Apart from the Unholy Trinity tour, this is the only time I have ever given the same speech more than once. This one was at Zetiticon in Fargo North Dakota. I repeated this speech for the East Texas Freethought festival two weeks later. The only reason I did was that I was booked every weekend that month, along with everything else we were doing then, and there simply wasn't time to compose two unique presentations that close together.

Which in turn posits the notion that murder is negotiable period, as the major source of "here is a clearly defined objective definition of murder that includes abortion, euthanasia, etc." is religions, so this raises a challenge to the very idea of objective absolute one-size-fits-all morality that doesn't change with the times, people, and circumstances.

You don't know much about the reformation, do you? Martin Luther was a monster - often called the "spiritual step-father of Hitler" and deservedly so. He didn't give a squat about freedom. He wanted to form his OWN state religion, and allied with the nobles against peasants fighting for freedom - or at least a better lot in life. After preaching about the "Freedom of the Christian" - "A Christian is a free lord over all things, and subject to none." Luther seems to have been bought off (or something) by the nobles oppressing the peasants and betrays them brutally and sides with the oppressors. With his text “Against the Robbing Murderous Hordes of Peasants”, he urges the princes to take ruthless retaliation. “They must be sliced, choked, stabbed, secretly and publicly, by those who can, like one must kill a rabid dog.” Luther chooses to apply the “freedom of a Christian” to the spiritual only. He was a disgusting madman, and the ONLY thing he got right was that people should be allowed to have Bibles in their own language.

@ The Pope's utter self-indulgence and the lying ways he used to raise money for it, started the need for the Reformation. There was very good reason and logic behind Martin Luther's published objections. Not that he didn't still have some of the "holy" errors still clinging to him. The Inquisition was entirely the fault of the intolerance of the Church of Rome, and there are even still Protestants, even in this USA, a child of the Enlightenment, who still walk in the Darkness of believing the Flat Earth tales of Genesis. You can blamelessly believe in a Flood if the Earth is flat or tray-shaped, and not too big. But people who know it's a planet, and a lot larger than Mesopotamia even with Egypt added, and still imagine a world wide flood covering the Blue Ridge mountains, you have to be really stupid.

Societies of "honor killings" need to tweak things a little. Let that man marry the 10 year old girl. The second he says his vows, execute him and let the girl inherit all of his property. Her "honor" is restored and she becomes a wealthy, respectable widow and the trash gets taken out.

Kristen Ungstad Sharia inheritance law is very different, a widow inherits only a small percentage. Most goes to male family members. Sons get twice as much as daughters.

In the 80s,there were evolution chapters in our earth science textbooks as early as middle school, but they were avoided. I didn't get a solid coverage on evolution until I took a high school senior elective class on archaeology.

"any government official who cites his/her personal religious beliefs as sole justification for public policy shall be immediately removed from office and forever barred from government service."

Slight nitpick: it wouldn't be an amendment to an amendment, but just another amendment to the constitution. See Prohibition for an example of that.

A Texan I met said it best. "Learn the rules to make them work for you". I took this to mean that lazy thinking means that religious rules are best. They require little work and can be changed any time to mean anything. On the other hand science requires some real work but benifits everyone. Also science doesn't allow for the kind of manipulation that religious leaders engage.

I came from a fundy Texas Christian home who home schooled. I was given a textbook, homework, and a laptop to discover information with. The freethinking approach to my schooling is why I abandoned faith and found the wonders of scientific exploration. I always say homeschooling is good... when done like that and for the right kind of kids who enjoy that style of learning.

The first time I ever read Genesis was in college. The good news is that it was in my Folklore and Fantasy class where we were going over creation myths. It was a creative writing-type class. I remember while I read thinking, "that's wrong, that's the wrong order, that *could* be right if you interpreted it a certain way...that doesn't make sense...wait, is the snake the good guy here?" That was what went in my head when I read the story of Adam and Eve.

