After many more tests and measurements, I have come to the conclusion that I have to upgrade the inverter to one with a proper N to PE link. I read you comments on the Tesla charging video and looked at some options. The Victron path seems to be the best at the moment as it integrates with my existing gear.
I also cannot recommend these solar-charge-inverters-hybrid-solutions enough! They are great devices and ideal for beginners as they have all necessary components already included. Hook up your solar and battery, program the settings and you're ready to go.

The comparison in temperature between the MPPT and inverter is not entirely valid: The MPPT uses it's metal case as a heat sink while the inverter has fans to eject and remove the heat. Try blocking off the fans of the inverter and *then* see how hot it gets. :) Remember that the heat from the MPPT causes the metal case to heat up, while the inverter is ejecting it's heat via fans by blowing the heat out. That's why checking the temperature of the inverter won't predict how hot it'll make your cabinet: It's fans are moving the heat from inside the inverter to the air outside the inverter. From a BTU perspective the inverter is creating way more heat: It's just pushing that heat out rather than letting it build up and cause a temperature increase. Block off those vents and then see what happens. When you mount that MPPT to your metal cabinet that metal cabinet itself will become part of the heat sink for the MPPT, which means it'll shed it's heat directly to the outside via the metal walls of your cabinet. Where-as the inverter is blowing that heat into the interior of the metal enclosure via it's fans which will trap that hot air inside. My motorhome's basement is way bigger than that metal cabinet you have, and they seriously heat it up. A lot. Easily exceeding 40 C and I've had it get as high at 50 C. I would definitely keep the inverter outside the cabinet.

All too true - to get a reasonable constant output on hot days I had to stop using the small builtin charger on my Multiplus II 48/3k as the extra heat even from only 2000W of PVin pulled the constant output capability to only 1700W on hot days (~40C ambient in metal shed on 36C day).

@@PeterMilanovski I have not started yet due some medical problems, but I believe that the system will allow you to program how you want to run it. Grid is attached along with you other sources of power. Then you program it to use battery power as your main source. Solar will charge when available, but when the batteries get low, it will start using grid with no transfer switch. The system will charge your batteries and keep your needs going. Very Smart.

You could bought an MPP Solar 5kW inverter for that price. And you could DC couple them with the Victron MPPT. So Victron charges the battery and the MPP Solar discharges it. Also extra MPPT in it for a new solar string ... for new solar panels. The cabinet will be to small. Yep it will heat up like an oven. But you can drill 2 hole in the side and put 2 fans there (1th blows in, 2nd blows out). To protect the inside from bugs use mosquito net (folded, or 2-3 layer). There are some very strong mosquito nets that can withstand the constant hot airflow. Cheap solution.

Love the Victron. I am in the process of rearranging my system with two Magnum inverters. On the sides with vents they need six inch clearance and three inch on the other sides. If you are going to put the voctron in that box you are going to need to cut a vent in the side and probably the top. Ideally you would also have an intake and output fans. I know it doesn’t feel good to have layout plans change but I needed up changing all of my plans because of that exact issue. Even if the inverter doesn’t burn out it does reduce efficiency.

Ground wire needs to be 4awg if exposed. If protected(strapped to or inside conduit) it can be much smaller. But you also should have weeb washers between panels and rails and on lugs that ground to the rail. Sometimes the code goes a little crazy here, but for high voltage systems I can see how that would be better.

Wow! big upgrade! well done mate. The victron gear is top notch. I have the same charge controller as you, the older model but same capacity 48V inverter, the smart shunt, and 12V 1000W victron. I'm building a 12V test system before I go the whole hog and put together a 48V system in a rack cabinet. If you want a monitoring station, set up a raspberry pi and make your own monitoring system. For grounding use one size less then the normal cables. In Most cases that’s ok. So if your solar array works with 6mm2 ... 4mm2 should be fine. Make sure your new victron device will have enough space around itself ... it dont needs exactly 10cm ! I install these units in much tighter spaces and everything works good but keep this place ventilated with some temperature-controlled fans. That’s easy to do for you.

