I’ve done a lot of interviews over the last decade. I love it when I go into an interview and I get knocked out by the artist as a human being! Where my expectation are blown out of the water, where I ‘m looking at my camera crew and they’re looking at me with the same flabbergasted intensity like Wow! This person is really cool. Growing up on Punk/Indie in the 80s, I actively avoided Pink Floyd/Prog. It was uncool "Dinosaur Rock" & your parents going to Lazer Floyd didn't help. _Kid A_ comes out & critics compare it to _DSOTM._ So, out of curiosity, I listen to Floyd for the first time. They had me from the opening chord of "Breathe". Joni Mitchell's another one. Celebrated primarily for her early Hippie/Laurel Canyon albums (which I still can't get into), I never understood the depth & expanse of her genius until I heard _Hissing Of Summer Lawns._ Some of the most sublime, elegant music I'd ever heard.

Great question! What jumps out to me is November Rain, by Guns And Roses! I didn't care for them until that song, which is now one of my favorite songs of all time!

Cyndi Lauper, and the first time I heard “Time After Time". She had a depth and soulfulness that I hadn’t expected, having only heard her uptempo material at that point

As a drummer, I love how she references her “percussive” playing, the importance of “stops,” and teaching guitarists the rhythm before notes (and scales). Not to mention how she seeks a drummer who “swings” instead of a straight 4/4 and/or four-on-the-floor style. Basically…a drummer with groove. Well done KT…and Professor!

Dear Professor of Rock. This is one of the best interviews I have seen on your channel. Sometimes, in interviews with other people, it is like pulling teeth to get the artist to tell an interesting story. However, in this interview, Ms. Tunstall is such an engaging storyteller, and you gave her the space to be one while still directing the conversation. You guys really meshed well together. As a music lover of comparable age, thank you for doing what you do.

I'd always thought 'Suddenly I See' was her breakthrough hit!? I'm pretty sure it was actually released *before* 'Black Horse...' here in NZ, at least! I remember (mis)hearing it for the first time and thinking, "'Some B.I.C'?! What does 'B.I.C.' stand for??" 😄

@@mightyV444 ‘Suddenly I See’ is what I remember being the real breakthrough too. Cherry Tree wasn’t even originally to be on the album. I definitely heard Suddenly first on US radio, new song CD’s that used to come in magazines. I seriously may not have known it was the same artist, as the songs are pretty different. At least the studio versions. Live, her voice is much more recognizable in both songs, but back when I first heard Cherry Tree, I didn’t think, “Oh, this is the Suddenly I See singer.” I think Black Horse was on a Paste magazine new releases/deep cuts CD, just months later, then the video was aired and she was promoting it on shows. The Jools Holland performance and the American Idol cover really broke her through though.

When it was said in this video that the song was from 2005, I was a bit confused at first because I'd somehow thought it was from the 90's! Probably because KT reminds me a lot of Melissa Etheridge, especially with *this* song. And yes, she's *totally* cool! 😀

As a brit.. and an avid watcher of Jools Holland.. I remember KT's first performance vividly. We'd always be out on a Friday night but would video (using that videoplus code from the tv guide ! ) the show to watch when we got back home. Everyone was blown away. The girt, passion and musicianship - especially when the loop pedal was so new - she blew our minds. In our circle we all say "No KT - No Ed" And she's as cool now as she was then.

The whole interview is great but seeing her playing her guitar and talking about how she came up with the sound was the real gem of this interview. She lights up when she is showing this off and you can see her passion and love for the music that influenced her. That was so cool and it made me like her even more. I had never heard of KT Tunstall before until I had watched the show 'Long Lost Family'. She had been adopted when she was very tiny and was looking for her biological father. She had found her biological mother and was hoping to find her father. She also found two sisters on her father's side. Such an awesome story!!!! I looked her up on RU-vid after the show and found I like her music!! And her accent!!! LOL

A lot was going on in my life when this song came out. I remember hearing it on-the-fly a few times. I enjoyed it, but it got lost in the noise surrounding my life. I swear, I thought it was Bonnie Raitt. I could not find it. I listen to every album Bonnie Raitt put out and was frustrated that I could not find it. The local DJs had no idea. I got busy, life got in the way, and time passed. Thank you for this. I never realized such a beautiful face was behind such a beautiful song. And such a humble heart. I'm driving to the record store right now to find the album. Her voice will accompany me on my next cross-country Adventure. Another great interview.

