tract. As an author I find that the first draft is pure joy that doesn’t become work until the editing followed by more and more editing. So I can well imagine how much ends up on your cutting room floor.

Still wading through your videos (no pun intended). When working single-handed I'd tend to wear a buoyancy aid when working locks - you only have to slip and hit your head and you're a goner, no matter how good a swimmer you are.

Loved that! ...especially at 1:18. When I was small, I lived near Woodlesford lock (50 years ago!) Used to visit Mr and Mrs Grubb who worked the lock + lived in the Lock-keeper's house built (when the canal was cut) over the sluice on the north side. Massive Cawoods' full coal barges and Tom Puddins used to run east to Goole and the empties returned west, high out of the water... the towpath west of Woodlesford was completely broken down and great lengths of it were marshy wet lands back then but great for damming! Keep cranking Rob! :)
@ChrisBrummitt

Cawoods coal yards and staithes were roughly where the Armouries is now... a real rough and grimy area back then.

The locks are quite big here as ocean going ships used to come up to Leeds then transfer cargo into the trans shipment warehouses in Leeds then by narrow boat up the Leeds and Liverpool to the Pennine towns Also when you travelled from Kirkstall into Leeds city centre you would have passed Armley canal road This area was known by the old locals as Bottany Bay because it was ware the prisoners from Armley prison was loaded onto narrow boats known as Fly boats and take to Liverpool and put on large ships to go to the penal collonies Just thought ide mention many thanks Robbie love your vids

Nice to see you off on your travels again Robbie! I've done some of those locks. You want to be glad they've stopped taking coal to the power station, when I did that route quite a few years ago, the commercial barge taking coal to the power station filled those locks! It gave me quite a fright the first time I spotted one heading towards me!
@johnbrookes2196
@johnbrookes2196 7 лет назад
Robbie loved that cruise thanks. Those buildings on the locks you went through, are they to operate the locks in the busy periods by CRT. Looked like some sort of control building.
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 7 лет назад
You're welcome John 8^) Yes I should have said - they weren't manned as I passed but until last year they would have been used more offen by the C&RT to aid commercial traffic (ie all the coal that was used for the power stations)

Robbie, great video! I love all your vids. If you're ever in Seattle, please visit our locks www.myballard.com/ballard-locks-seattle/. We don't have narrowboats, just a lot of sailboats that that traverse the brackish Puget Sound and the fresh water of Lake Washington. In late summer you can watch salmon swimming upstream to spawn along the salmon ladders. Cheers!

@RobbieCumming 7 лет назад
Hi Esther! It's funny you mention Seattle's locks - right now I'm in North Yorkshire on the river Ouse, in a very similar location to the one you describe - salmon included - and from looking at the website it looks very familiar (albeit on a larger scale!!!) My dream is to travel the world with this vlog, trying out boats in different countries so Seattle is now on my list! Thank you!

Ah I get you now - yes a Weir is normally made up of a row of rocks or concrete as you can see in subsequent footage at Castleford and so unsuiatble for any type of boat to cross it. Much more detail on weirs here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weir Cheers!

I must say Castleford to ferry bridge was my least favourite part of this entire navigation ,utterly grim and featureless and travelling the opposite direction against a moderate current was extremely slow.
