i personally think jake gyllenhaal and ryan gosling are the two actors that perfectly play characters that are indifferent and emotionally dislocated. their movies are just so relatable to watch... another jake gyllenhaal film i'd recommend everyone to watch is "nocturnal animals"
Recently I’ve been looking at certain actors differently, in a category of “can really bring it but doesn’t have to to get a pay check” and Jake Gyllenhall, Ryan Gosling and Colin Farrell, Adam Sandler as others examples are all on it. They’re good actors. Like really good. And they have delivered some incredible roles. But they also seem to be in a lot of projects that simply don’t demand or need a lot from them, so they don’t do a lot. It’s not a criticism in itself. We all have days at work and tasks that we do for the pay check. But I just think it’s a waste of their talent when we know from previous works that they can do so much more. And I blame the films for that, not the actors. If you make a bad film and expect actors to be good it’s just lazy and dependant. It’s one of the reasons I don’t watch films based on big names, it’s like a warning that they’re trying to sell you garbage so they’ve put all the budget into actors to draw an audience anyway and try cover everyone else’s failings. (unless is Nick Cage. I’ll watch anything if Nick Cage is in it) It’s not like, for example Adam Driver, Paul Dano, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day Lewis, who deliver even when no one else is lifting a finger. Which has its own problems because it makes even half decent films look bad because only one person is giving that academy performance. But I just thought it was interesting, to have range where you can literally try as hard as you’re being asked to. It’s quite inconsistent but not in a bad way. It shows an ability to adapt, if nothing else. They’re average parts of average movies and great parts of great movies if that makes sense. Also Prisoners is a film that really made me respect Gyllenhall’s work and at the same time I think as great as his performance was he was massively in the shadow of Hugh Jackmans incredible performance (one of his best in my opinion)
Absolutely, he's one of the most incredible actors and so underrated. He puts everything in to his roles. I have seen all of his films and 99% of the time I think he carries the entire film. He's got an amazing attention to detail. He's so good on stage too as as a theater actor. Unfortunately though he is just one of those actors that doesn't get the amount of credit he deserves
a lot of his roles are all about him carrying the role. He plays a lot of movies where hes the main focal point like this movie and donnie darko and nightcrawler and brokeback. He always has a major part in the movie.
What other "credit" would you suggest than many major movie companies wanting him in their products over the years? I'd say that's credit enough, given that it's his career. Someone who works well in an office and gets a promotion gets the credit they deserve. Same concept. He's a good actor but he's just another person. Let's not act like people need to praise the ground he walks on for him to have his "credit". :)
@Yeeyee even before spider man, everybody knew him but may b not from name.He was well known after prince of persia.Going into indie was his decision tho. Even at such a young age,he has achieved the title of "Elite actor". I mean i didn't keep tabs on him but was so surprised that he was in MCU considering he is above superhero films..but he got paid between 8-15 millions in FFH.that says a lot about him tho.
Just watched that last night for the first time. Such a beautiful movie, easily one of my favourites of his now. The relationship between him and the kid was brilliant
He has done a exceptional performance in 'Enemy' similar to demolition. Complexity of thought process of an individual is explained to a greater extent
Great take on Demolition. As a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan, the film didn’t left a big impression on me. I didn’t love it or hate it. But now I kinda rewatch it to see if my opinion has changed
So, what happened after the second watch ? Just like you i'm a fan of his, and just like you this movie first came as a "meh". Then i rewatched it this year and felt like it was one of the best movies i've ever seen.
Damn, just hearing you explain the film made me tear up. It’s really suck cause I’m a very emotionally person, I just don’t show it when I’m around people. So whenever something bad happens, people see me as “emotionless” for not reacting the same way everyone else is.
God Demolition was a masterpiece and I'm so glad you mentioned it. But one of my favourite jake moments is the Prisoners Door scene. The way his face slowly goes from cheery and happy to pissed and ready to go. The slight twitch in his mouth and eye is brilliant. The real melt away moment.
So glad someone else touched on this film. Having experienced grief more times than I count anymore, this film absolutely represents what it's like. Distractions, tearing down walls you've previously built. All of those things are relatable. I feel this is his best film of all. Incredibly real.
@@Guitar-Dog no one here is wallowing. But when I have heavy grief which I have, it's always flowing in u like liquid. It's your blood now, that doesn't change. It just shifts.
