Anticipation can be dangerous. Although feelings of excitement may seem as though they’re inherently positive, the possibility of falling short of your expectations can mean that sometimes, they’re always going to eclipse reality.
In the music industry, the major record companies trade in leveraging your excitement into cold, hard cash. Orchestrated by marketing departments that have mastered the art of the rollout, they can whip the world into a frenzy about a forthcoming project. Other times, the artists take such complete ownership of their artistry that they do it themselves. For example, look at the unique rollout of Kendrick Lamar’s forthcoming Oklama and the palpable hype that surrounds it.
But while building hype is a necessary evil of the recording industry, the problems arise when the promise of something momentous goes unfulfilled and the listening public find disappointment where something special was meant to be.
And at the moment, this is a lesson that Jack Harlow is being forced to learn the hard way.

The Jack Harlow push was crazy. He received a sneaker deal, was on every magazine cover, was on every talk show, did SNL, tried to sing, and in return he dropped a MID album in between Future and Kendrick Lamar.

Yeah that's the thing, I mean for sure he is being hyped to hell by rappers and also fans, so I see the perspective that he failed to live up to those expectations. At the same time it's like he's just a dude. So he didn't make 200k, he still sold damn near more albums than a LOT of artists opening week. And there are tons of artists like him just going with the flow, not much regard for creativity. I could also see the criticism if he was talking shit about how much he was going to sell, but I really don't think so. I see the Jack Harlow push the same way I saw the Macklemore push back in 2012-14. He did SNL, multiple magazine covers, was a XXL Freshman, and had major accolades with awards and the charts. The difference between Macklemore and Harlow, however, is that people still find him as a good artist who has potential and was able to keep their head up after hitting a slump with their fans. I think Jack Harlow’s gonna grow with his fans instead of his fans outgrowing him, but only time will tell.
@anhiirr
@anhiirr Год назад
his fans? like dudes that pretend to like him to smash chicks...and chicks that like him bc they think JACK will smash them? And the low % that actually like him for his music as actual listeners? BC as long as theres college students idk about this "fans out growing him thing" i have cousins fresh OUTTA HS bumping KIDS from mac miller in 2022....and Kush and OJ....thats that whole thing about "FANS" out growing certain artists. I grew to like mac more as a producer as i got older. Same with KANYE from their initial albums vs the songs/raps they put out later on into their career. U look at guys like jack and wonder if hes actually not a bad guy then well shit i dont ever have to worry about hearing about him over dosing, or falling off bc of mentals, or some sex/bs scandal getting him cancelled...not a fan of his music....but i "could" be one day if he makes something i like and keeps at it. Jack harlow is popular for the same rasons radiohead is IMO Im not white so i think it has a lot to do with that NGL. BC i cant understand why/how he got so big(like stuck/sells) Other than what i stated about his fans. IDK its just like you go HUMM was AKON/FLO RIDA/T-PAIN so "DOPE" back then bc it was a different time...or were they just being PUMPED bc their product was palatable to the "WHITES". I mean Theres white girls that turn up to WAP/Jack harlow...and some that can turn up to afro puffs...and the SHEER amount/difference between the 2...is obvious or else wed have A hell of a lot more "less" attractive looking women pumping out crass/brute raps to this day. Thats the damn shame of it all....non th0ts are too busy listening to "INDIE" music or etc soulful music, pop etc...rap aside....leaving the th0t culture/demographic to be all thats left to cash in on....sex sells....so they double down until the machine/system breaks itself and "moral superiority" becomes the new trend.

The new album was very mid, everyone knows that. But people who say his career is over or that the “experiment failed” are overreacting. Plenty of rappers/artists have had sophomore slumps that they bounced back from. Even “corny” rappers like big Sean still had commercial hits and well-received albums after their sophomore slumps. Real fans of Jack know he has the capability to make solid projects like Loose and Confetti. If he can tap back into the energy of those projects then I think he’ll be fine. Either way, his personality is gonna keep him in some form of entertainment industry/the public eye for a while. But who knows, maybe he’ll fade into white boy obscurity like G-Eazy. Anyone recall the Pink line “we’ll make you a star, just change everything you are?” Although it’s gotten to the point where he purposely targets black girls as an audience and they seem to be eating up his fake ass. Sad how consumer consumption works and how corporations can influence us so much.

He needs to bring something fresh. He has potential. He has a personality that has people rooting for him. He needs to stop surrounding himself with all that luxury and start grinding in the studio. His previous album had so much soul, that organic vibe and that simplicity to it which instead of making it bad made it better which is missing here in the present album. It just sounds too mechanical, safe with all form and no substance. He has a personality and charm that's got people rooting for him nonetheless. So hope he brings his A game next time. I think he had the same issue as Saweetie being that their looks/personality/social media presence overshadowed their music career. Jack is a talented rapper no doubt but most people bought into him through Tiktok with “What’s Poppin’”. The difference between him and Drake is that Drake in his earlier days cultivated a unique sound with 40 and Boi-1da that helped separate him from other popular rappers. He also sung and delved into issues not many rappers were open to talking about. Drake was able to carve out his own lane early on. Even though Drake’s music now is horribly mediocre, he still has classic projects and songs so he’s able to get a pass with putting out mid music. Jack unfortunately doesn’t have that pass. He still needs to establish his sound and voice. But he’s young so hopefully he’ll figure out his artistic lane.

