The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is always the same: 3.14159... and on and on (literally!) forever. This irrational number, pi, has an infinite number of digits, so we'll never figure out its exact value no matter how close we seem to get. Reynaldo Lopes explains pi's vast applications to the study of music, financial models, and even the density of the universe.
Lesson by Reynaldo Lopes, animation by Igor Coric.

The real reason why "only the first forty or so" digits of pi are used is because, while a _perfect_ circle has an irrational circumference length, most actual circular shapes are made of ordinary matter, which is, in turn made of a _finite and rational_ amount of _atoms._ This means that, no matter how long the actual number of the circumference is, it _has_ to be rational because the circle can't get smooth enough to become irrational.

You can eat an infinite number of pieces but those pieces get smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller. So you'll never be able to eat more than 3.2 pies.

According to Vsauce's video called "Supertasks", You can cut and then stack a normal pie infinitly, But every piece will be half of the previous piece, So the pie itself isn't infinite.

@johandh2o
@johandh2o 10 лет назад
***** Pal, I'm sorry but you're wrong. You cannot use percents in this case because you cannot talk about "random picking a rational number in the real number pool". That does not make sense because you're talking about a continuous random variable, not a discrete one. You should know that a continuous random variable has a probability density function, not a probability mass function, and the probability for picking one specific value of a continuous random variable is always zero, no matter the cardinality of the infinite. So, random picking a rational number x in the real pool is zero, the same as random picking a irrational number y. You cannot say that y/x=1, that does not make sence because they're both zero. That's to say, you cannot talk about percents or probability here, but you can talk about the cardinality of the irrationals being greater that the cardinality of the rational. That's it.

The really irrational thing about Pi is that the notion is predicted on their existing somewhere a perfect circle. Most circles themselves do not actually represent Pi, as they are not a seamless line down to an infinitely infinitesimal sub subatomic scale. The closest any circumference anywhere in the universe comes to this is the event horizon of a super massive black hole, and only when it's surface is not disturbed by feeding. So do true circles really exist?

Perfect circles can't exist in our three dimensional world. An untouched supermassive black hole would be a perfect sphere. If we took a picture of it, would it be a perfect circle? Remember that pixels in the photo are squares, so maybe circles don't even exist here.

Considering the amount of work that went into computing pi in the pre-computer days, it is amazing how fast even low-end computers can compute it. My iPad Air 2 has an app that can compute 25,000 digits of pi in less than 1.5 seconds. The app can compute more, up to 500,000 digits, but the length of time required goes up roughly as the square of the number of digits requested.

when i was kid in school my teacher didnt explain what Pi is, they just tell us" its a formula for a circle", and when i ask "why 3,14?" they said "Pi is just how it be, just remember it"

Even though it says in the video that for scientific purposes you only need the first 40 digits or so, i highly doubt anyone has use for more than the first 5. When you calculate something using pi with a computer, it will use 10 or so digits, but you will probably throw away all but the first 4-5 digits from your result anyways.

He means to say that when you need extreme accuracy, you can take the value of pi till 40 decimal place which almost give close practical purpose results in calculations.I know that in high school or even in graduate level courses you don't need that much accuracy in results so you use pi value till 4-5 digits after the decimal .you can compare it with the numericals in high school physics for calculating the mass of proton and neutron in which we take the values like 0.000000000000000000000000000000091 kg in approx while in usual calculation we take such numbers as 0 or 1.or even the planks value is so small but we take it in calculations ,don't we.

***** it's not really the same thing. There a difference between taking into account a number like 5*10^(-20) and a number like 5.0000001*10^(-20). Take a radius of your choice and calculate the circumference using pi to the 5th digit, then using pi to the 20th digit, and see the % error. I am fairly confident it's below 1%.
@CristiNeagu
@CristiNeagu 9 лет назад
***** I just tried it with using pi as 3.14 and pi as 3.141592654. The difference was of 0.051%.

yes you are correct but now think if I was calculating something several light years away that percentage error will offset me by several kilometres.Also at smaller subatomic particle level you may know that even a slightest error results in very big at macroscopic level.so while calculating the values containing pi you take long more accurate values.
@CristiNeagu
@CristiNeagu 9 лет назад
***** I was using just 2 fractional digits. In reality, you would probably use 10-12 digits. Any decent calculator can use that. You can calculate the error you would get by using 10 digits as opposed to 20 digits. And the error is usually calculated in percents. For rough calculations (back of the napkin), 5-10% is acceptable. And for precise calculations, 0.0001% or less is more than acceptable, no matter the scale.

