Take one last journey into the IOKA Theatre and visit its iconic marquee with this film, which is my thank you gift to everyone who has been involved with preservation efforts over the years, especially in 2020. My hope is that this film helps us all find closure, healing, and unity after the loss of one of the last Vaudeville theatres in the US and one of the few remaining historical movie houses in New Hampshire.
The IOKA Theatre in Exeter, NH came into being in 1915, and its Art Deco-era marquee lit up the heart of downtown in neon since circa 1941. The IOKA's colorful, magnetic, and controversial history is, like the river that runs behind it, one of abundance coming and going. On December 23, 2008, the theater showed it final movie and efforts were intense over the years to revive it and bring it back.
I have been involved with the IOKA Theatre since my grandmother--who saw her first movie there in 1938-- brought me inside the lobby in the 1970s to greet the owner, a few years before I saw my first movie there. I have decades of warm memories of seeing movies with my family and friends (and even of causing mischief at the IOKA as a teen!). At age 15, my best friend and I worked at the IOKA, which was a Generation X adventure I will always cherish. Not many local kids could say they looked out of the "O" in the IOKA marquee, overlooking the town!
Fast forward to 2012 and 2013: My son, Brycen and I were deeply involved in the efforts to revive the theater as a community-run, membership-based multi-arts center. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, the efforts were not successful, and the theater sat vacant and decaying for several years; its marquee sadly advertised our grief.
In 2020, the IOKA met its 8th (9th?) owners who will be launching the building into an entirely new chapter-- no longer as a theatre. In May 2020, I founded the effort to save and preserve the IOKA marquee, and once again, this landmark entity called "The IOKA" consumed the community's attention, but this time "The IOKA" subject became a micro-chasm of the polarized divisions in our country. With the help of over 2,600 petition signatories and an alliance and group of many passionate preservation advocates, those of us in favor of saving the marquee moved our case through the town boards until our successes with the Historic District Commission were overturned by the Zoning Board of Adjustment in September. Now, a new chapter has begun of re-homing and restoring the IOKA marquee...
This film is not "the" history of the IOKA Theatre or even "a" history, but one artist's expression of how the IOKA weaved its history into hers and into her family history... Please enjoy my family archive of photos and video, plus wonderful contributed photos and video, as well. If you are interested in being considered as a candidate for the IOKA marquee, please leave a comment or private message me.

So sad to see this gone from the Mayer building! Like the gazebo, the IOKA marquee is an Exeter emblem, and one of the things that makes Exeter feel like a small, warm town---seeing those personal messages, from welcome home to welcome back from overseas, to "will you marry me?" in the heart of downtown. Thank you to all who fought to preserve her, and shame on the ZB for failing to protect the interests of the town--local charm is a big residential and economic draw for Exeter.

Thank you for your support... The IOKA and the IOKA marquee will always be special and in our hearts and memories. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a happy ending for the IOKA marquee, beginning its next chapter...

Born and raised in Exeter and got to experience the IOKA in Exeter as a small kid before it closed. Took up film making as a teenager and still make films. Would have loved to have premiered one of my films here as most of them are shot in exeter

That would have been an honor for you, I imagine. So glad that you were able to experience the IOKA Theatre as a kid. There is a whole generation of Seacoast-area kids who had never been to a movie there and only ever knew it as an abandoned building. So glad that the marquee and the building finally have begun new journeys of restoration rather than sitting in decay for more years.
