Take a lesson new young directors: The absence of music can be extremely powerful

Silence can be scary also.My mother worked in the Department of Correction and she told me when inmates make no sound;something big is going to happen.

That's right, especially in the The Birds of Alfred Hitchcock, the whole movie is without soundtracks and music

@@judekelly8324 The fact that the eyes pecked out scene had no music was really what made it scarier than it was, someone even said that the audience screaming when they saw that scene was the filler for the music instead.

This movie has something the remake didn't have: ATMOSPHERE.

The only worse injustice done to Deborah Kerr by the Academy than never giving her an Oscar (despite seven nominations!) was that she wasn't even nominated for this extraordinary film. Take a look at the utterly horrific speech she screams out to Miles at the end -- in which she reveals just what a twisted, neurotic person she is -- and tell me that those few minutes alone shouldn't have made her Best Actress. And the LOOK of this film! Freddie Young, who did the dazzling color cinematography for "Lawrence of Arabia", showed himself to be just as accomplished a master of black-and-white in "The Innocents". Whether it's comedy, drama or horror, there's something so bracing and delightful about being in the presence of such talented people.

The phallic curtain pull rhythmically rapping against the window while Miss Jessel’s voice moans, “Love me! Love me!” Masterfully done.

At one point when Deborah Kerr's character wanders around the house at night with only a candelabra for illumination, you might think you see something in the corner of your eye. You do. It's the clapperboard which had briefly wandered into shot. Jack Clayton decided to keep it in because he liked the idea of something almost subliminal being present to add to the air of unease. source:imdb

This and the 1963 The Haunting were both equally two of the most frightening motion pictures imaginable. In my opinion.

This film doesn't play on cheap startle tricks. The thrill of it is in the build up: Are the people possessed or is the governess just going mad?

In this chapter of the book, there are no sexual ghostly conversations or laughter overheard...she is sitting there reading, in the early dawn hours, gets the feeling something is going on in the house, and goes to investigate - and encounters Quint on the staircase. It’s the creepiest passage in the book - I always wondered why they didn’t include it in the film.

This is just the creepiest scene in the whole movie! I think it tries to show that the woman is mentaly disturbed. Think about it. She was raised by a religious father ( you know christians' position towards sex), she has never left home before ( has never had a clear view on sex), Quint and Miss Jessel have been having sex in the presence of the children, leading to the children's corruption. Seeing that she was raised in a religious household, she thinks sex is a demon ( / evil ghost), so she thinks the kids are possesed by the lustful ghosts/demons of Quint and Jessel. That's my psychoanalysis. What do you think?

The special thing about this movie is,how we mostly/almost always see things from Ms. Giddens' perspective. On my first viewing I was absolutely convinced that the children are possessed and Ms. Giddens is the nicest caretaker ever..the children are hostile at times, but she wants to help them anyways. However, on my second viewing, the lines got a bit more blurred. The children's reactions at times are so extreme that it makes me question Ms. Giddens' sanity(the lake scene being at the top of this list) Also, since Ms. Giddens is the protagonist it makes me wonder whether we are being taken through her disturbed mental state via all these scenes. Your theory is interesting and makes a lot of sense.Even more so since Ms. Giddens is seemingly young, and doesn't seem to have had any sexual encounters in her life.Have her personal views twisted her understanding of Miles & Flora? Or are Miles and Flora really possessed? The latter part derives a lot of evidence from the ending of the movie..the manic laugh, the change of tone & language, the apparition in the glass window and Miles screaming "Quint..Peter Quint"

Ah, the old argument about the sexually oppressed Victorian woman. James himself said he intended to write a ghost story. That is the way I will always see it.
