I have worked as an assistant production designer on Rocket Boys, and come from an industry where I have no clue about about Rocket Science. But, just the mere scientific research for the script and story has taught me so many things about the perseverance and the will Indian scientists had back then which have paved a way for today’s scientists to achieve something as magnificent as the launch of Chandrayan 3. In the past week, like everyone else, I have been glued into India’s tech strides as well. What I don’t understand is the admiration, and in fact, the hue and cry, about the low budget of the project. It just goes out to show that we are yet to figure out workers’ rights. Statements like, “we love Science and that’s all we work for”, “for the bonuses, the Dosas did the trick”, are kinda absurd. In the guise of simplicity, we just refuse to pay our artists and scientists fairly. Of course similar projects in the West would cost exorbitantly more. They pay for things like health insurance for every single employee, regardless of whether they’re a scientist or a janitor (I mean no disrespect, all jobs are important). The factors that bring the cost of such projects down in India are quite obviously at the cost of well-being of innumerable employees.