I disagree, especially regarding the comparison of Jack to Saweetie. Jack is not THAT bad, this particular project just isn't that good. Jack has enough talent with the right fire to craft something decent. Saweetie, on the other hand, is better at being a social media influencer, that's where her true talent lies. She is not a good rapper and rarely even has her writers craft her anything worth releasing. There's a reason she has yet to release her debut album.

I’ve been listening to Jack since back in since back in 2017 and one thing I’ve noticed is how much he’s changed up, I get he was younger so his personality’s gon be different but at least for most artists you can see their maturity and different points in their life reflect into their music, with Jack I used to hear the real and authenticity about him and felt like I was on this journey, then once he started to catch a lil buzz i noticed he switched up immediately to be this almost “to clean and perfect” dude which now also makes the music feel unauthentic so no matter how much training he gets to act a certain way it’s never gonna be the same with the music you can’t force that type of shit. Feels like he was already being pushed in a direction he wasn’t ready to go in and this is the result, it’s sad to cause Jack really has bars and did for a long time if you listen to his music from around 2017

*Jack is an enigma.* His music is like white noise ( no pun intended lol), loud and flashy enough to occasionally perk up your ear, but so droning and uninteresting that you can cook dinner, clean the house and do your math homework while it buzzes in the background. I personally leave each JH song feeling unmoved, but occasionally entertained. His likeability and his magnetic personality has been and continues to be his greatest strength as an artist. He is talented, no doubt, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that that's not what won him the favor with music industry. The push from the highest rungs of the industry and his social media clout created a double-edge sword, boosting his profile as an MC, even though he'd never be able to match the hype generated. *CHTKMY* was him aping his idols and recycling the same ol' same ol', occasionally great, but mostly passable and sometimes unspeakably bad. However, he has alot of drive and optimism so I won't count him out..yet.

You can really only push a meme so far in rap, at some point people get tired of the schtick and you have to evolve and actually improve your skills. Same thing happened with Lil Dicky and Macklemore.

Jack has to come out with a few BANGER singles quick to get the focus back on the right track. Get away from wooing the ladies with this abstract light stuff and come with some heavy 808s and a bravado in his lyrics that make people take notice. If the chatter is there that he could be "the next drake" he needs to be assertive and grab that sh*t. Follow that up with a concept album that sticks to a theme throughout and release a short film to go with it. An undercover cop in 80s Miami with synthesizer heavy throwback beats - he rocks aviators and a mustache in the short film... or a Blade Runner/Tron futuristic bounty hunter with drawn out chords - he rocks a leather duster with Neo shades in the short film. Expand the offering to the masses and morph his game into something new.

“What’s poppin is the best thing I’ve heard from him” is a stupid ass take. Truth be told I think most of the takes against Jack are coming from a place of defiance rather than actually solidified opinions. This album was for sure mid but it’s as if every person feels the need to put a spin on their opinion on him so the takes just become inflammatory and unreasonable. You’re always going to have the dusty dudes who call it fuckboi music and find their reason. You’re always going to have the people who just started hearing from him so think he’s an industry plant. And you’re always going to have the white rapper take because the white audience supports tf out of their 1-5 white rappers and we’re all tired of seeing it. He’s not done with good music in my opinion just think the stardom messed up his trajectory for this album.

How is saying "What’s poppin is the best thing I’ve heard from him" a stupid take when music is subjective? He never said it's the best thing Jack ever made. He said it's the best thing HE's heard from him. Who are you to say that something is wrong just because you dont agree with it?

Even if no one reads this comment, just here to say at the end of everyday the only person someone’s art has to impress is the artist. I can tell he’s very proud of this album, he has some of the greatest artist co sign him on this , a few that some who have been in the game for years haven’t even worked with yet. For people saying he’s an industry plant obviously don’t know about him working towards his goal for 10 years already.

the problem is the industry is so saturated with different artists that come and go every five minutes. and we see this every year, a hot artist that's hoppn on everybody's track also has every one featured on his songs. and than boom they come out with a album that flops, than they disappear. the average artist life span in the industry is 5 years tops. we'll see if he's still hear in another 2 or 3years. he's just the one who's hot at the moment, soon as the next one come people a be on to the next wave and Jack a be forgot about fr. it's just how it goes.

Labels really thinking bloating an artist with a few albums of useless fodder would make them a "star" instead of just going simple and doing EPs/shorter albums.

Jack is cool, I think next project has to be a bigger risk though. He doesn’t have to be genre defining or anything but he needs some spice mixed in the pot. More creative beats, different rhyme schemes, different vocal octaves too. His rapper voice is a voice he puts on. It isn’t the natural way he speaks. You can tell watching interviews with him. He’s potentially in the best lane to be in rn in hip hop. I rlly hope he shows out next time coming

He’s what people said Logic was, stealing flows, and having no identity. Logic does actually have his own sound tho, it’s borrowed from The 90s, with the boom bap sound at his core, and it works. I think that’s jacks issue. He doesn’t have a core fan base like Logic, and Logic is biracial, but he looks more white right. I’ve been to a Logic show on his second album in 2016 and the fans really showed up.