OMG! I love her! I remember the first time i heard this song. I couldn’t get it out of my head. I listened to it over and over again, having no idea how she did it. The comparison to Bonnie Raitt is a good one, but KT has her own unique energy and depth. The interview was fantastic. I love how you let the artist talk, without interrupting or redirecting. It strikes me that massive international fame in the pop music industry tends to accrue to narcissistic egomaniacs with no compunctions about manipulating and exploiting anyone else on their path to the top. KT is do great. She's so down to earth. You couldn't escape Black Horses and the Cherry Tree back in 2004 and 2005. That songs was everywhere all the time. Had been looking forward to see her with Hall and Oates and Squeeze when they came through town a few weeks back but she pulled out of the tour for hearing issues she's having. Hopefully she recovers soon. Thanks again for another great interview, Adam.

Thanks for the video. Your videos remind me of songs and/or bands I had forgotten as well as occasionally introduce me to new bands/artists. I haven't heard of KT before now and this is the first time hearing the song. Sounds like a neat song. I'll have to check it out in full and look for samples of her other songs.

The first time I heard Black Horse, it was being *broadcast live* on the BBC from Glastonbury. John Peel and Jo Whiley were in a tent and introduced KT Tunstall, cut to KT in a private performance area. Catastrophic equipment failure. KT spent a few flustered seconds trying to get her loop pedals working, gave up and then just ripped out Black Horse and The Cherry Tree anyway, without the effects, great performance. I've had nothing but respect and fondness for her since then.

I had never really paid much attention to KT until I saw her on Live from Daryl’s House. I was hooked. Later I saw her on a show where she found two sisters she never knew about and openness, love and personality just made me respect and love her more. She is awesome!

I saw a picture of the album cover, and thought this looks different, and I like all kinds of different music. I then heard the song weeks or months later, and got the album, and all the other albums that have been released. I like how she is always happy and friendly on TV or other interviews. I didn't realize the song was written and worked out as a way to use a loop pedal and make a song like that, and how it was almost left off the record. Great interview, I love how you do all these videos for a lot of songs and performers, sometimes the way these were done always has a great story behind it.

Thank you very much @Professor of Rock for this interview. You are in the strike zone for artists that I want to understand what motivates and how they are inspired by what they create. This interview took me by surprise like it did for you. I would like to commend you for your interview style - it really allows an artist to feel comfortable and think through the creative process that they use. I think it is true that almost no bands are a democracy and this makes total sense because and great artist does not want to compromise on their creative vision and also need to be able to work through getting to that perfect place of creative vision which is many times accented by beautiful accidents that happen along the way. I truly think your channel will be archived for the ages and influence a big way future artists that have that want and need to just be how they are and able to create and entertain regardless of how much fame the ultimately achieve. I am will be bet at some point in the future your channel and amazing ability have real talk with the core of the artist community will inspire many generations of new artists !!

Don't bleep out the curse words, it's not like she is cursing out anybody, it's just a figure of speech! I feel we need to distinguish between curse words with the intent to offend and "figure of speech" cussing.

Loved this! Her passion about writing and performing comes shining through, but the PG audio edits interrupt the flow a bit. When the Sex Pistols were on with Bill Grundy, they were pushed into being shocking, but KT is being herself. You should have let her emotions come out and be the victim of the dump button.

I remember seeing a clip of her performing Jackson 5 “I want you back” like 5-8 years ago during the whooohooo years. At first I was like; oh she playing to a backing track… and not even giving her band members TV time… then I realized she was doing all the loops, there in the moment, live… The sheer musicianship and balls it takes to even attempt something like that….let alone to pull it off. Wow, what a blast that must have been for you. I was completely intrigued. I love all of your interviews, but that was the fastest 25 mins ever. Fantastic, and riveting. Thank you for that one.
