The Internet's Nostalgia Addiction

Many people online have gained this rapid fascination with a fabricated and idealistic version of our world from the 90's and 2000's. Are their rose-tinted glasses warranted, or do they cause too much harm?

Eh, I don't think that was relevant. 2016 was bad, but 2024 is much worse. So comparatively yeah, the past is amazing and that part has nothing to do with nostalgia, just with things getting worse overall.

The main thing about nostalgia for me is that life before is much of a thing for everyone. It is a cloth that blinds people thinking so because when we remember things we think of it as good, warm, nice. Nostalgia is like how you see a feel good story, a utopia, a land or time when there are no worries, no problems, no sadness and only the good vibes. While completely ignoring while back then there were things that we as kids and ppl encountered that are way worse than today. For me, I like the things of nostalgia. I was born in 2004, and I do enjoy past media and lifestyle. But also, I do remember I got horribly bullied back then all the way through elementary, 9-year-old me can enjoy the things back then. And 19-year-old me can also enjoy the things now. The past has its good and bad, The present has its enhancements and difficulties, The future has its Hope and Worries. This video is really well written, and I can agree with almost everything in it. Amazing work man.

(Kind of unrelated to the video) I know there are a lot of people who like frutiger aero because of nostalgia, but I hold a genuine fondness of the style. It was the last iteration of optimistic futurism, which is kind of extinct now. I personally find it quite ironic that frutiger aero which is basically a style about being excited for the future is now cherished as a symbol of the past. (Much like the original Tomorrowland that stood at Disneyland.) Also that play set at 5:33 goes hard as f*ck

I have kinda the complete opposite of nostalgia obsession. Whenever my brother and or mom talk about the past as a better place (usually the 2000's i was born in nov 99 my brother was born Dec 03). And when I bring up the reality of it they get mad. My mom is nostalgic for specifically 07-09 ish due to it being after my chemo but before the divorce. My mom wants my dad back and those times but she ignores me coming home from school to her bloodied on the ground because my dad beat her. For example. There where good times but it upsets me my mom wants to go back in time to a relaity that never existed in her last year alive rather then get to know the current me and live the time she has left.

I was born in 2006 and sometimes see people younger than me (usually 2008-2010) also start to romanticize the later 2000's and early 2010's. It could be because we become conscious of our surroundings, realizing the world is complex place, so we desperately try to cling back to when we were innocent/pure. It's akin to the modern day fear of "FOMO" which has started to take a toll on all us through these troubled times.

ok i was in high school back then and i thought everything was bad compared to the 90s but now that the 2000s are over i know what was good and bad the 2000s had great games and online culture but back in the 2000s i assumed that it would only get better. movies were much better in the 2000s too but i still hate 2000s music i think it got slightly better now .and in the 2000s getting online could get annoying now its easy and very rare to not have any internet access but in the 2000s it was seen as a luxury and i would have weeks without internet because they were too lazy to fix it because not enough people complained . the 90s had way better music and i prefer the colourful look but i don't remember much. and while i said the 2000s had great games there were some annoying fads like making everything too dark .the current era seems quite bad but it has some good things too

Inside Job has an episode that does great at showing the 2 sides of nostalgia. In “The Brettfast Club” protagonist Reagan wants nothing to do with, and dismisses co-worker Brett’s feelings towards his nostalgia for the 80s. However Brent’s obsession with the 80s is very unhealthy, so much so that he makes Reagan and the other employees pretend to be a sitcom-esque family from the time. However, we soon learn that Brett came from an abusive and neglectful home, and that he uses nostalgia for certain aspects of the 80s as a coping mechanism. Reagan understands why Brett is so into things from the 80s, and becomes more sympathetic to him, and Brett learns to find the balance of reminiscing over the past whilst not being stuck in it. I come from a good home, but definitely related to Brett in using things from a certain generation as a coping mechanism. I was in a pretty bad spot in my tween years, and fixating on 90s-early 2000s nostalgia, and while it wasn’t super extreme, I did develop this mentality of everything from the Mid 90s-early 2000s being better than the present. My fascination with the time period remains, but nowhere near the same level. Additionally, it’s purely the aesthetics and entertainment of those times I’m into

Ngl politicians use nostalgia bait as well. They make people want "what we had before [insert party] came in and twisted it up" instead of pushing some new ideas that could actually be beneficial to modern society.

6:00-7:10 OH MY GOD thank you for covering one of my biggest issues with this stuff! I've slowly grown a bit tired of the type of "nostalgia" stuff that the internet tries to feed me due to it being overwhelmingly Amerocentric. I'm Finnish myself, and although we're sometimes referred to as "the most American country in Europe" it still does not mean that everything from the USA automatically carries (or carried) over to here. Obviously this does not just mean the architecture and "generic suburban homes" not existing here, but the film/TV/gaming cultural touchstones as well. Also, this ties to another thing that I feel like is not given enough attention, namely that the non-American world of yesteryear generally wasn't very wealthy, i.e. less income to spend on whatever imported entertainment and related devices there were available. My mother, born 1968, owned *one* compact cassette album (Creatures of the Night by Kiss if you're curious) in her youth, and no one in her circle of friends had a microcomputer or a gaming console.

Banger video, I'm also getting a bit tired of all the nostalgiawank. I was born in '96, the 2000's were nothing special. If anything, I was thinking about how gamer kids these days have it WAY better because I lost so many PS2 games to disc scratching and now everything is digital lol. But I agree wholeheartedly, in the present day we can literally take everything good from the past and leave the bad stuff behind.
@awii.neocities

eh, i considered it the same. disc scratches are annoying. but they’re just as annoying as having to buy another hard drive or manage all your game space because the games you have are each 100gb lmao to be honest, no generation has it better than the other. it’s just that each generation has different problems

I don't feel that much nostalgia addiction from the pictures, especially which was not a part of my childhood, but there is one thing which is a bit concerning. When i was in primary and early secondary school (2012-2017 kinda) i used to have a good push-button phone (i don't really remember the model) and not allowed to have anything better than it because i didn't behave well and so on and i REALLY hated this thing, cuz it was obv so old fashioned and made me be completely lost in that day's teenage culture. But now, when I'm fully grown adult i think that i kinda miss push-button phones and especially java games on it, i sometimes even think to spend some money on one lol And i definitely don't think that i would ever develop such feelings without Internet and it's eternal nostalgia now

in my personal experience, i engage with nostalgia because i can't remember my childhood. i grew up severely abused by my parents and because of that, i have massive gaps in my memories. i miss the times before the symptoms of PTSD set it. i feel like that's the case for a lot of the original nostalgia-core stuff, especially traumacore. traumacore was a way for people to express their trauma, especially victims of CSA. but during 2020, suddenly there was a massive influx of the mainstream mixing with the alternative. traumaless people couldn't understand the roots and utility of traumacore as a coping mechanism and were like "oh this is just 'emo' hello kitty." i'm not gatekeeping here, but the effects of mainstream and alt melding into each other during 2020 make for quite some food for thought.
