WOW! Honestly, FSR has greatly helped APUs. I am really curious to see how FSR 3 and Strix point perform together next year. We are on the verge of the death of low-end dGPUs.

FSR3 would be huge for lower end hardware. Although, I'm still skeptical on the visual fidelity when trying to duplicate frames around 30fps. Sure you'll get 60fps, but idk if that'll be enough frame data to not notice the fake frames. DLSS2 took awhile to mature, so I'll give frame duplication a benefit of the doubt tho

fsr3 will be good of you have 60+fps BEFORE fsr3, because of latency. And you will also receive fps boost even if you have less than 60 fps, but ot will be unplayable because of latency. That's why there is almost no sense for low-end gpus

@@NootNoot. it will become huge on next-gen APUs in 2024. Those APUs should perform like a 3060 or 4050. (strix halo). We'll see how FSR 3 performs then.

Im really impressed with the 780’s performance in the ally i know its not as fast as a 7840hs in a laptop because you can push it to a higher wattage. But I play most games at 720p on the ally and it still looks great and most games will run 60+ framerate. I think we are finally getting apu’s that can actually play games. I can’t wait to see where we will be in a couple more years. Been playing diablo 4 all day on the ally I much prefer it to the steam deck.

Thank you for a great video. Can you run Unigine Superposition benchmark? Maybe even basic VR test they have? Just wondering. I ran it on 5700G, and showed OK for basic VR. I did dedicated 4Gb of RAM to iGPU in BIOS.

Its not that "professional" players want better FPS its that people who actually play games and try to win want to play at 120+ FPS so that they arent having a hard time seeing whats happening during fast action and dont have to deal with the high input lag that comes with lower framerates.

First off wanna say I'm so happy you made this video I love having this much data. But i was wondering something I can't seem to get an easy answer for. Since the APU uses system memory as it's vram buffer, if you have 32gb would you actually be able to max out textures in a lot of games? Or would there end up being a bandwidth limitation that prevents this?

Yes ... From what most people have found, going high on texture sizes, even for 720p has very little impact on the actual performance (IF you have loads of memory to spare). The issue is more the number of pixels your pushing (resolution), shadows, how many vectors your displaying, and other specialties like lighting, motion blue effects, raytracing, etc etc. Ironically, going high on textures, even at 720p makes games look much better. The reason why texture size matters for, 2GB/4GB/... dedicated memory on dGPUs, if because the moment that 4GB is full, you constantly need to swap. So basically, if you have let's say 120GB/s of bandwidth and 4GB memory size, you may lose a lot of that bandwidth in repetitively loading/unloading/reloading textures. That 120GB then becomes ... maybe 70 in one scene, 40 in another, 100 in another. Aka, the reason why you get massive FPS drops. This also influences other data in memory that may be removed and reloaded. You may have situations where a dGPU with 240GB/s bandwidth but 4GB, its FPS crashes down despite its more powerful and has more bandwidth, compared to an iGPU with 32GB memory and half the bandwidth. Look up some reviews of the AMD 6400 with 4GB and its limited 4X pcie lanes. And how performances crashes with games that hit that limit, and how bad it gets with PCIE3 4X...

I've noticed that the VRAM usage is extremely low (under 512MB) did you change in the BIOS the the shared memory from auto to a larger fixed amount (or even be able to do so)?

You cannot change the vram in the bios in this case. But that doesn't matter the laptop will use as much vram as it needs, it wont be shown as vram but mixed into the regular ram usage instead. But that's not an issue.

This is what happens with every igpu automatically in every system. It even happens when you have a dedicated Gpu. Once it's VRAM is too small it will use your system ram automatically. (if there is any left to use) otherwise ram and vram will start using the page file on your Harddrive as memory. And then it's absolutely game over 😜)