1:13 "So, when did they finally figure out the exact value instead of just estimating? Actually, never." It's clear from the rest of the video that you meant no exact fraction or finite decimal representation, but finding a formula for pi is really finding an exact value, and this was also done in the 14th century.

how can we say that one infinity is greater than another ?
@DreadKyller
@DreadKyller 8 лет назад
+Kabir Pankaj because the universe isn't actually infinite. It has a finite amount of mass, although so stupidly large it's pretty much infinite for all needs. Laws such as the conservation of energy simply wouldn't work if there was infinite mass, because that would imply infinite energy. Now we never know, but someone could theoretically find the next number of pi and find out it ends, irrational numbers can only be proven if it can't be disproved after infinite repetition. No one has found the exact value of pi, however it doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't end somewhere, because theoretically it could all of a sudden just stop having more digits, we're just not there yet.

+DreadKyller The law of conservation of mass doesn't break down, there is a finite amount of mass and an infinite amount of volume to put it in.
@DreadKyller
@DreadKyller 8 лет назад
Dominus Felis your statement makes no sense. There may be infinite volume to put the mass of the universe in, that doesn't affect the law of conservation of mass, no matter where that mass is in the universe it's still that amount of mass, in absolutely no way does the amount of empty space affect the law of conservation of mass. Either way this doesn't matter, the video compared the amount of digits in pi to the amount of mass in the universe, not the size of the space to put it in, so I don't get what your comment is trying to do.

The equation of a circle is x^2+y^2=r^2 it is defined by the radius, ploar, cylindrical and spherical coordinates also use the radius as a way to define the circle, we never really use the diameter to work with circles. Additionaly may physical properties depend on the radius, like gravity it depends on the planet's radius not the diameter.

Because we cannot know for certain the perimeter of a circle, we can only approximate it by drawing short segment of lines along the circle. Our definition of length is the straight distance between point A and B. A curved line can thus be represented by infinitesimal short lines, which if you make the line shorter and shorter, will be more accurate, but you can never pinpoint that actual distance.

***** I'm a bit foggy on the subject, but "more stuff doesn't get added just because it expands." is (if my memory serves and humanity's current understanding of the universe is correct. By the way, both are a tad rare!) false. Dark energy allegedly stays at a constant ratio to the size of the universe. Which is expanding. Thus, dark engergy "stuff" is being added just because it is expanding. If my memory continues to serve (if it ever even did) then dark energy also causes the universe to expand faster, so more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more is always being added!

Tethloach Bol Since when is dark energy actually stuff? It's just an intrinsic property of empty space that causes itself to expand. ***** There is no evidence that there is a finite quantity of matter and energy in the universe. It's still a topic of debate among scientist whether or not the Universe stretches infinitely throughout the spatial dimensions.

i just realized that that was kinda confusing so here is an example 3.14 3.1415 +3.14 +3.1515 ------- ----------- 6.28 6.2830 and the farther you regroup into pi the more you have to regroup before it and therefore for all we know tau could = 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999997889867643256768909999999999.13465798984387896543218899087654309999999098765666666665464555554444444678999998698877722323222121111 or something does this mean the only way to write tau is either using the symbol or writing tau

+Cas Van Veen There are quite a few quantum computers around nowadays. I couldn't find anything wrong with this video. Quantum computers are not readily available to the general public because of programs we are using are decoded in 2 bit information, using a quantum computer would not be any faster (even slower in some cases). The key to using a quantum computer is, they use 2^n (exponential) comparisons instead, which makes them able to carry out many more comparisons quicker with the number of items increasing(increase n, the number gets increasingly larger).
@cas7152
@cas7152 8 лет назад
+snuffles1101 Okay, let me formulate it differently. There are no Quantum Computers as he speaks of. The biggest calculation ever done on a quantum computer is 5 times 3 equals 15 using 5 atoms.
@snuffles1101
@snuffles1101 8 лет назад
*cough* erm, i don't know how else to say it, so, your just plain wrong. I am a student studying computer engineering at the moment, i don't claim to know everything but.... I recommend you look up on wikipedia, quantum algorithms. You've got Shor's algorithm to start with, which is basically integer factorization, yes it might seem like just numbers, but, it lies at the bedrock of programming and the RSA cryptosystem. RSA cyptosystem is a security method using prime numbers to send secure information around to world. Quantum computers offer code cracking, that of which a classical computer cannot due to the sheer size of the prime numbers used for keys to decode the information. Research has come a long way in quantum computing.

