We were over ten minutes into the video and there had been no blue covers. It's difficult to image Fitz getting shut out, so I was very happy you got in a whole raft of possibilities toward the end. Happy book prize season!
Yes there has to be a FItxcarrarldo on there! Can you imagine a future list shunning a Fitzcarraldo?! It would be a bookish war crime!!! 😂 Which Fitzs do you want to see on the longlist Greg? I know you've been reading a fair amount of translated fiction yourself in recent months so have you got any non-Fitz books that you'd also like to see nominated?
I very much appreciate the authority with which you speak! So well-researched and prepared. Great list. This is also my favorite prize of the year. Take good care. ❤ TK
As well as Fitzcorraldo I always predict a book from Charco (possibly A Little Luck - same author as Elena Knows) and Tilted Axis (possibly DD’s Umbrella). Aednan is also on my list, as well as Valerie Perrin’s Forgotten on Sunday as I loved Fresh Water for Flowers.
Yes, Selva Almada is published by Charco. I think there's a strong possibility it could be Claudia Pineiro, although I didn't like either of her books so I'm hoping not!!
This must be such a hard thing to do when there are so many books to choose from. Living in the U.S our main issue is access so fingers crossed I can at least borrow some of the list 🤞
Yes there was a LOT to choose from! Months of monitoring the eligible book lists as more were added, checking eligibility dates, it's a fun process that I look forward to every year though!
I bought Pink Slime on a whim while traveling last summer and I hope it’s long listed… that’ll motivate me to pick it up soon! Edit: I read Ferocity by Nicola Lagioia in January and despite the somewhat compelling writing style, did not enjoy it or his characterization of women, so sadly I’ll be passing on his most recently translated novel
Pink Slime has a writing style that I think will go down well with some readers and not with others, for me when I tried it last month, it was the latter!
