The inner secrets of eBay and Amazon LED lighting festoon.

I bought this to see how waterproof it really was. I wanted to check out the quality of construction and how the individual lamp holders were connected to the main cable.
It turns out that it's quite a complex construction.
Traditional outdoor festoon is based on a flat rubber cable with lamp holders attached directly onto it with an IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) that pierces the two conductors in the flat cable with spikes for an electrical connection, and then clamps on with enough force to prevent water ingress. That approach has the advantage of being very compact and allowing lamp holders to be quickly placed anywhere on the cable. It's still used on some Christmas lighting frames, where a single cable can be attached to the frame with the holders in the appropriate positions.
The downside when using it as a traditional suspended festoon is that the holders can end up pointing upwards if it's thrown up in a hurry. Waterlogged lamp holders can lead to internal carbon tracking and flashover, knocking out the whole circuit and often involving lots of time to find the faulty lamp holder.
This approach has the holders at factory fixed positions with the advantage that even with a twisted cable the holders will generally dangle downwards. The fixed spacing of the holders limits the use of the festoon to simple decorative or general illumination. All festoon should be regularly supported along catenary wires, on hooks along a wall or under a roof edge to avoid stressing the cable.
Ideally the lamps chosen for use should seal gently onto the surrounding flexible plastic rim of the holder. Low power LED is preferred and there should be no seams or vents on the lamp external to the holder where water can seep in. This makes the glass LED filament lamps perfect, not just for their functionality but their appearance.
The current rating of the cable is the limiting factor in how many lamps can be used, and with LED lamps you have to consider the power factor. For the typical power factor of a 2W LED filament lamp of around 0.5 you have to treat it as a 4W load. That means I would limit the maximum number of 15 lamp strings connected together on a 240V supply to about 10 or 12. With the common plastic golf-ball sized LED lamps rated 0.5 to 1W the power factor is so bad that they have to be counted as 10W lamps, reducing the number of 15 lamp strings to just 5. (Use the filament style LED lamps. They're better.) With a 120V supply the number of lamps that can be used is typically halved due to the higher current for the same power.
The UK plug on this set was fitted with a 13A fuse which should be changed for a 3A or 5A one. The Cable is marked HO5VV-F with 0.75mm csa conductors. If the cable is copper (which is not guaranteed these days) then the current handling capability will be in the region of 6A The PVC insulation is not rated for continuous outdoor use, but is OK for short term use. It is not as resilient as proper UV rated black rubber cable.
The availability of the LED filament lamps in other voltages makes it viable to use this festoon on a 12V DC supply. That could be for remote solar operation or it could be for safety if the lamps are at a height where they can be touched. With a 12V supply and 2W lamps each festoon would be better with its own power supply instead of extending them to avoid progressive loss of intensity due to voltage drop.
The DC approach would be perfect for filming applications due to the absence of flicker.
You can also get 3V lamps, but they're rare and while it would be fun to run festoon on a single lithium cell, it's not very practical.
Note that there are cheaper versions of this sold with less lamp holders and traditional high power tungsten lamps in the same shape and size. Be careful to check listing details and power rating if buying a string. It's cheap enough to buy a bulk pack of 12V, 120v, or 230V LED lamps online if you get the wrong set.

12:55 "ac connections can lie under water for a while and not suffer damage" I can attest to that. I work on a chicken farm. One day i got to work and in walking around i noticed one spot where the ground was steaming. Well under that spot was a buried junction box. Its where the mains come onto the farm and are junctioned to the generator cut off switch and back. Called the electric company and they sent out a crew since it was on a main line. Turns out that entire underground box was underwater and once they opened it up it was just like a simmering pot. The whole time the power was still on and working as all our fans and feed lines were still working. The only giveaway there was a problem was the steaming patch of earth.
@BlackEpyon
@BlackEpyon 4 года назад
Well, there is still better conductivity through the copper/aluminum (large gauge still uses aluminum, I believe) than there is through water, especially if it isn't salted. Was this junction box single, split or 3 phase?
@keithyinger3326
@keithyinger3326 4 года назад
@@BlackEpyon Its not 3 phase i know that. Not sure what you mean by single or split. It is the main junction box where 240V mains power comes from the road. Then after the fact we installed the generator when we started raising chickens in the barns. So now it comes into that box, goes out to the generator cutoff switch then back out, so if need be, the generator can run the 3 barns.
@BlackEpyon
@BlackEpyon 4 года назад
@@keithyinger3326 Places that use 120V mains have what's called "split-phase." That's where for the service entering the house/farm, there will be neutral, ground, a hot, and another hot that's 180 degrees to the first one. Either of the hot lines to neutral will provide 120v, but between the two hots, because they're 180 degrees to each other, will provide 240v. It's commonly used for large heaters, like electric ranges and clothes dryers in the house.
@keithyinger3326
@keithyinger3326 4 года назад
@@BlackEpyon ahh ok. Then we have split phase as a lot of our fans and auger motors run on 220. I know how to test the lines and where to look if we only have 120v to a fan that's supposed to have 220. I'm a farmer, jack of all trades, master of none. I know enough to be able to diagnose and fix things but in no way an electrician that knows all the correct terminology haha. If things get to bad though we call a real electrician, or for things like re-wiring breaker panels and stuff like that beyond just basic diagnosing why a fan isn't working.

