as a kid in 90s Russia I can confirm, I got my Subor back in late 1996 unfortunately the controllers plugs was really fragile, pins in ports was a bit fragile as well due to the technical complexity we didn't have some major releases from Nintendo, like Super Mario Bros 2 (Doku doku panic) and Super Mario Bros 3 etc, we missed all major releases that required some additional chips in cartridges

As a guy born in and spend 18 years in China, here are a few facts I want to mention in addition to the video: In theory, game consoles are banned until 2014, but this doesn't stop us kids from playing games on all different game consoles. there are two ways of getting game consoles. First way is called “水货”, and can be translated to parallel import or smuggle, and sources can be from Japan, North america, HK and Europe, with minor price difference in final sale price. The other way is to re-purpose game consoles as other devices, for example, iQue is a partner and redistributor of Nintendo in mainland China, they call their iQue DS as “双屏多媒体互动系统” or "dual-screen multimedia interactive system" instead of calling them game console, therefore they can be sold on market. There are stores selling game consoles and games, for example, my hometown (a medium sized city) used to have 4-5 stores in downtown. When I was in middle and high school, I save money for a whole year to buy my game console, stores will crack the console for you (PSP) or sell you cracked R4 cartridge along with DS so I can basically play for free, and I pay a small fee (~1 USD) to get my memory card filled in store with whatever game I want. For TV consoles such as PS3, before crack, we usually rent games from the store by paying a deposit then rental fee, or trade in played games for another title. Before I came to Canada, I owned a Gameboy color, GBA, DS, DSi XL, PSP1000, PSP3000, and Wii, PS2, PS3, and by parents bought me NES clone, sega genesis, and a playstation 1 when I was young. As for 5:26, for Chinese gamer right now, buying games in store actually quiet an outdated way of getting new titles, and people usually shop games online since its often cheaper. Video game stores is almost a dying industry in China because less and less people buy in actual stores, therefore I can understand why the store keep a low inventory on their shelf.

9:11 He says 'demand that they sit down', but actually in China, if someone says 'sit down' like that, it actually means what we would say as 'have a seat', i.e. someone comes into your home you say 'hello, good morning, please, have a seat', that's why it's all done in that order like that.

I grew up in Ukraine, and yes, I remember my Subor very fondly. If it wasn't for that system, I wouldn't have had my first exposure to Super Mario Bros, Contra, Castlevania, Double Dragon, and so many other franchises that I still consider near and dear. My model was designed to look virtually identical to the Famicom, slightly different from the one at the end of this video. Mine didn't have controller ports in the front, only a single port for the light gun.

For those that don't know Naomi is one of the most prominent female tech youtubers out there. She makes almost all of her costumes and gear herself. In the past she has also been given a lot of hate for her appearance and looks sadly.
@tomservo5007
@tomservo5007 5 лет назад
The hate comes from the fact she is not telling the whole story. You really think she learned English from online forums? Her lack of Chinese forum postings isn't suspicious to you? There is also a questionable engineering team behind the scenes. The hate isn't from her looks (which by the way throws native Chinese views on modesty out the window -- odd thing to do for a native female to do in China) -- I don't hate her , but don't misrepresent the controversy.
@mjouwbuis

The Super Mario theme was running a bit slow due to the game being a 60hz version for the Famicom to run on the 110v 60hz Japanese mains. The UK mains provides only 50hz, hence the slowdown
@RMCRetro
@RMCRetro 6 лет назад
Interesting, although China is a PAL region which is a 50hz signal so I'd expect it to run the same as the UK game. I'll check it out with a side by side when my NES is cleaned up

@amirpourghoureiyan1637 6 лет назад
Not many early PAL Nintendo and SEGA games were properly ported to work on 50hz, e.g Sonic 1 on the MegaDrive. If you ran the US ROM of Super Mario on that NES RetroPi I think it would demonstrate the difference better.
@iykiyki
@iykiyki 6 лет назад
Though nes games has PAL versions, but most of the pirate game cartridges in China are copied from Japanese or American version, they are not intended to port to 50hz PAL machines, that's why it sounds slower.

Serpentza and his cohort Laowhy86 sent me. Interesting video. Funny story. Commodore assets were to be picked up by a Chinese firm in 1995. They wanted to make a CDTV style internet set top box for the mainland China mass market. That would have been an updated version of this concept. The company was a producer of knock off Nintendo clones and were under pressure from the Chinese gov to become legitimate and stop all the knock off product. But like all things tied to Commodore in the 1990's this deal failed. I remember they got to prototype stage and actually had an office in NJ USA a few towns over from me.
