I would love to see more about ADHD. I'm soon starting my bachelor and I am worried about the impact of my ADHD on my performance. It would be helpful to see how a fellow ADHD-brain has coped with our kind of struggles :)

10/10 recommend getting a head start on figuring out what scheduling tools work best for your brain (Google calendar, automated text messages, a journal, etc.) In my experience, this is what makes or breaks adhd brains when they first start college life. Personally, I use a combination of Google calendar and a to-do list on my homescreen. At the start of the semester, filling out as much of my schedule as I can with classes, recurring social events, assignment due dates, and exam days really helps manage my time. Absolute best of luck starting college and hope this helps a little.

This isn’t necessarily the intersection of ADHD & Tech you were talking about, but I’d love if you could make videos about your experiences having ADHD and going through Grad School! As someone applying for graduate programs right now, it really feels like there’s not a ton out there about ADHD and School once you get past the Undergrad level!
@JordanHarrod

I was actually diagnosed in grad school, but I'd be happy to talk about my journey through the process! People on IG were interested in a video on my burnout journey too (which is how I got diagnosed) so they might end up being the same video.

@@JordanHarrod I feel like even if you weren’t necessarily diagnosed with ADHD, it still has probably had an effect on you before then! I know my life is a constant stream of “wait is that an ADHD thing!?” and is full of hindsight, and if anything I imagine your experiences as a Grad-Student with *undiagnosed* ADHD could be amazing to hear!

The very concept of drawing my ideas (right where and when I have them) on something that I can always carry with me and that cannot dissolve in water or get lost in "the stacks", totally blew my mind. 🤯

I completely agree with this. I use a desktop monitor for videocalls, surfing, emails and multitasking, but I switch to my tablet for reading, writing and note-taking. It's really much easier on the tablet. I also use a regular paper notebook on the side, especially while reading on the tablet. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one doing this :)

Definitely interested in ADHD content, since I was diagnosed less than 2 months ago. Meds are a huge help so far, but I've got to "pick up the pieces" of my life regarding education and such, so that I'll finally be able to support myself financially in the future. I had to drop out of university a few years back, but I'm definitely considering going back, and maybe even in a field not entirely dissimilar to yours (I mean something CS-adjacent, like bioinformatics)

I've been using an iPad for my notes for the better part of 5 years and am now in my final year of college where we're expected to constantly be looking up old notes from years past. Now I can just open up the old doc and search key words rather than stew in the fact that I would've accidentally thrown everything out years ago. It really has saved me so much suffering.

Interesting stuff! I was hesitant when my lab decided to purchase iPad Pro for lab notebooks but I really like it. I process ideas so much better with writing out, and it integrates better with all the digital files we have to put in our notebooks these days. Despite working in a wet lab I still haven’t killed mine yet either!

@@JordanHarrod Agree! My “desk” is just a lower area attached to my “bench” not great for keeping hydrated while doing computer work, but I try to keep electronics to the desk side. Nothing super dangerous or at all infectious in my worm lab, so I’m more worried about spills and flames.

For people why dont like to look at light-emitting screens all day I highly recommend a Boox Nova/ Note/ Max device, which basically is an Android tablet with an epaper screen. I recognize a lot of the usecase of the iPad in how I use my Boox Noteair2, but instead for me reading and note taking is its primary function. The epaper screen is a lot easier on the eyes which is something I really struggled with when I tried using a tablet to read college papers and stuff. Reading on my noteair2 is a lot more like reading of of paper. I also have ADHD, and I use my Noteair2 as my bullitjournal/ planner/ listmaker/ recorder of random things that come to me at not so oppertune moments. Its about as big as an ipad, but the boox nova skew (I used a Nova3 before) is a lot smaller and thus more portable, which is great if you want to use it as a portable notebook (I still cannot let go of my Nova3 for fear of needing it as a portable notebook sometime later). Really liked your video btw, and am currently scouring your channel for more ADHD tips and content!

I can't really justify buying an iPad at the moment, but I can totally see how this could help me. I tend to move to my laptop when I'm having trouble focusing on writing a script, but even then there's not as much friction to multitasking on there as on an iPad as you mentioned (especially since I have the 15" MacBook). I'm probably going to switch to a smaller M1 MacBook when I make my next upgrade because I really don't need a larger laptop screen having a computer monitor and the smaller screen helps me focus when in laptop mode (plus less heavy).
@videblu
@videblu 2 года назад
This mirrors how I feel about OneNote and my Surface Pro, except for the whole multitasking thing. Coding on a single, small screen is not fun; I'm constantly switching between windows juggling documentation, code, references, stackoverflow, and the actual code. This sucks because I end up being totally unproductive until I get home to my dual-monitor setup. These patterns also happen with non-code assignments too, since I might need to look at Onenote, the textbook, my notes, Google, etc. I find that when I don't need to reference anything, and I know exactly what I need to do and how to do it, I have no issues focusing. But as soon as the tiniest bit of uncertainty pops up, that's when the ADHD barges in.

For your wide-screen overload: have you considered adding screen-curtains? Like old cinemas used to do. To only show as much as you want to see. And to draw fully closed when not required - not only for aesthetic reasons but also (I expect) to reduce dust accumulation.

Thanks very much. I’ve been wondering about large or multiple monitors for productivity and the assertion that you’re more productive. The research I’ve read (and I’m still digging) is mostly about moving content from A->B and doesn’t take into account executive function or the myriad applications and distractions that most people have around them. I’ve wondered if a device like an iPad helps constrain the environment so that you do actually get more done. This does seem to be some anecdotal evidence that lines up with my thoughts. Off for more research.

For anyone not interested in the Apple ecosystem but wants to experience the tablet benefits to productivity, the Samsung Tab semes are excelent. It has taken Android devices years to catch up but I finally feel they are there. As such I have invested in a tablet recently & can attest to the bench't to study that 'pen' notes has (for me). further productivity gains to be had by being able to take a strong productivity device to the sofa, park or whenever.

04:51 where you describe your office as "cluttered and messy"? Whaaat? Nothing like my "soup" of past, present, tangential, to-do (someday) and misc. stuff that mustn't disappear from this reality (as it surely would if I were to tidy it away somewhere).

I appreciate you sharing this a lot. I'm trying to find an alternative to handwriting... I found that keeping smaller lists when I have too much to deal with is complicated. It feels like a waste of time and paper to write down something im not gonna use anymore at the end of the day(which makes me not use this and keep my mess, even though it really works when I do it), but also the price tag is huge... still making my mind about it and you definitely helped! :)

You should get a mechanical keyboard with lots of tactile feedback. It really helps with attention and connecting mentally to a given task. If you have problems losing or misplacing things, I would get the Apple AirTags. They're reasonably priced at $29 for 1 or $99 for 4. I wish the pencil had a Find My feature.