AC Valhalla, BF 2042, Control (also can get an FSR2 mod), Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, FC6, Hogwarts, NMS (those dips tho), RD2, with the settings you used still have great visual fidelity. This is ALL on a APU. Imagine if AMD decided to release this on its own on AM5... wait a minute scratch that, that would be too smart of an idea. My favourite game you benched is Star Citizen, the fact that you can even play at all on an APU is crazy, also a runner up is Diablo 4, and really appreciate the sim and building game. Honestly, I think the next step is to have these games run similarly without needing to plug into a wall with ~3hrs play time or having 1080p high settings. I personally have a 5600u laptop and with owning a desktop thats much more powerful I was quite surprised how well that ran. MGSV ran pretty solid at 60fps (although old the game engine was phenomenal) and sim games ran decently. Waiting to pull the trigger on whatever's next and by that time hopefully FSR3 is available and on few games (that I even care about). I currently mostly use it for emulation and old games, and the cemu bench you ran although you said you weren't experience with was fine enough! Amazing work on the video and great effort! Also haha ur right with CSGO, with laptops now, there's no complaining about frames now

Is there any benefits in cpu core allocation in task manager . What happen when you downclock cpu 5% and overclock GPU 5%. What happen if you feed more wattage at an increment of 5w to igpu. Lifting laptop vents 1 inch from table.

Thanks for the excellent presentation! I have a few questions regarding the performance of this configuration on battery: What is the battery performance of the 780m compared to the 7600s on battery? Does it last longer? Can the 780m game as well on battery as it does on mains power? What kind of impact does the faster ram have on battery life? And finally: did you have to configure anything in the bios to get the new ram working at the higher speed? Anyway thanks again for your great work!

Yes it lasts longer and it can game basically almost as fast on battery. I don't know about the impact of the ram on battery life. I did not have to configure anything in the bios though!

My 7940hs 780m struggles with ~30FPS in a small game like Rainbow Bily and I can't understand why. It's just a small game with recommended requirement of rx 5500. It doesn't even have the option to change graphics setting beside resolution and Vsync. That's how small it is. Don't know if the game is too heavy for its graphic or something happened with my gpu

If you retest when the proper drivers are out, make sure to let games finish shader compilation before recording stats as it can make a huge difference, especially Star Citizen which is like 3 times slower when shader compilation is running and that takes up to 22 minutes on a SATA SSD, 12-16 minutes on a PCIe 3 SSD and 5-10 minutes on a PCIe 4 SSD.

For example the new Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 has 7840S (which should be the same as 7840U but in an FP8 package), the 780m but also 32GB 6400Mhz soldered LPDDR5x (with the possibility to allocate 6GB on the GPU via the BIOS) and 1TB M.2 2280 SSD, all with a 65W adapter + 70W Battery and 30W TDP. How much do you think would differ from your 50 games benchmarks?

@@techoptimized honestly hard to guess since it has quite faster Ram which would compensate quite a bit. With the same ram I would say it's 10-30% more fps on my tests, But Witz the faster ram probably only like 0-15%. But no guarantees here ;)

Amazing work! Thanks for this! Old games without AA look better than new games with AA lol P.S.: I am a TAA hater and in every game I try to find a way to turn it off. For UE4 and UE5 games, you usually need to disable it in the config file. The popularity of TAA among game developers is due solely to laziness in optimizing shaders

I believe upscaling is a practically the same as taa as well, but with more information and AI stuff whatever

If your results are any indicator, then the 780M should make a VERY compelling case once it starts getting paired with DDR6 and receives more optimization. I have an Asus ROG Flow X13 that should be delivered tomorrow and I am looking forward to what it can do with 16gb of LPDDR5 6400Mhz on a 1200p screen. I would love to see a X13 refresh that upgrades to 32gb of LPDDR6. Optimization could easily take the 780M past the laptop 1650 benchmark and then DDR6 on top of that could make the 780M creep up just behind a laptop 3050.

Was it not possible to use more than ~400mb og VGA memory? I've seen another review not on this laptop that you could use more (4gb)

No it's not possible to change the allocated vram. But that doesn't matter. The laptop will use the regular ram as vram anyhow. So the performance difference is literally 0%. It doesn't matter.

@@Hubwood Yeah your probably right, they saw no difference when afterburner reported 4gb. It's probably just something Afterburner doesn't pick up. I'm sure most of these games wouldn't even load on 400mb anyways.

@@stjani10 oh most of them actually need much more then 400mb ;) and they take it. You just can't see it in the osd. 😐
