Albert Belle AKA Mr. Freeze may have preferred a cold clubhouse temperature, but he was a hothead on the baseball diamond. For Belle, playing angry worked, as he averaged 40 home runs per season during an 8-year span. However, his temper and inability to control his emotions led to drama on and off the field, including run-ins with fans, contentious interviews, and aggressive contact with other players. Albert’s bad reputation was magnified by a corked bat fiasco. His complicated relationship with the media cost him an MVP award. During his prime, Albert seemed destined for Cooperstown before a hip condition derailed his career.

People like to accuse Belle of being a juicer, which I believe him when he says he wasn’t. I loved his response. “If I was taking steroids, I probably could have hit 60 homers every year.” The dude was problematic as hell but we need more dudes like him. Social media has made too many athletes fake as hell

Belle wasn't a juicer, he was a corker. Now there's a debate over whether corking a bat really helps the ball fly more, but the fact he did it and tried to cheat to get competitive advantage still makes him a P.o.S., even if you don't count faking an injury, quitting right after getting a $70M deal or something like that, and being a horrible human being.

Barry Larkin should have a video, he's usually forgotten about compared to the other 90s shortstops like Jeter, A-Rod, and Nomar, but his prime was elite and he's easily a contender for the best Reds player alongside Rose and Bench.

Hell yea, I'm an Astros and Yankees fan so I got no bias here, Larkin was an understated legend. Legit one of the best offensive SS of all time, whole career with one franchise, he was super consistent and just did everything the right way. Great player, Cinci should be proud to have him as one of theirs. He's the Biggio of the Reds.

@@NYY300Completely forgot about Morgan but he only spent 8 of his 22 years with them (granted he was absolutely elite during that time and was an All-Star every year with them) and Joey Votto and Frank Robinson put up more WAR for the Reds than Morgan did. He honestly deserves his own video though, his peak was unbelievable and is the reason he's widely considered the best second baseman in history.

Thanks for doing this on Albert Belle. Many people talk about the 1995 season, and we all know he should have won the MVP. But Belle's 1998 season with the Sox was also incredible with 49/152/.328 with 200 hits and it's sad he wasn't elected as an all star that season. But yea those Indians teams were amazing with Lofton, Manny, Belle and Thome. Please do one on Thurman Munson who should also be in the HOF

Still holds the single season records for HR and RBI for the ChiSox! Pretty impressive considering Frank Thomas was a monster. Belle had an off year in ‘97 while Thomas had a stellar ’97. They flip flopped in ‘98 🙄

@@edmondlau511 I know, they are still records. They flipped their productivity the two years Belle was there (But Belle still hit over 30 hrs and 116 rbi). I sort of wish Belle had stayed in in Cleveland. I mean the Tribe did make the series in 97'. Cleveland still won that division both of those years. Today's Orioles team could possibly be like that Cleveland team in that mid 90s. They just need pitching.

@@flame-sky7148 I remember the Sox still sucked after signing Belle. Ventura broke his ankle in spring training '97 which depleted their defense and they lost a 25 home run lefty. It would've been quite a show if Thomas and Belle both had great seasons, they would've done some damage for sure but the Sox couldn't get their pitching right.

@@edmondlau511 Yea, Ventura's defense with his 6 Gold Gloves would have helped including his bat. The Sox also traded Baines after 90 plus games (which I don't know why, he was hitting .300??). But yea they lacked pitching. They got a segment of a 1998 game on YT, with the Sox vs. Cardinals and the Sox were down like 7-0 in the late innings, then Belle hit 2 hrs and Ventura hit 2 homes and the Sox came back and won that thing. It was simply amazing.

