In 795, the Irish warrior culture comes in contact with the Viking warrior culture. This clash sparks multiple centuries of brutal conflict, shifting alliances, and power grabs that culminate in devastating wars and battles, and the rise of the storied High King Brian Boru.

There has been lots of talk down through the years of making a film like braveheart but not as fictional . Brian was born not far from where I was born. The south west of Ireland is probably the most Irish part. Living along the coast is hard enough to this day. The vikings helped the country ultimately but it was to beat them in the end.

Problem is that Mainstream media wants you to see history differently these days so I doubt we would get a film about Irish or Scottish White men and women doing there thing. That would be some how offensive to a very small % of the populace that we all cater to for some reason. So theres that.

@troubledseed counterpoint: you've got a recent movie like banshees of inisherin which is about civil war Era rural Ireland. Not a single POC in the movie and it was nominated for many awards as well. Or look at The Northman, a big budget medieval norse epic, again with no POC characters but nominated for awards and reviewed favorably by critics. The narratives you are exposed to online do not reflect reality.

Machiavelli once said that centralized states are difficult to conquer but easy to rule, while decentralized states are easy to conquer but difficult to rule. The former can concentrate greater strength against you, but have a fixed point of critical failure. The latter might not be able to bring as much strength together at a single point, but individual regions and local lords are used to operating independently. The Vikings kill an English or French king and the country devolves into chaos. They kill an Irish king and the Irish shrug and say "Eh, we've got 99 more kings where that guy came from."

I did an exchange program last year, and stayed in Clontarf for two weeks. The history of Ireland remains palpable, you'd think Brian Boru had died less than 100 years ago, not 1000. I'm still enamored by the culture of the Irish, how persistently independent it is; it felt as though their ancestors were family, not the distant men relegated to history books.

Its always been fascinating to me the contrast of ireland. The island is a land of plenty. Verdant fields and teeming shores gave rise to one of the most embattled people on the planet. They fought each other for their land as much as they fought others. Often times it seems as though they only banded together to fight off a greater threat so they could get back to fighting each other. All of this is a back drop to one of the deepest repositories of ancient stone monuments and artifacts; belying and undercurrent of pervasive culture that almost seems at odds with the war like people.

I'm a student who studies extensively into Early Medieval Irish History, and you've hit the nail on the head with his video. Modern history grossly misportrays the Vikings as having an easy time in Ireland, which they did not. One minor detail I personally feel that should be addressed is that the Vikings did not introduce trading with the outside world to Ireland. Evidence exists of Irish trade with the outside world dating roughly 6000 BC from Jadeite axeheads found in Ireland that came from a Neolithic quarry in Italy. Brian Boru and his victory in Clontarf is also greatly downplayed by museums and historians alike, who act as if though it was a petty squabble that happened for no reason and that no one won the battle, which is utter rubbish. You touched well with the themes of ancestral heritage and the ancient tombs of ancient kings who were still praised by their descendants, it is something that is not often discussed in my experience. Apologies for the lecture, but this topic is one I am particularly passionate about due to how downplayed Irish resistance is against the Vikings and how Brian Boru is treated as a side figure of sorts by many. Edit: I forgot to mention the Scottish, who are often overlooked on this topic. Fair play for giving them a mention as again, they are often overlooked. There's not enough I can say without turning this into a longer lecture and I do apologise, nevertheless, great job with this video.
@HistoryDose

Awesome! Happy to have your seal of approval! Right, the Vikings facilitated trade but did not begin it. In a longer format, I would’ve also mentioned the lasting material (e.g., weaponry) and linguistic impacts both cultures had on one another. I’m going to post the full script with footnotes and the bibliography in the description tomorrow, but you will see that Sean Duffy’s book on Brian Boru was a key source for this. I think he did a really admirable job of poking holes in the more extreme revisionist takes and analyzing the sources to discern the true significance of Clontarf. In other words, it didn’t “save” Ireland or banish the Vikings, but it did quell a legitimate threat from a people who had just conquered England-there’s a reason why all the contemporary sources regarded it as momentous! Thanks for watching!

This is some insane geopolitics! So much fighting and kingdoms packed into a relatively "small" landmass. I like how Dublin would NOT stop rebelling. The most shocking thing though, is how the Irish could do so well in battles where they had much less armor than the Vikings.

Hallo from Denmark. Great video. Yes norse kings submitted to the irish kings as client kings. But In the end . The irish kings took greater interest in trading towns. And some irish kings deposed norse kings of the towns and themself took up residence there. But towns like Dublin, Limerick, waterford and wexford started out as viking citystates. But ended up as resistences for the irish kings. And eventuly a mixed irish/norse culture came into exsistence. But that all ended in 1171 . When the english king henry the second and his norman knights invaded Ireland

@@mortenovergaard7397I am not shameful at all. My ancestors did what everyone at that time did, slavery and conquest was a part of their culture and had been for thousands of years. I very much support Torgim Titlestad’s theory that the viking raids were a counter attack against the Christians that had been encroaching on pagan lands for centuries, after the forced conversion and then massacre of pagans at Verden in Germany their chieftain sought refuge with the Danish king, that’s when they started working on Danevirke and later attacked the christian world.

Fun fact: Ireland wasn’t catholic Christian during this time, but Celtic Christian. This was a unique blend of Christianity and Irish pagan beliefs and culture, this was why they were so war like even after converting, their cultural blend of the new religion kept the Irish tied to their war like ways, even bishops became regional warlords in their own right and often warred with other tribes and monasteries.

The way you portray these conflicts is so concise and clear as well as the artwork just really hammers in the amount of dedication and effort you guys put in. How did Sitric survive? You'd think killing the king and his firstborn heir would be enough to guarantee an execution no matter who your wife is.
@HistoryDose
@HistoryDose 4 месяца назад
One key thing to note is that Sitric did not take part in the Battle of Clontarf, but stayed back in Dublin. Brian’s army had won the battle at a great cost, and were likely incapable of marching on and conquering Dublin. And even if they had, executing a king was viewed as an extremely serious crime, even a rival or rebel one (Mathgamain’s killing was viewed as especially treacherous). It may have also just further inflamed tensions with Leinster and overseas Norse.
