The bass riff from Kuru/Speak Like A Child (from Jaco's debut album) is an incredible challenge for any developing bass player. Yes, it's fast but it also requires stamina. In this lesson I'm going to break down the riff and one of the common variations played throughout the tune and give you some tips on getting through the challenge.

Jaco just spoiled it for everyone else... no matter how amazing anyone is on bass there's always "yeah... that's good, but Jaco was better" gaaaahhhhhh!!!! Seriously though, thanks for this - brilliant video.

discovered Jaco last night while having my first jam with real musicians. I'm at the slightly better then Sid stage. Absolutely mind blowing

When the drummer doesn't stop at the end of a number and the bass continues on with him you can just hit one note fast and become your own Jaco, crowd loves it singer and guitarist not so much lol

Nothing easy about Jaco. So much respect for him as an innovative bass player.

Play for a bar, rest for a bar. Then two and two, four and four. That makes it easier to learn to step back from tension and progress is much quicker than only progressively speeding up.

Another simple bass line that requires stamina is Stratus from Billy Cobhams album Spectrum

Opus Pocus is the piece off that album that has resonated with me 20 plus years now. To me, the pinnacle of modern fretless electric bass playing.

Awesome lesson! Great breakdown of one of the all-time bass playing greats! He was awesome in the concert with Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny in the 1970s.

Fantastic lesson! Thank you Mark. Did you play the muted note with Finger 1, instead of raking down with Finger 2 in order to keep the same fingering each time around?

6:28 I rake my middle finger down from the G string to the D string then to the A string. So middle finger plays 3 notes in succession: D on G string, ghost note on D string, D on A string. Do you think your way is better or just different?

Why does it sound like two basses being doubled? I mean there's a very bright, slightly driven, sound (almost like a guitar) but there's also a deep bass sound (more like a normal bass) behind it. Is that something to do with the pickups or amp settings?

Crazy speed impresses me like juggling 11 balls does. "Wow," I say, "That looks super hard. Props for all the practice." But I think the riff structure is way cooler than the speed Jaco plays it at. I'll be stealing a bit of it for something more funky, chill & mobile.

I can’t make it through "6/4 Jam"; I practice and practice it-listen to Jaco’s version-I’m way off. One day!

Sheesh. That's "easy" to play at 1/8th speed, pretty challenging at half speed, and 100% impossible (for me) any faster than that. Kinda reminds me of another track I've been working on, "Halo" by Porcupine Tree. Trying to follow Nick Beggs at full speed is a SERIOUS challenge. I'm at about 85%-90% full-speed after days and days of practice, and the difficulty of achieving that last 10% is far greater than the first 90%. I fall apart in seconds. It's so fast I feel certain the only way to really play it is to practice it so much that it's just pure muscle memory.

Just a word of advice from a long term bass player. It’s ok not to like Jaco. Incredible acrobatics on the bass but can you really listen to his solo stuff more than one time through? Incredible player but his music does nothing for me. Now listen to Romantic Warrior and you can play it over and over…
