This helps me get caught up to speed in older MT games I'm not wanting to play, so I appreciate it all the more. This is a hidden gem channel right here
@@PK_Scratch That was an intentional misnomer, to add brand recognition. The franchise was new and relatively unknown in the west, so they decided to give them all the SMT label, so consumers could easily recognize them as related. After the success of Persona 4, Atlus decided this was no longer necessary, and so the SMT title was removed, years before Persona 5 actually, starting with Persona 4 Golden.
First (and certainly only) time I'm catching day 1 and it's for the one megami tensei game made for the virtual boy, guess it's fitting with I love this channel and binging through it's content from time to time ahah xD
I have a Japanese copy of Jack Bros. and can mostly read its Japanese text on my own. It was interesting to see snippets of the official localization. I've beaten it with everyone except Jack Frost, and mostly agree with your thoughts about each playable character. My big disappointment with this video was that you didn't seem to know you can play the game like a twin stick shooter (e.g. firing south as you move east) with the VB controller's right d-pad, or however you emulated the controls. Makes the game easier, especially the vampire boss and the final boss. Also, you can speed up Pixie's tutorial messages with the A and B buttons.
>Playing without using the right d-pad to strafe *oof* Also the joke is that Pyro Jack suspects that Pixie and the Princess are the same person as they are never in the same place at once (even though this is already contradicted by the Jack Frost ending)
"reminds me of the Puzzle Boy minigame" The Puzzle Boy game is basically just Kwirk with some Jack Bros. thrown in. As much as people meme on this game for being on the VB and such an outlier compared to the others it's actually quite decent for what it is. Also it's interesting to see what the localisation would have been like before Nocturne and Persona.
>Best game on the Virtual Boy That would probably be Virtual Boy Wario Land. The spritework in that game is beautiful and it was wasted on a game for an abortion of a system.
Nice stop for the main event: DemiKids, Awww Yeah! (repeated joke). The only bad thing about the game is the red color, thats a drawback for me, but... Jack Bros is Jack Bros is the best game
Don't forget Black Jack....I mean Black Frost....I mean Jakku Frost. And then there's Ace Frost and King Frost and Demon-hee-ho and Raidou Frost and Frost Five featuring Milk Frost.....yes, that's a thing thanks to the greatness of Soul Hackers. :D
2:58 JACK LANTERN is his Japanese name. Since what they were obviously going for, “Jack O’ Lantern”, was too long for the Nocturne UI, they had to switch it up a bit. That’s why we got Pyro Jack. This stuck until Persona 5 when Atlus USA decided to backstep to Jack O’ Lantern.
adding onto this, Furin is more than likely supposed to be Cu Chulainn. other early translations butchered his name pretty creatively, like Last Bible's "Cufling" lol
@@ChoiceSnarf Jack O' Lantern is a better name for the character (seeing as that is literally what he is), but Pyro Jack will always have a special place in my heart.
I think the Pyro Jack ending is meant to imply that Pixie is secretly the princess, since she came out from behind the door Pixie hid behind. I have no idea how that makes any sense since you see them together in the Jack Frost ending, but I cant imagine what else its supposed to imply.
I interpreted it that *this particular* Pixie was the Fairy Princess herself in disguise and the Pixies helping Jack Frost and Jack the Ripper were just normal Pixies. It’s a bit convoluted, but I imagine that all 3 Jack Brothers’ “stories” are happening within the dungeons in a particular order, with one Brother speeding a floor ahead, one lagging behind, and one somewhere in between. I picture it like this: 1) Pyro Jack finishes first, hence the Princess not being there yet. 2) Jack Frost comes in second. 3) Jack the Ripper arrives last, where he and the Princess enter the door and it closes behind them; ending with the villains’ dialogue. Yes. I am also implying that the bosses got their asses handed to them 3 times in a row in the same 1 hour timespan. Could happen. Ya know... since Beelzebub clearly wasn’t dead in Jack the Ripper’s ending. I think of it like Sonic Heroes’ story, where everything happened but you don’t question it ‘because video game.’
It’d probably just be easier to make a fan remake. It’s not a very long or deep game... The problem for me whenever I open up Unity to try and make one is interpretation. What color is everything supposed to be? It’s all black and red....
@@no64256 Oh wow, that DOES look really nice... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kzN4lVvGczw.html _I think I’m actually crying over how nice it all looks in color..._
Geez, even on the Virtual Boy you get Pixie carrying your ass. Can't go a game without her having to step up and show the player characters how it's done. Giving hints, joining parties first, maxing out her stats, being the best dungeon-runner- Pixie does it all.
The Virtual Boy's display is red because of the Magatsuhi, ever wondered why you feel like you're having your soul sucked out by the device while playing it?
The Japanese cover art is what most people see out of context. The American cover art is what SMT fans and memers see. In all seriousness though, it's actually a pretty neat game. Shame it's only something on the Virtual Boy unless you use that emulator to see it in VR.
Hee ho MegaTen fans, Jack Frost is stuck in a red stereoscopic maze and he needs your parents credit card number and the 3 digits on the back to escape.
I wasn't expecting another one so soon! Thanks for the steady stream of incredible content! Apparently you can play this games with a VR headset to get the 3D effect. Now I'm definitely going to give this game a shot. About the "Jack Lantern" thing, I think the name Pyro Jack was just a localization thing that they eventually settled on. I'm pretty sure he's always been called Jack-o'-Lantern in the Japanese versions, and Pyro Jack was just an Atlus USA thing.
According to some pictures I found on the Megaten Wiki, in Megami Tensei 2 his name in English is Jack -O- Lantern, though the kana translates as just Jack Lantern.
@@t-wrecksthenerdasaur7468 Yeah, they know what it's supposed to be, but dropping the O' makes it easier to say. On the other hand, Will O' Wisp from that game is pronounced _with_ the O' because it would be harder to say without it (wiruwisupu? or back then, more like uiruuisupu??) How they spell "Jack-O-Frost" is just a mix-up though. That spelling suggests to me that Kaneko might have actually thought to include Jack O' Lantern in Megaten 2 before including Jack Frost, and someone conflated them. Pyro Jack could be the original Bro.
This game is so legendary that I think my eyes started bleeding a bit; that's why the game is all red, right? It's not..... it's not supposed to look like that, right? Guys?
I imagine if Jack Bros got a remake today, Pixie's ending would be her hopping in the portal and running into Demi-Fiend at the beginning of Nocturne. That would explain her being so OP here, because she's the famous Megidolaon Pixie.
What pun? He's supposed to be jack o'lantern. This is just taking his japanese name (Romaji: Jakku rantan) without change... This game is also the first to be released in english so no reason to use the localisation choice from the future.
Gabe Newell made the Index and invested in vr development not for Half Life Alyx but in hopes that Atlus will make a sequel to this game, true story cause my dad works at valve.
I'm gonna take a leap and say this is the best game review YT channel I've seen in years. In depth and entertaining about content that is hardly reported on elsewhere. It's also super refreshing to see a straightforward editing style instead of the crazy screaming Jontron copies that plague gaming content creators nowadays. You take these games seriously and I respect that. If you made a patreon, I'd support it.
Same. Your good just from your personality and casual humor. Nothing feels too scripted, and you take care to show off as much as you feel needs to be said.
