I’ve watched this video at least 4 times now. RU-vid recommends it to me every couple years, and I watch it every time. So much amazing engineering on what we think as a simple invention, but it really isn’t. It’s the evolution of 80-100 years of engineering, and has been improved over and over again until the consumer can’t even see the improvements anymore. It’s gone from a good design, to the best possible design within the parameters. Truly amazing.

If you ever find yourself questioning biological evolution, just think about this. This is just a behavioral version of the same process. There's continual experimentation. Against that, the variations are tested. If they work, we keep them. If they don't, they are replaced. By keeping the things that work well, we close the search space, so to speak. We eliminate a lot of the randomness. And the various selective pressures all compete against each other with the more important ones having more weight on deciding whether a variant works and is kept or doesn't work and gets lost. Here, we see variants tested for ease of production, amount of material required, cost, material strength across a whole variety of factors, amount of volume contained, amount of pressure accommodated, stackability (tensile and compressible strength), even simple ease of use by a human so that it fits in a human hand, opens with a human finger, and doesnt encourage the human to do stupid or wasteful things with a tab. And biological machines like proteins, enzymes, tissues, etc, all evolve in an analogous process. (Yeah, I'm a nerd =D)

You know you're a good teacher when you can make something as seemingly mundane as the aluminum can into one of the more captivating videos I've ever seen. Almost everybody, including I would say most instructors, struggle to keep explanations in layman's terms without dumbing it down, as almost none of us speak the internal language of whatever industry is presented.

As a survey archaeologist, I have been using cans to date the age of historic sites discovered in the field. We need to know when sites are over 50 years old. When I began my career, the steel beverage can with church-key openings was historic and all aluminum cans were modern. As time went by, bi-metal beverage cans (steel cans with aluminum tops) became the indicators of historic sites. Then pull tabs became historic. Now we monitor the shape of the aluminum can openings to precisely date the can manufacture year. I was unaware that can diameters had changed through the years, this I learned from this video! In the future, printed bar codes will help archaeologist date sites. However, I am finishing up my career, so will leave bar codes to the new generation!

Needless to say, when they made the top smaller, the cans could then escape that loop or get jammed, and sometimes led to them falling out and exploding in spectacular fashion. Other machines though didn't have that problem since they had the guides in the middle.

+Pata Tamás It's almost perfect. Unfortunately, I'll have to mark it down a bit for the following reason: - Pronunciation and spelling of 'aluminium' incorrectly. Sadly, I feel like this negative point means I'll have to give the video a 1/10.
@lowercherty
@lowercherty 8 лет назад
+blobbem It's an American video, we say aluminum here and in Canada. The Brits say aluminium. Just like tire and tyre, harbor and harbour (Canadians spell that with the u), "zee" and "zed" for the letter Z, and a host of other common words. Not better or worse, just different. @DrBrainTickler 6 лет назад
Straiden I enjoy Vsauce. ;-) Are they even alien? Perhaps they are just more of the same. Masses of microbiological symbiosis. Complex consciousness. Perhaps the universe is a life-form of which we and the so-called aliens are the sensory organs and or brain cells of said universe or lifeform. Even if the aliens did create the dirt and us, what created the aliens? If something created the aliens then what created the aliens creator? Eventually emergence becomes our answer out of infallible logic. In regards to space time... Time is a mathematical tool of measurement. It's a representation of motion. Objects in motion with certain structural geometries will interact with other objects in motion and that will produce the so-called dirt, in the long run... So that would be correct that dirt is a product of the space time continuum... as are we all.
