Kevin and his family do a day trip in the neighbouring municipality of Tweed, Ontario and shows how to paddle the J Stroke and Canadian Stroke. Rivers like the Skootamatta, Black and Moira offer fantastic whitewater paddling in the Spring of the year, but the calmer sections also provide perfect day outings during the Summer and Fall.
for more information on paddling opportunities in Tweed, contact:
tweed.ca
Here's a great on-line route map of the entire Skootamatta River. Kevin's family did the stretch from the Highway #7 access, north to High Falls, and return. An easy half day journey.

As a longtime flatwater canoeing instructor, I teach a slight variation to Kevin's J-stroke. As the paddle acts as a lever to push water sideways (to pivot the canoe), efficiency is important. Therefore, the blade needs to stay vertical. To do so, keep the 'grip' hand over the gunnel when turning the wrist (don't let it 'drop' into the boat), then push out with the 'shaft' hand. In that way, you're not 'lifting' water as Kevin seems to be doing.

When I was growing up, we used to camp at Vanderwater Conservation area, in Tweed every summer. The fishing and canoeing was so good. Unfortunately, they closed the campground about 20 years ago, but Tweed still holds a dear place in my heart.

I like the very similar pitch stroke or rolling pitch stroke, it is slightly more efficient.

I must agree the Skootamatta and Moira are great run-off rivers. I remember some fairly impressive falls on the Skoot.

Nice video, as a Canadian I can attest to the fact that we don’t call it the ‘J’ stroke because that’s reserved for when we’re smokin a ‘J’ on the water…😌

When I had a canoe, I tried the j stroke it worked pretty good. I don't have a canoe right now. Thinking of building a skin on frame. I'm hoping I can get it lite enough to portage with.

After being a canoeing instructor for 25 years I don’t recommend using the gunnel you were out the gunwalls and you were out your paddle your equipment doesn’t last long if you don’t take care of it But you’re right it is a wonderful paddle through that area I am partial to the Mag
@TheHappyCamper
@TheHappyCamper 3 года назад
Sorry. I disagree, especially while on a long canoe trip. If you don't use the gunnel after days of paddling, you won't be able to move your arms/wrists. You can place leather around the paddle shaft to reduce damage.
@suekaakee1356
@suekaakee1356 3 года назад
N Moran, I have to agree with you. Banging paddle on gunnel is definitely a big no no. The canoeist will also miss seeing much wildlife at water's with all that noise...ugh
@nmoran2046
@nmoran2046 3 года назад
Well Mr. happy camper I have yet to run out of gas in my arms and wrists and I often do 7 to 14 day trips so if your arms are getting tired you’re not prepared for the trip you’re on If all you do is leisurely paddle’s after dinner in your arms aren’t going to be condition for a trip so a leisurely paddle after dinner shouldn’t wind up with sore arms and if you have to protect your paddle because of poor technique oh it’s your paddle
@reelchef67
@reelchef67 2 года назад
@@suekaakee1356 That is not a "canadian stroke' as you know. Sad how much knowledge has been lost or misrepresented.
@sed6

Great video , thanks . I have heard that the Canadian Stroke is also known as the Omer Stroke , named after Omer Stringer .
@TheHappyCamper
@TheHappyCamper 5 лет назад
I think so too.
@greyone40
@greyone40 10 месяцев назад
I looked in Omer's little book "The Canoeist's Manual" and there is no mention of a separate stroke, but his description in the text on the J stroke is much as the "Canadian" shown here. I believe Omer is known for making the solo style of leaning the canoe popular. Then there is the head stand in the canoe.
@RimfireRat
@RimfireRat 6 лет назад
just saying in my rivers with currant the J stroke I believe is better open water calm still waters the Canadian stroke would rule. what I'm saying any time the blades in the water it is either pushing water or creating drag .knifing fwd is drag ,even if only slight
@reelchef67
@reelchef67 2 года назад
That is not exactly a Canadian stroke, there is a lot less arm movement and gentle rocking motion for and aft so as to save arm strength and use the larger muscle groups to propel thier heavily laden canoes , The voyageurs, metis ,ojibway etc used this stroke to cover long distances. This was taught to me by Ray K-Omer S and A Mcknight back in mid 70s.
@winstonsmith1222
@winstonsmith1222 9 месяцев назад
I was taught the “canadian stroke” as the Indian stroke. And you don’t need to take the paddle out of the water at all
@johnmoore5293
@johnmoore5293 Год назад
So why would you do any stroke that slows down the canoe and makes it wobble left and right? Why not pick the angle of entrance into the water that keeps the boat straight and have a complete power stroke without any slowdown at the end. With enough of angle you can turn the boat left or right without changing sides or slowing the boat at the end of your stroke.
@dylan15243

I just use kayak paddle. Way faster when solo.
@ashtonpilkey490

I didn't know the name of that Canadian stroke, but the few times I've paddled a canoe I just found myself doing that. Maybe it's just 'cuz I'm Canadian .
