no comparison to that, I've heard that analogy used several times, Layer Ones are like an airplane, there are many new Airplanes that have improvements, but in order to get to the moon, you have to start from scratch and build a rocket. ICP is replacing the likes of AWS with what? Because, no matter what abstraction you're using, cloud computers is ultimately very physical very concrete server-level hardware attached to very high speed networks powered by triple-secure electrical grid and power generators and serviced 24/7 by admins. I'm curious to understand this physical aspect of ICP: on what hardware, what network and what power will the "internet" computer run? It's one thing to use Jil's and Tom's spare disk space to offer decentralized file storage that many crypto projects offer and totally another thing to offer computing power. They seem to talk a lot about the abstraction layer where they re-use the concept of docker but they don't explain where is the actual hardware where the actual computing will take place. Is it the ICP nodes? If yes, what are those nodes? Obviously they can't be AWS hosted as this will defeat the purpose. So where is the ICP hardware? Is it Jil's and Tom's PCs running off home electricity and home internet? And how many millions of home PCs would you need to offer compute capacity even remotely close to AWS? Could anyone please offer some explanation?

The need for a sovereign secure network is huge and Dfinty aims to meet that need. AWS will still be around serving Web 2 infrastructure services, but blockchain is the future of enterprise and governments for the reasons mentioned. We are at the beginning

It's immutable and hack proof, just for one thing. It's also more efficient and cost effective. The incentive to run a node is to grow the ecosystem- so that your staked ICP yields you greater returns.

Could I buy all the machines and be god of icp? Could definity modify the machine and then create a back door? Upgrades? I own some, but I’m not terribly impressed with his explanation and leaves a ton of open questions as to how this system maintains itself and becomes more decentralised over time

@@walters6526 Modifying the machine isn't modifying the code. No offense, but I believe Dfinity has this covered. If a single entity owned all the nodes the network would be useless- because nobody in their mind would use it- so I wouldn't bother emptying your piggy bank if I were you lol.

I hold KAS just because I know it is hyped, as well as holding meme tokens etc... but ICP is my biggest bag, and even though it probably won't be my biggest gainer this bullrun, it will eventually be the #2 in marketcap and the crypto I will definitely hold some long term. I've seen ETH gains in 2 bullruns, I expect ICP to be similar.

The node provider makes this dedicated hardware (dfinity has requirements on which hardware to use and its very expensive). The hardware for one node machine is around 50k USD. There is no single point of failure because all nodes can talk to each other on code, so if one fails there are plenty of others and it is incredibly powerful so even if nodes shut off it will still be like nothing happened. Anyone can become a node provider you have to pass a proposal. anyone staking $ICP gets voting power to vote on system upgrades and many more. ICP is an open source protocol it is not owned by anyone, but Dfinity foundation is the biggest contributor to the internet computer protocol.