yh but use ya common sense ,why would it be a full 240v on a strong of multiple bulbs ? the cabling would be very very hot, then again if its from china anything can happen, also them bulbs would cost a lot more to get 240v down to 12v individually rather than from the source
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 4 года назад
@@girlsdrinkfeckThe idea is that these can run on 12V or mains voltage depending on what you need and you could use either globe. In fact, this set actually can use both 12V and 240V globes and comes with the mains plug. If hooked up with the mains cable, as supplied, using the 240V globes, it certainly would have mains voltage at each socket. I am not quite sure what you are getting at with the cable being hot at 240V. High current at 12V will make the cable hot too, if you mean temperature. It's the amount of power through the cable that would generate heat. As long as the insulation can handle it, you could send 1000Volts down the cable at low current and not have any heat. That wouldn't do the LED globes much good though :). Taking into account the gauge of the wire used, combined with the wattage of the LED globes, you'd get virtually no heat, even if you had 3 or 4 strings joined together.

If 13.7 volts is the maximum limit for the DC lamp configuration, you could use these for camping, running them off of an older Chrysler vehicle. Those charge at 13.5 to 13.7 volts. So you could start the vehicle and not damage them. However if you have a GM vehicle, you may need to disconnect them if you are running the engine. GM's charge at 14.2 volts. (My 1985 Chevy truck charged a wee bit more at 15+) So, if you do wish to use them as camping lights, be sure your vehicles charging system does not exceed 13.7 volts. Anything over 16 volts and you begin to risk more sensitive components like audio and engine management systems. Also applicable for RV's or boats running Chrysler / GM power plants. But regardless, check the charging voltage before doing so.

I got a set of these, they was put up inside a gazebo and where the cable from the bulb meets the block junction it arced out and exploded because the live wires had been exposed. Scared the shit out of me because I was sitting right next to it.

BigClive's using 2W lamps; but the cable will handle 800W (~3A @ 240V) for 10 lamps, so you could safely swap in e.g. 10x 50W UFO-style LED lamps to get eye-searing lumens :-)

the only thing i can see that could be a problem is the short leads to the lights are not double insulated so if they do crack up in the sun live wires would be exposed so 12 volts seems the best option .

Does it want 12V exactly or 12.6V? I've never been able to tell whether things that ask for 12V actually mean it literally or if they're too lazy to specify the decimal.
@bigclivedotcom

Some lights like car lamps are described as 12V despite running at 14V on a fully charged battery of a car electrical system, others are rated to drop 12V across them when powered via a resistor. It's not always clear which is which.

The parallel festoon can be cut to length. The cut end should be insulated and protected against water ingress if used outdoors.

Clive, I live in the states and we have 110 60hz. I have led Christmas lights that flicker and trigger my daughter’s migraines. Question, can you recommend a proper way of smoothing these or should I just toss them? Thanks
@theskett
@theskett 4 года назад
In case BC doesn't answer: get (or make, from 4x individual diodes) a bridge rectifier and moderate-sized capacitor (e.g., 47uF); feed the 110V into the bridge and then to the cap. Feed the lights from the cap. This will over-run the lights by about 40% and (so) reduce their life, but if the alternative is throwing them away I figure that that doesn't matter :-) I'd get 400V-rated components, should be sump'n like $1 total. You could conceivably add a cap-dropper or series resistor to avoid over-running the lights, but I doubt that that's worth it; too much thought and effort, not enough gain ;-) It's also possible that the lights have some odd controller that hates DC, wants AC, in which case my suggestion won't work. Not sure we can help ya, then, although you might remove the controller...

I do not think that it would be an aluminum rivet - because such a rivet in contact with brass would eventually oxidize, become resistive and create a fire hazard. They would know that, right???