Jake is my favorite actor, when I usually tell people that they are thrown off but seriously his versatility is unmatched. I have others like Sam Rockwell, Edward Norton, James Mcavoy, Joseph Gordon levitt, Ashton sanders, Lakeith stanfield, among others in my list of favorites but Jake has a special place in my heart.
I first noticed Sam Rockwell, in a really small movie called Box of Moonlight, with John Turturro. Excellent character piece. Has something special, and Rockwell just Carrie’s it along.
One movie I really adore is "Buried" starring Ryan Reynolds. It's so unique, so well acted and really nails the claustrophobic atmosphere. Highly recommend it, as it completely goes against everything you're used to from Reynolds and shows how he's capable of so much more than just comedy.
watched this movie after breaking up with my first girlfriend atfer a 5 year relationship, i was in the same place as the main character just living life not feeling anything really from the breakup didn´t cry didn´t anything, and watching this i could relate so much to a lot of things that were happening it really did hit me
Honestly what's so amazing about Jake's acting that he can show so much emotion and personality just from his eyes alone. Other than that, literally every move he makes, no matter how subtle, is literally made to fit his character
i watched demolition when i had nothing to watch on netflix. n it really shocked me how good this movie was yet nobody wasn't talking about it. the fact that i followed through the character build up probably just like how the director was expecting the viewers to do was just amazing
i remember being interested in this movie and giving it a watch in the cinema. I went alone and the movie really effected me at the time and brought up those points of reflection that you mentioned (personal freedom, etc) I've watched it a couple of times since then and I still resonate with it so deeply and it's kind of a personal gem for me, to the point that (and I'm sure we all have a movie like this) whenever I find that SO in my life, showing her this movie would be an extreme act of intimacy for me.
it's funny that Leo deserved an oscar for so many roles and he finally gets one for what is probably his least enjoyable movie. I thought the revenant was incredibly boring and overrated
Was surprised to hear this was your first video at the end! The commentary you provided was wonderful. It was an oddly relatable topic framed in a way I didn’t expect, thanks for this video
So glad someone is talking about this movie. I know I'm late to watching this video, but I'm glad I've watched it. You perfectly described the movie in a way most people can get behind without ruining it. I've tried to convince people to watch this movie, but now I'll just send them this!
This video just popped up in my feed so when you said this was your first video on RU-vid I was shocked. Very well done. It seemed like a lot of other top movie or actor review pages.
This turned me on to a movie I might never have heard of elsewhere. Brilliantly written video. Thanks for the content you make. You deserve far more than 1k subs. Hope it comes to you soon, man.
I watched this movie after the first time watching your video. This movie stayed with me a long time. At that time, I was dealing with a personal tragedy of my own, and it helped me recover. Thanks for making this video.
When my dog that I had for 12 years passed away, I didn't really react at all. I saw my parents crying, I saw all the wreckage, and my mom sobbing for days. I didn't really tell anyone about my feelings, and actually, when I let some of it out (me being stoic), I was called psychopathic, for real. I guess Gyllenhaal's character in Demolition is one I empathize with immensely. If you steer a bit from the normalcy path, so many social skills are not assimilated in timely fashion, so people just write you off. As for the video, great first attempt! I would add some subtitles too.
A couple months late; I think you nailed what you should keep or change in your RU-vid videos with what Jake’s character realizes at the end of Demolition. There’s no “one way,” or “right way” to process emotion, and there isn’t a single way to make RU-vid videos. I really enjoyed your content and I hope you continue to make more!
He ranks among some of the most underrated actors ever and my current favorite actor. Right beside Sam Rockwell and Ben Foster Nightcrawler was a phenomenal performance Hell he was the best thing about Southpaw. He carried that movie
Its literally one of my all time favourite movies. I dont watch it for a long time and your words about it with all of These scenes, made me remember how i loved it and started to cry because of you talking about feelings. Thank you for that Man💪✌
I think It's so cool that I've experienced the movie so much differently because I didn't see him practicing how to cry but I saw him trying to stop himself from crying which literally made me realize right away that he is suppressing his emotions which led him to all those stuff he did in the film. On the other hand I think maybe people who did see him actually practicing how to cry, maybe thought he was a sociopath or that his natural self finally came to light since he feels a sense of relief after his wifes death. I thought the movie was really cute, I don't know. The characters were all interesting and I can't really tell how people weren't intrigued while watching this movie.
Another few films that come to mind for me are The Day After Tomorrow and Zodiac. I never see or hear anyone talking about these two films and I personally think they’re good films and that he’s great in them
