Wowww thank you for shining a completely new light on this precious song. I feel like the meaning of the lyrics are generally overlooked and you've done them real justice.
Interesting - reductionism on Abba. 💜 I love the attempt and doing this with songs in general. (Travis cover of Baby One More Time is one of the best covers ever made, imo. Reducing a great song to the absolute emotional essence of the song.) In this case it makes it obvious how strong Benny Andersson's genius is for turning very simple songs into hits by brilliant arrangements, harmonies, lovely secondary and ternary hooks, counterpoint small riffs that sprinkle gold over simplicity. Keeping only the vocal melody with added simple piano comp reduces this lovely song to almost nothing. It made me realize that almost all my emotions for this song are tied to the arrangement details... ============ The first two times I listened, I almost exclusively heard only all the details I was missing. However, it grows on you... I appreciate the deviations you made and the vocals in general!
I like your take on this and your experience of what this song by ABBA means to you. I felt the way Bain stripped back what was originally an upbeat, pop-rock disco song added back so much emotional depth and character to the lyrics. It’s also tucked nicely as the last track of her ITEIAD Sessions set list, juxtaposing against other songs of hers that are played more upbeat but with somber lyrics, and echoes her experience of love and loss. The beauty of Bain’s arrangement - to me, at least - was that she had made it her own.
I'll start by saying that I love sunshine baby and saw you in a dream is one of my all time favorite songs but I almost feel like you should be arrested for murdering this song. You slowed the tempo to a crawl and you did something I thought was literally impossible. You topk all of the fun out of an ABBA song and made if almost depressing
