Jimmy savile was my babysitter when I was a kid ,he was very affectionate as I remember, gave me lots of sweets , and loved tickling me and playing doctors and nurses
The outro to this song is the best piece of lyric writing ever. ''Coz they've took the keys and she'll think its me'' has the effect of an electric shock.
"I glanced back on my life and thought about my Wife 'cause they took the keys & she'll think it's me" - Fuckin hell.....just absolutely top, top, top writing / story telling. Blows me away.
This is the very first song I ever read the lyrics to and almost burst out crying reading them! Paul Weller's words are like poetry...this is the type of shit we should be learning about in English!
I have loved this song from the day it was released! I love the 'outro' it gets me everytime, I learnt to play it on guitar many years ago and surprisingly it is not that difficult, but in doing so you come to realise that although Paul wrote it , the importance of Rick and Bruce's contribution in crafting it into the masterpiece that it is , should never be overlooked! A timeless classic! dx
This is a really harrowing bit of lyric, somehow managing to spiral from bad to worse as it goes along. Even more brutal is how clear it is that the beating he takes won't be the end of it. "'Coz they took the keys, and she'll think it's me..." Holy hell. A top song from a very strong album.
@@NickHarman My local Indian stays open until 1am and even later if you want a takeaway. I have often brought a curry home after a night out to share with my other half so it's not really nonsense it it Nick you pedantic deluded muppet!!
@@NickHarman Yes, they do. Understand the era of the last 70's. Many London office workers worked late and got home late and eat late. The London underground was crime ridden around that time.
"They smelt of pubs, and Wormwood Scrubs, and too many right-wing meetings..." Unfortunately, the pack mentality, in combination with misdirected frustration, exists everywhere. Part of the brilliance of Weller here is that he captures the underlying sheer pointlessness and randomness of the goings-on. Could have happened to anybody -- whoever crossed paths with these hyenas -- but that night it was him. Great bit of art.
@@secondchance6603 Do we? How? Are we the ones targeting people for the colour of their skin? Are we the ones still salty about the loss of the ‘British empire’? Cos last time I checked, it was you cretins. Off you f**k, you racist prick,
Aw, my most favourite song of all time! I remember when I was a lad, I was convinced it was Terry Mcann from Minder on drums and Ray Doyle from The Professionals on bass.
This song is brilliant they just a set of kids here writing and playing songs like this is phenomenal second only to Alternative Ulster as greatest song of its kind imho
TheEyeOfOdin1 It was Brilliant .After years of listening to the Boring American crap in the early 70s Punk came along and Boom the music scene came back to life. The jam came along a little later along with New Wave bands
John Peel once said of this song which used to turn up in his Festive 50 always near the top as I recall, that it was one of the best crafted songs he'd ever heard.
@@iandainton2416 He was a top bloke JP, no-one since has come near his ability produce a programme with such an eclectic choice of music without distancing his audience.
Great memories.... Now Check out Strangeways, Wills and Kate wedding tribute - on youtube Thefrankjohnsonmusic videos And ask if that spirit has died....Recommended!!!!
80s in the UK are much better in retrospect, loved The Jam as a tween but my memories of the 80s are of widespread unemployment, race riots, fear of nuclear war etc etc. There was a genuine reason that Weller was so angry.