+snuffles1101 Hey, I do appreciate that you want to start this discussion with me. But a true Quantum computer is far from being developed. A normal computer uses transistors which may be around 15 atoms wide now a days. Anything smaller than that and the Heisenbergs uncertainty principle takes into effect which causes atoms to leak away due to the heat producer by such a system like a quantum computer that uses single atoms as transistors. Atoms or rather particles, due to the the laws of quantum mechanics, can be in two states at once and they'll behave like that. Up until now, there has been no way known to man how to trap multiple of these atoms and do complex calculations with them. I've been to Utrecht University in The Netherlands and they are researching this fenomenon at the very moment. They are trying to make a piece of Bose-Einstein matter by supercooling it so all the Natrium ions become alligned and are "facing" the same way. Even look at Moores law, which tells the amount of transistors doubles each decade or so, it is slowing down and it has not yet reached the level of what a quantum computer needs. In conclusion, there is no such thing as a quantum computer yet, although I do believe that they could calculate at a much faster rate than silicon computers can. I look forward to your answer, because this has become a very interesting discussion

+Cas Van Veen You are correct about there not being quantum computers able to calculate pi yet. The formula you would need for this was actually just discovered this year (2015) and has not been implemented to any extent. The feat of calculating 2 quadrillion digits actually belongs to a cluster of 1000 classical computers, courtesy of Yahoo's Hadoop cloud. arxiv.org/pdf/1510.07813.pdf www.bbc.com/news/technology-11313194

There is nothing deep about saying that you cannot represent perfect mathematical concepts above the quantum level. Just the fact that things jiggle due to heat and quantum mechanics rule out the possibility of a perfect circle made out of multiple parts. It also rules out having and integer number of anything except particles.

No, a length of "2" does exist, but you don't mean "exists", you mean measuring - that we can only approximate a length but never find out precisely. If we measure 2 or 2.0 or 2.00 we do not know if it is actually 2.00001 etc, you're right. But nevertheless a length of 2.00000*repeating infinitely can logically exist (or plain decimal 2).

Hi TED admins, I would like to propose a quick thought, given Pi is just a number (cant be precised). From my point of view it's just like another numbers, let say number 1. Typing 1 is just a fancy way of telling 0.9999999999999999999999999 to infinite → to think this way lead to conclude that our number system can't describe Pi, then throw it away. This statement generalized Pi not as a special number anymore, it's just our number system flawed. Given another planet alien extraterrestrial using different ratio as their numbering system, also geometry to support that. We will have, instead of Pi, we have "Pie" as triangle resemblance 3.14 of full circle. Also, we have Fibonacci in 5/8 of a circle, the list keeps going on using pure ratio as symbol, base number, rather than 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0. Perhaps just using symbol + volume can mix Trigonometric, Algebra, Arithmetic into new harmonized branch. I'm thinking this way, since we don't invent math, we're just trying to describe our world perspective from a system of agreement symbols.

No, 1 is a natural number, π is an irrational number. 1 means exactly 1, meanwhile π means an approximation of the value of Pi since that's the best you can get.

That doesn't change the fact that we do not know what is outside the observable universe - neither its size nor its mass/energy (and thereby the amount of "stuff").

Pi cannot be expressed as the ration between 2 WHOLE numbers. However, It can be expressed as the ratio between 2 that are not both rational. For example, the ratio between pi and 1 is pi. Therefore, the diameter and the circumference can never be both whole, or rational - at least one of them must be irrational. They might look rational while measuring in real life, but there is no such thing as a perfect circle in real life, and you can never measure something at 100% accuracy.