This video made me happy. What run production year in year out! In my opinion he deserved more years on the ballot maybe even a spot in the HOF due to his insane prime. And I agree with Belle that the best feeling in baseball is driving in runs. Nothing beats the high you feel after driving in runs with a clutch hit

Just based off his performance over the span of his career, he is a Hall of Famer. No doubt. It’s stupid to say this Belle shouldn’t be in the HOF because he only played 12 seasons. He has better overall stats than some guys who played 20+ seasons. 8X550=4400ABs…

People talk about character when a guy is not in the Hall of Fame, but those character clauses didn't apply to some players like Rube Waddell, Pud Galvin or Ty Cobb. There's a photo of Cobb drop kicking a catcher when he was suppose to slide into home. Go look up those guys incidents, nobody's perfect. And in each sports there some guys who simply have issues, and Belle was one of those guys. I also would love to see you do one on Ralph Kiner, like Belle played a short career, (just 10 seasons). Played for Pirates who played their games at Forbes Field, one of the toughest home run parks.

It's almost incomprehensible to think that he did this in a short season. One of the best years in the history of the sport. That season lit a spark for the Cleveland franchise that has been burning since. They've been competitive for most of the years since. And we're almost entirely a non factor before his 1995 season.

Albert 'Joey' Belle and his twin brother are from my hometown. His dad was the baseball coach at one of the big high schools here back a few decades ago. He never comes back around here but this is where he's from. He went to Huntington but his dad was the coach at Airline High School, across the river in Bossier City. It's Shreveports 'sister city'. Essentially 1 city split by a river but run by 2 city govt's, Shreveport and Bossier City.

Belle was a terror. The best player in baseball for a stretch. His legacy is tarnished by a bunch of soft, spineless media members who he refused to bend the knee and act the way they wanted him to act. The media screwed him because they didn’t like him. He was the most feared hitter in baseball and has a strong argument for Cooperstown. The same soft media members won’t let it happen proving yet again they should not be the ones with the ability to enshrine.

There's a balance between bat speed and inertia. A heavier bat will always make the ball go further in relation to the speed of the swing, but you have to be strong enough to swing the bat at nearly top speed, your bat speed with your game bat should be pretty close to your speed with a plastic wiffle ball bat, meaning about the same speed you can pull your hands through the zone with no weight.

Albert Belle was a douchebag off the field. A kid in Seattle came up to him, while he was leaving the stadium after a Mariners and Indians game at the Kingdome, and handed Belle a giant caricature (spelled correctly) of him and said "I made this for you because you're my favorite player," to which he looked at it for literally two seconds and said, "this looks nothing like me!" To which he shredded the picture, threw it on the ground and then just got in a taxi with Kenny Lofton and left without saying another word. The kid was like 9 years old picked up the pieces in shock and just slumped back to his parents with tears in his eyes. When he limped away from the game into retirement, I was thrilled that he was done and was forced into retirement by injuries before he could amass enough stats to be considered for the Hall of Fame.

@@C00lGuyWithHats Not even close. I was about to ask them for autographs when they left, and was about 5-7 feet away. I suck at drawing, but it was really good. The fact that you even ask this, instead of the focus being on their actions, tells a lot about how you live your life, and what you put value in when being told something. It's sad really, make an adjustment, be a better person, the people in your life deserve far better from you.

@@DrWestlake that’s hilarious coming from the guy who had a smile on his face over someone’s injuries and early retirement, Albert belle was hard as they come and a beast at the plate. You don’t gotta like it but you will respect it.

@@C00lGuyWithHats He was a cheater, literally using corked bats, and faked an injury right after the Orioles paid him, because he didn't want to keep playing. By the way, he only had 40.1 fWAR compared to Kyle Seager had 36.9 fWAR, while being a slightly above-average hitter and fielder. I smiled at him retiring from baseball, and even if it was about his injury. The concept of not having ill-will for bad people is dumb, as if someone saying good thing Hitler is dead would somehow make them a bad person. Then you say Belle isn't Hitler, to which I say, I also didn't wish Belle dead. Even then, now you're changing the argument, first you said "who had a smile on his face over someone's injuries and early retirement," but now I bet you're going to tell me Belle wasn't Hitler, which means you think it's okay to wish ill-will towards a person, so long as it's not Albert Belle or someone you value more highly than Hitler, as if people should conform to an abstract morality dictated by your own preferences.

@@friday0408 alright, fair enough, I actually never realized how comparable their careers were until you said that. Thanks for that, pretty eye opening. The steroids is still why Belle isn't in though, there were "suspicions".