Those all in one thing's, you really need to look closely at what all the components inside are! There's many different models available and they all offer something different. How do I know? I have one sitting on my bench which blew up, apparently they don't like having the battery disconnected while the solar panels are connected and providing power! The one that I have is the 12V battery version which also needs 12V solar panels, it can accept 24V panels but the charge controller module is PWM and it doesn't make use of the higher input voltage! The inverter on mine is only 800W which was plenty when I got it to run a file server in the garage but I have since upgraded to a blade server which used to run a hospital here in Melbourne and the inverter just doesn't have the capacity to support it. Also I should mention that the PWM Charge controller module is really slow to respond especially during changing weather conditions, clouds passing overhead cause it to ramp down while it thinks about what it wants to do, then when it finally decided to ramp up, another cloud comes over and we are back to thinking about it!!! It's really annoying! I have since switched over to cheap eBay $10Au MPPT charge Controllers which are rated for 100W for each 12V battery bank so for a 48V string I'm using 4 of them, one each for each 12v bank, that's a total of 400W, they can be paralleled for more current but they are incredibly fast to react! Even without direct sunlight, as soon as it lights up first thing in the morning, they are already begining to work till the last bit of light late in the afternoon! Seriously impressive performance! I can't speak for all of the other all in one models but I wouldn't recommend my one! As you mentioned it can switch from solar to battery to grid AC input which can also Charge the battery with the built in battery charger! There's also a connection to activate a standby generator as well! But for me, I don't want to use the grid or a generator either, the idea of it is great but it's slow, oh and if you introduce an extra load on the battery, like a 12v light for example, the solar charging stops so it can think about what just happened and the same thing happens when you turn off the light... Really annoying 😲... It's fan's sound like a F11 fighter jet is hiding in my garage to.. I hope that this helps 😊

@PeterMilanovski 3 года назад
@@henvan8737 have you ever watched it to see how it behaves as clouds pass overhead? I don't remember the model of mine but it's the 12v 800w inverter version! It was the cheapest at the time when purchased but now I see that more powerful models are available for the same price I paid for mine. The issue I have found with mine is that it tends to do a lot of thinking about what it wants to do when either clouds pass overhead or if any extra load is placed on the battery for example a 12v light! It seems to be able to sense that something has been connected to the battery and stop's charging to work out what it wants to do about it... It also does the same thing when the extra load is disconnected! So basically if you wanted to also power something else directly off the battery like a 12v water pump to feed tank water to the toilet, it just can't be done with my one! A standalone charge controller doesn't suffer from this problem! I wanted to convert all the lights in my Melbourne house to 12v DC and get it directly from the battery and save the inverter for the thing's that need 240v AC but it's not going to happen with my setup! I'm charging my Lifepo4 Batteries with eBay MPPT charge Controllers which are just PCB boards and they are, so far, doing an amazing job 👍, now I want to get a separate inverter with at least 3kw output to drive the fridge. I have to look into an electric stove and an electric water heater for their power consumption figures to make sure that I get the right inverter or inverters to cover everything... If anything, the electric hot water boiler can always be converted to low voltage as there are various heater elements available for them. As for the air-conditioning, I recently learned that 24v aircon compressors are available from the US and can be used to convert normal house type air-conditioning units... Litterely convert the whole house to Electric! Without the need for a grid tie connection! If you are planning on charging a car, you might need another 1.5kw of panels on top of what you already have, unless you already have plenty of spare energy with what you have! The batteries that I'm using are actually intended for use in a UPS so they are those SLA 7Ah type battery cases but have Lifepo4 Batteries inside instead, they have a BMS inside them so they are well protected, they are super light weight, easy to connect and cheap to purchase when I need more capacity, in a 48v series string, 4 of them are a lot less money than 4 of much larger capacity batteries! They only hold 8Ah but I can afford to purchase 4 at a time every two weeks, and with multiple smaller batteries, they share the current when charging or discharging and that extends their lifespan, I'm at a point where I can't fully discharge them, a few more string's and I will only be able to get them to 50% discharge... They should last a very long time! That's the way to go with batteries...

@@danfitzpatrick4112 nice 👍 I have the 12v DC version which has the 800W inverter. I got it almost 3 years ago but I have this issue with it not liking it when I put another 12v load on the battery! I have a water pump that feed's tank water to the toilet and it operates automatically via a built in pressure switch in the pump, every time I flush the toilet, the solar charger stops charging to have a think about what just happened to the battery, then eventually starts to ramp up the charge again, and it does the same thing again when the pump stop's... Meanwhile the sun is shining! And it's not doing anything! I find this annoying! I'm sure that they have good intentions behind why it does this but I, for the life of me can't think why? I hope that this has been sorted out in the newer versions, they are pretty good and I wouldn't mind getting a new and more powerful than the 800W which I have outgrown now! But if I can't use the battery directly for other things like lights and pumps, then I'm just going to have to use something else instead... I have yet to speak to someone who has one installed and working! All that it would take to test is to connect a load, even a light bulb directly to the battery while it's being charged from solar and see if the fan's stop spinning! The wattage for solar input on the display screen should also show that the wattage has dropped out, it waits for 30 seconds to a minute and then starts ramping up again... Who knows? Yours might not do it! Mines probably just an early version?

