This is the story of a chapel made from a nissen hut by Italian prisoners of war who had fought bravely in North Africa in the battle of El-Alamein but found themselves in a prison camp on Orkney a long way from home. Using whatever materials they could find such as an old car exhaust and concrete to make a font they produced a wonderful chapel which was surprisingly moving to experience.
This is the video about the sinking of the Arandora Star - • Guilty of being Italia...

I visited Scotland some years ago, but missed this masterpiece of Italy abroad. Many thanks for giving room to this unexpected place!

I saw it with my speech therapist friend when we took a guided bus tour, which included this stop. Fantastic indeed!

We visited the chapel in 2019. It is a truly amazing little place. I thought it would be underwhelming, but photographs and videos can't do justice to the craftsmanship. (Particularly considering the very limited resources available.)

That's a moving little piece of WW2 history I didn't know about. Some parts of the Italian army performed much better than it's often believed over the conflict, but, as a modern Italian, I don't feel any pride about that. Those men were, sadly, fighting for the wrong ideas and the wrong regime. Thank you for this enjoyable and interesting video!

Many thanks for the comment. I have sympathy for the ordinary soldiers who had no choice about anything and ended up in the north of Scotland. It’s worth a visit if you are ever in Scotland. Keep up the good work with your channel.

Yes, it surprised me how moving it was. I almost drove past without stopping but glad I did
