In the 1600s, King Louis XIV needed to defend the flatlands in the north and northeast of France. King Louis called upon Renowned military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre, the Marquis of Vauban. Vauban devised a radical new fort design that proved incredibly effective; one of these forts was the citadel of Belfort. As well as fortresses, Vauban also invented a new weapon design, the bayonet socket, which allowed a pike to be attached to a musket and revolutionised battlefield tactics for years to come.
