My mom was lucky. She told me a few years ago that she was 5 years old when my grandmother took her and my uncles to the Apollo Theater to where J5 opened up for James Brown. It had to be around their first album and first TV appearances. MJ was a force to be reckon with, and he _still_ is. But I will give credit where it's due. Joe Jackson saw the vision that his sons had potential and he was right. Aside from the other issues concerning him, he did what he had to do in order for his family to thrive and survive. You will _never_ seen a family group or it's lead singer on the caliber we've witnessed with this clan. The boomers' and the hip hop generation/MTV generation witnessed what MJ was becoming in just a few short years. And remember _three_ of the biggest stars were black when MJ was dominating the globe. #RIPMJ

I grew up with the J5, and no thought of racism. We were poor and white. My favorite music to this day is Motown, R&B. I didn’t like the negative msgs. of a lot of the rap singers. Money, guns, gangster life. Michael was a pure loving person, and a wonderful father. I literally sobbed and was angry when he died. The Doctor did him wrong and he was black. Why is racism so much a thing today? Didn’t stop Michaels family, Ben Carson or Obama. I have visited his funeral site with flowers several times, and took my young white son as well to let him know one of the most important people in my life and the world was gone to soon. It still hurts to this day. Feel the same sadness with princess Diana. Hopefully, we can all move on over this racism issue instead of it dividing this nation. Racism goes both ways. A black man destroyed my life, and my sons but I don’t care what color he was, he was just mean spirited and a racist.

Supposedly this was their first televised appearance. I was just imagining their mom watching them on t.v. According to the mini series, The Jackson An American Dream, they showed her watching them at home live with her Mom and other children etc. I really tried putting myself in her shoes at that moment. It must've been incredibly gratifying to see her son's on such a stage. Then of course we all know the rest of the story, legends in the making here. My God there will NEVER be anyone as incredible of a performer as Michael Jackson and his fame in the 1980s was absolutely insane, if you weren't around to experience it, its very difficult to try explain to people just how insanely famous he was. No one has ever come close since Michael. Before him it was Elvis then Michael just went ballistic. I am so so so very grateful to have been 13-14 years old during 1983. That year Michael Jackson was just beyond famous it truly was crazy.. I'm glad I was around to see him at various stages of his career. From child prodigy to master craftsman of his art form. All the M.J. love is to be expected...but! Ya gotta give equal props to his brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon. And these brothers played their own instruments..this was live, the first song no lip syncing. And props to Johnny on drums, Ronny, on keys. They were (our) Beatles, The Jackson 5ive set the stage for many young start up bands. Of course little Mike, was the star but them brothers were equally talented, and the band was tight. Sadly today, we only have a handful of amazing talent. Our kids today don’t have the musical work ethic, like a Jackson 5ive. Today it’s all studio enhanced, repetitive sounds. The live shows are special effects, and digital extravaganzas, to hide the non talented performers. Acts like Bruno Mars give me hope, because you see the showmanship, backed with a tight band. How would you look, and your grown. Most kids don't participate in talent shows. This boy sung in front of millions on camera and was better than everyone else! Now I see why MIKE had mask on and disguises. His life was no longer his. Imagine being 6,7,8 and the whole world knows you. Now as an Adult you can't go anywhere without someone noticing you. Elvis would be the same way.

The Jackson 5! THE BEST. EVER. ANYWHERE. Credit Joe Jackson for having the boys polished and ready long before they even got to Motown!! (And that goes for the rest of the family like Janet, of course, Rebe, and Randy!) The body of work from Motown through CBS Records is astounding! And add to that what Michael did solo - this might never be matched again in the annals of music!!

There is obviously a treasure trove of performances by Miss Ross, Sammy Davis Jr., The J5, and countless others that need to be unearthed, remastered, preserved, and made available for public viewing. (No disrespect to RU-vid, but I think you get my meaning here.) This kind of art and culture are PRICELESS.

yeah us girls use to scream when the J 5 hit that move we called it popping. on some songs Marlon and Jackie hit that move too. We'd scream oohhhhhhhhhh they're popping. I saw them live in 1971 and 2010 with the Reunion tour after Michael passed. but you could feel his Spirit there, and this September 2023. So glad I was there from the Beginning and I Love them Forever.

I love the Jackson 5! Just seeing them perform live especially in the early years, you could tell that they loved to perform! From young Michael’s high-pitched voice to Marlon and Jackie’s wonderful dance moves, and Tito’s skills with his guitar and Jermaine with his raspy voice and his bass skills, what could go wrong? Nothing! They were perfect and still are perfect! Love you, Jackson 5! Jackie, age 18, Tito age 15 soon to be 16 the next day, Jermaine age 14, Marlon age 12, and Michael Jackson age 11!

I was only a couple years younger than Michael. When I was 7, me and my sister (10) used to make our Barbie's dance to our Jackson 5 records in the bedroom on the old portable stereo...in 1969. J5 was the absolute coolest in my 7 year old music scene at the time. Still luv J5 music. Feel like I grew up with Michael.

One of a kind band, The Jackson's 5. Grew up with IT since I can remember. I've not heard that 2nd song until my Beloved Husband would bass it out and sing this song to me, like a million times, figuratively. J5 were as my second tv family. Love the moves too! Its 2024 Mid March, and I am from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. A tiny island with people speaking a rare language called SINHALESE. I don't see any artist alive getting the respect that the legendary singer (late) MJ still gets from the people. I don't think there'll ever be anyone on this earth to match his talents. Many tried to frame him for various accusations to get money or fame and for that and he suffered alot. Even Oprah roasted him badly at one of her interviews by quoting those accusations. Shame on all of them. While they had him for real, they were busy for accusing him for his skin color, nose too, but eventually we lost him. HE IS A LEGENDARY SUPERSTAR AND I WISH I HAD ANOTHER BETTET WORD THAN THAT FOR HIM. It's like a bad dream that we lost this beautiful soul. Dear MJ, We miss you dearly. 😞

Note, the original broadcast faded to the commercial after Mike and the J5 began to break down into James Brown's "There was a Time." They did not come back after this segment. So this is literally it for the J5's national television debut. They actually appeared a few months earlier on the first Miss Black America pageant which was syndicated, and nearly two months later on Ed Sullivan.
