How do you improve the lives of one hundred people? One thousand? One hundred thousand? Amy Hanauer’s answer is public policy. Hanauer’s talk at TEDxSHHS is centered around the difference that public policy makes in a community, and how the smallest change in policy can make a large difference. Hanauer highlights how individual action can affect larger issues in a community, and urges you to discover what you can do to influence policy decisions in your neighborhood.
Amy Hanauer is the founding executive director of Policy Matters Ohio, which creates a more vibrant equitable, sustainable and inclusive Ohio through research, media work, coalition building and policy advocacy. By issuing more than 60 reports each year and getting more than 600 news stories about them, Policy Matters improves lives and communities. Its work has helped raise the minimum wage, defend worker rights, establish clean energy standards, and expand Medicaid. Amy has a master’s of Public Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. from Cornell University. Before starting Policy Matters in 2000, she did research and policy work in Wisconsin, Colorado and Washington D.C. Amy is also on the board of directors and the executive committee of the national think tank Dēmos and the steering committee for Emerald Cities Cleveland. Amy now lives in Shaker Heights with her husband, political scientist Mark Cassell, and her children, Max and Katrina.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Policy is not pressed enough in communities. People need to be encouraged to corral their ideas together and I think this speech was glorious! Thank you!

This was a remarkable lecture. As I currently study social sciences and public policy as my major I feel that I could have a profound impact on the lives of people in the future. :) Thanks for giving me hope and encouragement I needed to keep going.

Thank you! Public policy both local and national in the minds of our citizens has become so detached from a persons daily experience, I am not sure people really understand the meaning of the term. I really like your beginning explanation! Very helpful!

Who sound-checked this poor lady? She's trying to talk through all of that feedback and mic scratching. Good on her. But, it is so difficult to focus on the content because of all that extra noise.

Sounds like if anyone is trying to be a policy changer or anything to do with public policy to change the lives of many, you have to get into politics where laws are really changed

or how about better allocation and management of existing tax dollaz
@r.forrestblount9222

Shampoo, I think her vision is that better public policy leads to better prioritizing of existing tax dollars to better fund the areas that would improve our lives.

Her mic is being muffled since it is not strategically placed that it won't be touched; very annoying!

What would have otherwise been an engaging talk was ruined by the sound and microphone set up. So much so that I could not continue past 8 minutes. Shame.

I mean I can still understand what is being said, but yeah pretty bad job by the audio op. I'm watching as part of my social work class but I've worked as an audio engineer for years and done loads of corporate gigs like this, I'd be embarrassed if something I did went out like this, so much handling noise and feedback, sounds like they have an unused mic open and someone is handling it. pretty distracting to say the least.

either that or the lav placement is just awful, rubbing on the clothes etc. also beltpack on the front is just an amateurish look. maybe the a2 was on his first day.

With 30-45% of taxes and cost of living in Denmark it’s not far off what McDonald’s employees make in the US :-/ wish she would have expanded on that or just left it out.

exactly. They really start with us college students, to subtlety accept socialism. Its so annoying that colleges are biased, and not non-partisan

Leslie, whatever allows her to impart this important viewpoint regarding public policy is okay. That's the method she chose. If she could have spoken off the cuff, I'm sure she would have.