By now it's 2021, and I'm writing this from the other side of the Atlantic. Here and now, the battles fought over in 'merica seem so unreal, I find it hard to even express it. I live in one of the most 'Catholic' countries of the EU, Spain (as an immigrant from Germany). This is a country where students in pre-university education can pick Religious Education as an optional subject, being given the choice between Catholic Religion and Catholic Religion, or an alternative nobody takes seriously. I myself, back in Germany loads of years ago (I'm 42 now), took RE because it was really cool to get top marks for continuously questioning the teacher's beliefs and learning stuff that was really useful for the real subjects, such as Literature and History. As for the latter, I'm talking about the motivations of the crusaders and suchlike. Even back then, and in the experience of my Spanish partner, the sh***t peddled by American conservatives today would have seemed 17th-century. A high school teacher and second-generation atheist myself, some of the colleagues I've come to like best have been RE teachers. Most or all of the RE teachers I've known have been well-versed in the Satanic Bible and the Quran, and they've always accepted my Satanic Blessing (sure, knowing I've adopted it to make fun of Christian-inspired idioms common in Spain). None of them has ever questioned evolution, and those of them I questioned about Creationism/ID have all seemed somewhat embarrassed about their supposed coreligionists. Here in Europe, most of those who still believe in a God (Jews and Christians at least, and quite a few Muslims) think that their god of choice saved himself a bit of work by setting up the laws of evolution and letting it play out. Plus, almost everyone here thinks that if there is a god he spoke in riddles, and you basically go with the set of riddles that for one reason or another chimes best with your cultural and personal identity. Believers might not express it that way, but it's the underlying principle. That principle has two names: secularism and religious freedom. It hurts me to see the country where it first made its way into the Constitution slide back into a theocracy. It fills me with fear that the one-time beacon of liberty and progress should be turning into a byword, a symbol of regression, irrationality, oppression. That it should become the laughing stock of the world, that it should be morphing into a Gideon. Keep up the fight, Aron, and all you others who fight on the same side, who fight ignorance and theocratic fascism. In the end we will win, and by spreading the word of reason we still may do so before the world is changed beyond recognition by folks who think that Bronze Age fairy tales are all you need to know, or who exploit such beliefs for their own ends.

As an American, it's painful to see religion's choke hold on this country and it's vile attempted strangulation of scientific facts. It shows. For example, it's almost impossible to go into a clinic/hospital that's 100% staffed with Americans due to the fact that hospitals tend to hire top-notch proven professionals and many come from the developed European/Eastern countries because they have much higher standards for discipline, education, and commitment in general, and this starts young. In America too many families get away with atrocities by claiming "religious grounds" to homeschool (which is usually a disaster) or refuse blood transfusions or the twisted "Quiver Full" movement, transparent cop-outs for insecure, uneducated people who use god as an excuse, and get away with it because even more alarming, it has it's poison tentacles in some lawmakers who will do anything to get votes. Texas is proof. Abstinence only is taught because pre-marital sex isn't godly, and birth control is evil while that state has the highest percentage of teen pregnancies, and worse, repeat teen pregnancies which does nothing to raise the bar on education and a secure future. But it keeps the tax payers coming. This country is getting worse and religion has a big part of it.

Your quote of "freedom of religion, requires freedom from religion" was a meaningful and important concept. I haven't been religious since middle school (20 years ago), I renounced god early in life and suffered for it socially. I was considered a devil worshiper because I did not believe in Christianity in a small Christian community. However I am not the victim, and its bullshit to play that card. The uneducated are the victims, those who do not understand the basics of the scientific method. Those who are convinced that evolution is some kind of religion. If transparency were the religion, none of this would even be necessary...

Vote for the one who you suspect of lying about that. An atheist could not get elected in the USA in most areas. Of course, both politicians are lying about their faith; one party seems to be more keen than the other one about letting the priests rule though. Just a thought, for an old comment.

Aron, going to school in East Tennesse, I was taught all the crackpot theories you mentioned around the 18:50 mark in school by science and social studies teachers at various times. It was only because I had other teachers, in those same subjects, who taught the truth, and my later desire to learn the truth for myself, when I was near thirty, that I ever figured out they were wrong. BTW, all the "science" and "social studies" teachers who taught the crackpot stuff happened to also be coaches on the various school athletic teams, who had no education in the subjects that they taught, but were given the job to do so, only so that they would be on hand to coach the sports teams.

I'm from Missouri and yeah...I'm embarrased because of this stuff in our state. I had a high school science teacher who taught us that a meteor didn't kill the dinosaurs. She also gave bible study lessons to a student. However, she was reasonable, and I convinced her that a meteor really did kill the dinosaurs when I showed her the picture of the crater in Mexico. Also, the bible lessons weren't during school time. Still, a bit weird.

It was an anti-Communist measure that made some sense for the time in which it was implemented, the height of the Cold War, and the reasoning carried over into the War on Islamic Terror to a point, although the Islamoterrorists were made into the shape they were in the first place by anti-Communist measures thinking that "they're Abrahamist religious Patriarchies, and therefore perfect allies against the godless Commies!", and we see how that turned out in the end...

Let's teach the congregation about all the contradictions and immorality of stories found in their mythology. Condoning mass murder, slavery, rape and incest not to mention the death penalty for working on the Sabbath are all in their scripture! Let's teach ALL of that!

This really aged well, It might be worth the effort to revisit this video and compare it to where we're at now in 2022. Clearly Trumpism may have nearly doubled those numbers of unreasonable people in office as well as citizens.
