these old spirituals touch the soul because they tell us in parables our lifes stories that our life may experiencing rough seas but Jesus is at the helm in control and guiding us through what ever we are going through and calling each of us by name asking us to believe in him and he will get you through ..trust and never doubt he will see us through [he is the way maker] We do need to wake up !!

I first heard this song in 1949 when I was out of my crib. My mother put the radio next to my bed to listen to the soap operas on the radio as she cleaned my room. I listen at night and loved this song.