congrats on the new inverter decision and after $1100 of pocket pain, I hope you get some positives from the imminent Inverter swap. As a Victron ‘victim’, I can’t conceive it an upgrade purchase, rather just as expensive pseudo-bling. You definitely won’t get the performance of this little Xijia 3k unit. I am sure the Pheonix Smart 48/3k will prove too small for your needs, so for now, keep your $300 Xijia just for close circuit car charging and use the new Victron for any general lighter loads. Definitely mount the Pheonix in a well ventilated clear area as it will run very hot at the back with only mediocre (2000W) loads. Unlike the Xijia, in that small cabinet along with the little hot running Victron MPPT unit you will definitely have heat issues on >32C ambient days. Can’t wait to see the Pheonix trying to do >2500W constant for even 1hr - its going to get hot as hell on the back plate. Neutral / "Earth" (ground) bonding exists for GFCI devices. Any current over ground would trip the GFCI, stopping power, that is the primary purpose of the N/G bond. The ground rod, or literal connection to the Earth exists to dissipate static discharge voltage. These are two separate concerns- if you have the N/G bond, even without a grounding rod your GFI will function. Static potential between commonly grounded devices will equalize with eachother.

The lack of a real, separate earth ground is a coomon issue in marine setups, well documented with generators and inverters. The US OSHA has some advice on this, and there is an excellent white paper online for cinematographers and other who usually take gensets into the field, and typically don't pound in ground rods. You are not the first person to have this problem. Tesla is simply following safety standards for *fixed* installations.

Some victron inverters can also charge your batteries cant they? I dont think its an mppt solar charger though i think it mains charges your batteries with a built in transfer switch that does AC passthrough. Usually used in canal boats/rvs that hookup too EHUs occasionally.

with 4mm for ground you should be fine (my PV has also a 4 mm). About the charge controler heating up, I think it was designed to be mounted in the vertical beacause the heat disipation is done at the back. Also, about switching back to the grid when the battery is empty - I'm linking you a YT-video (it's in german) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zr0BXeeuAS4.html where the guy is covering a similar issue (he is covering the blackout situation) - could be interesting for you.

Personally, if you’ve already ordered a new inverter, I would ground the neutral and battery negative and see what happens. You could put, say a 10A fuse in the battery positive just in case but I think it will work fine, be safe and usable for the Tesla. What have you got to lose?
@MrAdolfo2b
@MrAdolfo2b 3 года назад
Yea, that cheap inverter you initially purchased was probably the worst component in your otherwise "quality" system. It wouldn't have made for as many interesting videos BUT an all-in-one (Victron EasySolar-II GX for example) would surely have been the easiest, cheapest, highest quality solution PLUS it features a transfer switch with true ME grounding.

U hawe to join neutral and Earth with tini wire for just keep the neutral referenced to Earth and then u got 230v measuring on fase and Earth , neutral and Earth is zero now

Mount the new inverter to the inside of the door of the enclosure.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 года назад
What difference would that make?
@smde1
@smde1 3 года назад
@@OffGridGarageAustralia By arranging the inverter to be mounted to the door you would be raising it and moving it further from the back edge of the enclosure. This would free up additional space in the enclosure for other components like meters, etc to remain inside the enclosure - I am assuming that having the inverter mounted to the door would basically make the inverter capable of being moved out of the enclosure when the door was opened and would thus leave room in the enclosure for other things as well as make it a bit easier to work on the components inside . Of course, you would need to use additional wiring , etc - so that when the door was opened the inverter could still be connected to everything. Additionally, mounting the inverter to the door would take advantage of the heat dissipation capability of a large thin plate of metal exposed to moving air ......... see comment below :)

@colinbeckitt9495
@colinbeckitt9495 3 года назад
Hi Gerald I would recommend you go for a 48/5000 as the 48/3k runs really hot when using the built-in charger at only 2000W PVin which lowers its constant load output in warm weather. Also the PV in volts are very low (70V I think) which really restricts you panel options. Go for an external 60-80A MPPT charger with sat 150v Pvin capability. I battled with a MultiPlus II 48/3k inverter for 3months before replacing it due to it struggling to output even a constant 2000W on hot days. They are simply over-rated so go bigger to a 48/5000.

@@colinbeckitt9495 Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I agree that based on my needs I would probably go for the larger unit anyhow. @@geraldgrogan Hi Gerald, I first saw the Multiplus II 48/3k at Intersolar 2018 in Munich and bought 1 in Oct 2018 by mid-Jan 2019 I sold it and bought a much better 4000W Power Jack unit for AU$440 on eBay. To be fair, they should be selling the Multiplus II 48/3k unit as a 1700 - 2000W continuous unit if you are using the MPPT at the same time. Victron are very nicely made inverters but I think designed for cooler countries as they just overheat and drop-out constantly during a Australian Summer day. I paid >$1800 for my Multiplus II and I regret ever listening to the BS everyone had hyped the brand up to as they are simply overated and perform poorly. My mate has a Chinese built POWMR MPS-V-5000W-PLUS inverter that cost $765 free delivery, has 80A MPPT charger, 11,000W surge and easily runs 4500W continuously @36C ambient. Victron has a long way to ho before they can compete!
